Re: It only does creative bankruptcy
The funny thing is I've heard people actually say "the cars from Gran Turismo and Wipeout."
So much of Sony's stuff is second party and while they are IPs Sony owns, they're not created by Sony and most them don't win points on personality and charm. This tends to be the difference when you have a corporation that makes games as one of its many things and you have a video game company that only knows video games that is run by developers and artists
Sony really doesn't have much of their own creation. Off the top of my head the true internal sony IPs are relatively few.
Twisted Metal
Wipeout
Ico/Shadow of the Colosssus
The Mark of Kri
Legend of Dragoon
God of War
Killzone (?)
And that's it, at least, all I can think of off the top of my head.
Now how many memorable characters out of that?
Sweettooth
Rau
Ico
Yorda
wander
Argo
A bunch of dragoons
Kratos.
Fox McCloud is the only character on the SSB roster not originally created by a Nintendo internal studio. Star Fox was created by Argonaut and Nintendo bought the rights to that. Nintendo went to Sega for Sonic in SSBB, but it was Hideo Kojima that came to Nintendo to get Solid Snake in SSBB (as to grant his son's wish, not that of the fans). Barring those things, most characters - except for again, Fox McCloud - find their origins on the 2D plane, even Solid Snake.
With these things in mind, the way SSB comes together feels a bit more organic. The idea of Sonic and Mario battling it out doesn't feel all that forced, fans want to see that sort of thing as they've been rival properties. There's also seems to be this ability to tap defining aspects of these characters to create interesting moments in SSB.
PASBR doesn't really feel organic, just forced. Characters here have even less common ground with over half of them being grounded in "realism" and most of them coming from a 3D space and not really being created by Sony, just acquired. So yeah its like Tycho said - they have the IPs, sure, but they don't really have the endearing personalities to pull it off. The fact that Sony has to play out so many royalties for "Sony" characters is enough to make whatever third party characters they include fairly limited.
Its made worse by the fact that two characters from one game Nintendo never revisited are infinitely more charming than most of Sony's:
And I question characters like Cloud Strife and Snake being licensed out, Nomura and Kojima will likely have a large say in that. Dissidia Final Fantasy is a strong brawler on its own and I'm sure SE is pretty proud of that. They'd probably rather just release an HD version of Dissidia than bother with Cloud clashing with characters he has nothing in common with.

I guess you have a point with PSABR characters not meshing together as well in 2D. It probably would've made more sense, character-wise, to make a Power Stone clone, since then you'd have the 3D movement that's inherent in practically every PlayStation franchise. When's the last time a Power Stone clone came out?

Re: It only does creative bankruptcy
There are quite a few Sony characters that are memorable but the problem is:
1) They are no longer First party (Pretty much all of the FFVI-IX cast)
2) Sony doesn't actually own the IP to them anymore (Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Rayman)
3) They are too obscure for people to remember (That kid from Ape Escape, that guy you play from Lair, the two girls from Heavenly Sword)
4) The game was technically never a Playstation exclusive (Just about every single game that got a PC port to start and countless others)
So who does that leave:
Ratchet and Clank (Sony probably don't own the IP)
Jak and Daxter (Sony probably don't own the IP)
Nathan Drake and the 1 dimensional female companion whose name I never care to remember (Sony probably don't own the IP)
Kratos
Hmm...Who else?
As fun as the game will probably be (I mean it's a brawler, it's hard to mess one up unless you intentionally set out to do it), it just makes you wonder who the hell even pitched this...Rahal Gerrant - Balmung - 188 DRK

Re: It only does creative bankruptcy
The last Power Stone was on Dreamcast. Capcom's letting that one rot.
Squaresoft never was a first party to Sony. Square just devoted resources to one platform and one only. They chose Playstation and it was actually EA that published FFVII. FFVIII and FFIX on the behalf of SCEA and kept thier logo out of the game by request.
Activision owns Spyro and Crash Bandicoot, they originated from Naughty Dog and Insomniac entered contracts with Sony. Insomniac is now with Activision, i think. Ubi Soft always has owned Rayman, but has been farmed out, developed and published by others when it came to platforms like Game Boy Color or smartphones.

Also where does the "It only does..." joke come from I see when people are bashing (rightly or wrongly) Sony? Is it from some NA advertising campaign?Rahal Gerrant - Balmung - 188 DRK
