Zero Mission and MPT did nothing wrong with formula or story as far as I can tell. I'm not beholden to holding the series back for the sake of it being in 2D, though, as its proven the series can be done just as well - if not better - in 3D.

I've seen people claim the series "needs" a 2D entry and while I'm not against it, I don't see a need to return to it. I only see a need to remove it from the senseless desire to be cinematic and story-driven. Metroid is not a mainstream series, it never will be a mainstream series so there's no need to pander to the mainstream gamer to change that.

Meh, I lump zero mission in with Fusion. It was in the same general time frame as I recall.

As for 3D, clearly it can and has worked for the series. I just don't enjoy it. I prefer my side-scrolling exploration. I want a metroid game that I can enjoy, and the series hasn't really provided me with that since Metroid Fusion.

The only thing that kind of killed me about Fusion and Zero Mission is that they went out of their way to ensure you couldn't sequence break - except for that one easter egg they deliberately put in, which doesn't really count. I can't remember the last time I beat Super Metroid "as intended."

As for the Primes I loved 1 but couldn't get into 2. Everything was either gray, brown or purple. Haven't played 3 yet.

Well, sequence breaking never was the intention of Metroid - it became the point for those interested in speed runs.

Those people are very, very few and they confuse the oversights of days gone by with intended design. If Super Metroid had been released today, it wouldn't have sequence breaks. Metroid only ever encouraged you to get below 2 hours and 30 mins and its possible sequence breaks or not. Sequence breakers want to beat that system.

Retro Studios quashed sequence breaks found in the US version of MP in the EU version then included the EU version as the standard version in MPT. Yet no one calls them on it.

If Sakamoto intended for sequence breaks I have a feeling Metroid games would be broken off the hinges from the get go. It certainly never been the primary interest of the core fanbase.

I know it wasn't, but it still added replay value to the game. None of the glitches really destabilized or ruined the game other than the Space-Time Beam glitch, and even that had a useful application - starting the game over with all items, essentially a New Game+.

There's only really one way for me to beat Metroid Fusion or Zero Mission. I have a couple of ways of beating Super Metroid, including trying to beat Ridley without the Gravity Suit or skipping the Grappling Beam altogether. It's what keeps me coming back to that game and not the newer ones.

I just don't see who benefits from it. People who like sequence breaking don't get it and people who just want to play through the game normally probably don't even know the exploits exist.
