    Bullshit.

That doesn't explain MK Komplete Edition, Batman Arkham City GOTY Edition or Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition

Those aren't exclusive, they're not timed exclusives and they still had roll-ups largely because they all followed the DLC cash-grab model. I can't blame exclusivity for that.

Uh, he was talking about exclusive titles, not multiplatform.

Stuff like Uncharted, Forza, Mario, God of War, Halo, Metroid, etc.

Though even console exclusives aren't immune to revisitation, it's just somewhat less likely.

        And he was wrong.

        - I buy/rent the game, only to discover that the later version is more complete/has more features etc. etc.

At least with definite exclusives you're left with a very straightforward decision with no future repercussions down the road.
He was talking third party exclusives and aside from Uncharted and and Gears (which is a third party exclusive)rollups are extremely rare in exclusives. I don't think anyone can feel screwed over about Metroid Prime Trilogy or GOW Collection given they came to totally different platforms. I don't think anyone was waiting it out last gen for those two.

Third party rollups are laughably common and aside from Epic Games - who does have an exclusivity deal for Gears of War - I can't think of one third party that has an exclusive with a complete/ultimate/GotY edition. I can think of several non exclusives that nickel and dime consumers, though.

Third party publishers act like the used market is a threat to them, but then they often go and give consumers a reason to NOT buy a game new on day one and either wait it out and get it used or wait for a "complete" edition. If you're a studio like Bethesda Game Studios, you can get away with a GOTY edition because its hard to argue with the level of content a game like Skyrim, Fallout 3 or Oblivion throws in your face - but then you have Arkham City GOTY which is just a slap in the face to anyone that bought it back in November. All the content that was rolled out weeks later that wasn't in the actual game is in the GOTY version. Its insulting. WB and Rocksteady put no work into the DLC, they just made plans in advance what they'd cut and sell separately. Now its out in a GOTY not seven months later.

Gamers are being conditioned to think this way with big third party releases. Third party exclusives to a particular platform are less and less common and as such, its just not likely for them to pull these kinds of stunts. It is extremely common for non-exclusive third party titles to pull this shit now.

1st/3rd doesn't matter so long as it's only on one platform period.

And there are exceptions to everything but generally, I like stuff like Valkyria Chronicles where I buy it the one time and that's it (barring things like remakes/remasters several years down the road).

I'm highlighting this bit mostly due to having a related note that might be a bit of a tangent.

Gamers in Europe have had to put up with this for years from japanese developers. it's bad enough that we often have to wait until up to a year after the US release to get a game (Atlus is notorious for this in Europe due to them farming out games to be published here but this is a completely different mess entirely. Let's just say it's at the point where Atlus fans find it less effort to just import the game and pay the ridiculous import taxes that the EU has), but the Japanese often get an improves version of the game we just got a month or two after.

FFVII, FFX, FFXII, Tales of Vesperia (though I'm surprised we even got a Tales of game released here), pretty much everything Capcom has ever made, pretty much every Kingdom Hearts game ever made, Persona 3, Soul Calibur 2, MGS 2, MGS 3, ZoE2, ICO, Takes of Symphonia and the BlazBlue series are all pretty good examples of Japanese developers giving a massive middle finger to Europe by giving them something to compensate for the huge wait and then giving the Japanese something better very soon after.
