  • Rumor: Metroid/Star Fox game... uh, wut?

    Starfox-Metroid Team-Up Rumoured For Wii U | Kotaku Australia

OK, so its rumored one of Retro Studios forthcoming games is a Star Fox/Metroid crossover.

Yeah. I don't know how that would work, either.

I have a lot of faith in Retro Studios ability to pull anything off, if anyone could make this work I'm sure it would be them but it still strikes me as one of those "Its totally true because my dad works at Nintendo" kinds of rumors. All the same, Its gaining stream and even IGN thinks its plausible because Pokemon Conquest and Smash Bros. are games that happened.

Thing is, crossover fighters were nothing new when Smash Bros and those don't have to be logical in gameplay to work. Pokemon Conquest works because Nobunaga's Ambition and Pokemon actually do have a far bit of common ground.

Set out to unify Japan > form alliances > build armies > manage resources > conquer enemy castles and strongholds
Set you to become a Pokemon trainer > befriend pokemon > build teams > manage inventory > defeat gym leaders

Star Fox is an on-rails shooter with branching paths, heavy on action, protecting wingmen and stopping an evil chimp from ruling the galaxy.
Metroid is a action platformer with a strong focus on exploration and puzzle solving, generally about stopping someone from using metroids to conquer the galaxy.

They might both take place within the Galactic Federation, in fact, I think both are commonly mentioned but then so is F-Zero and if you're going to throw a furry and his wingmen, why not make room for Captain Falcon and the gang, too? Captain Falcon and Honda are bounty hunters.

Now, the rumored subtitle of the game is "Fusion Saga," so if they're picking up where Fusion left off where we last saw Samus as a fugitive of the federation, I guess Star Fox could be brought in to track her down. I guess if they were going to close out the trilogy that includes Other M and Metroid Fusion, a game where Samus is a fugitive would need to be a little different.

Then again, I think Star Fox needs a good Star Fox game for once and Metroid just needs another good Metroid game (2D or Prime-style) to make people forget about Other M. I think putting them together doesn't exactly help both.

All in all I just hope its fake but the guy that the rumor originated from was right about Playstation All Stars Battle Royale.

oh be positive! It could be like Captain N cartoon but more epic cross over because its focused on Metroid and Star Fox!! And if Rare is making it that means it could be really like Star Fox Adventures but better!! Maybe it might include co-op or players can choose character and they can tag team and stuff (like Sonic Heroes but better). oh ya even neogaf seems interested: Paul Gale Network Rumour: Retro's New Game to be "Star Fox – Metroid: Fusion Saga" - Page 17 - NeoGAF It could spark a new series and also help boost Star Fox popularity!

Rare is owned by Microsoft and the Rare you're thinking of was on its way out well before Star Fox Adventures happened, Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day were the last Rare games to be made by anyone that made Rare special.

Some of those people moved on to Retro Studios, who seems to be developing this. Retro beat the odds on Metroid Prime and brought Donkey Kong Country back to glory, so if this is a thing, I'll give them a chance.

I think that's what Other M was, though it was a prequel to Fusion, which was Metroid 4. I think that' trilogy's closer was meant to be Metroid Dread. Whenever Sakamoto and Intelligent systems get around to it, anyway.

Its been eight years since the last proper 2D Metroid, so I think we're due for another.

Can Nintendo get away with releasing a 2D Metroid (with or without Fox McCloud)? I could see that maybe being a 3DS title... maybe. That's totally the wrong approach to take with the Wii U, IMO (though Nintendo's problems with marketing the Wii U are Sisyphean in scope at this time).

Making a Prime-like game makes a LOT more sense, especially if Fox McCloud is in the game (since Fox comes from a 3D game).

I've little doubt Nintendo is working on a Metroid game of some flavor for Wii U in any case.

At this point I don't give a rat's ass - it's been too damned long since Fusion came out.

people really need to stop hating on Other M, it was a good game, sue them for trying to give Samus feelings.... -.- I mean yeah it was a bit of a curve ball, but it was still a solid game. As far as a Fox/Samus game, I could see them doing some switching up, Platform events with Fox, and shooter space stages with Samus, or something like that.

Its not that they tried to give Samus feelings its that Sakamoto and the cinematic director at Team Ninja are hack writers when it comes to fully fleshed out drama. Sakamoto excels at 2D games in simplified storytelling, Team Ninja has never written a good story. The NES Ninja Gaiden Trilogy has more compelling stories than the modern trilogy.

Samus having the feelings she did wasn't inappropriate at all and those that think she did have an incredibly stupid concept of feminism deciding that. Samus is a character that has defied sexual stereotypes, but that doesn't mean she does not think of feel like a woman may. Being a strong female character does not mean you don't have personal weaknesses or just stow it like a man stupidly does.

Samus has plenty of reasons to have a PTSD moment with Ridley, but the timing and placement of it in Other M was bad and didn't make sense - they set no precedent for it. Samus has lost parental figures twice before Adam and they did nothing to communicate that, so she does come off as having "daddy issues" to an extent. I might have understood why. I know she lost her parents and KL2, the death of the Chozo as a race and some of the backstory from Fusion but Sakamoto only focused on Adam.

Worse is he totally just ignored an entire trilogy of events. He didn't even give MPT the time of day of an ounce of consideration. He just has some kludged together first person mode as a nod and it wasn't even implemented that well.

Team Ninja did what they could to keep it from being a total disaster because Sakamoto had no idea what he was doing. They had to talk him down from making it a rail shooter.

It was Metroid Lite to me. It had none of the depth of other entries in the series and it forgot the core fans in favor of attracting Japanese and younger western fans by throwing together a cinematic story on a franchise that excels at inferred narrative over spoonfed narrative. It was doomed from the start.

Come to think of it, Metroid could make a pretty cool MMO.

Make your bounty hunter (ala that DS game), run around exploring planets. Only problem would be all of the sharding involved in getting you to feel like you're only there with your friends, and not a billion other people.

Someone needs to mod the shit out of Left 4 Dead 2.

mmmm yeah I do agree with you there, thank god for Team Ninja on that part. I hope though in the next Metroid they take the few good things from Other M and add them to all the other good things from past games.

I just want to play Super Metroid again honestly. The series has been moving in a direction that I don't care to follow ever since Fusion, both mechanically and in terms of story.
