  • It only does creative bankruptcy

    Footage: Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale
Audio: telling it like it is.
Developer: Superbot, who really wishes they worked for Nintendo.

Even I didnt think Sony could sink this low.

I totally look forward to playing That Guy from Resistance. And who can forget That Other Guy from Killzone!? Memorable pair, those two.

Maybe this time we'll see a Super Smash Brothers game where the online connections don't suck.

I wonder what the final boss will be:

      - Online Pass
      - DLC
      - Kevin Butler
      - $599
      - Firmware Update

I think that Parappa is the only character in that video that I actually recognise...

They can't cash in on the welded on Nostalgia Goggles of Nintendo fanboys and while the game probably will end up being fun (It's a Smash bros clone, it's hard to mess up something so simple) I doubt it will really outsel something like Brawl even with Nintendo having no idea as to how to run online multiplayer services.

Personally I'm waiting for Sony to announce the next Uncharted game so I can squee all over that while I wait for Squenix to release Tomb Raider.

Re: It only does creative bankruptcy

The problem is Sony literally only has a handful of stand-out, recognizable characters and there's really nothing here to set the game apart from Smash Bros.

When SE made a Final Fantasy Brawler, they made their own game and I have much more love for Dissidia than I ever did Smash Bros just because I enjoy out Dissidia goes about things. The Tales series also had a brawler that, unsurprisingly, plays not unlike a Tales game. Persona 4 Arena is going with ASW to make a proper 2D fighter with summons, which makes it fairly unique, even if it its otherwise a bit like BlazBlue, but that's ASW for you.

Kingdom Hearts chose to be an RPG, Pokemon Conquest a SRPG.

Sony could have done something completely original with this, but instead they decided to make a really bad looking Brawl mod.

Its one thing to be inspired by another series, but its something else entirely to rip-off something this recognizable and loved by gamers. Its gutless, really. And a stark contrast from the Company that brought us Rachet and Clank, Jak, Sly, Little Big Planet, Ico, SotC, Mark of Kri and many others. They might not be Nintendo-level recongnizable, but still.

In my head I envisioned an action adventure game where Kratos might show up in the world of Mark of Kri and become tooned up as a result and fights alongside Rai as they take on some boss together. Meanwhile Clank and Daxter have an adventure elsewhere. The Folklore and Legend of Dragoon characters meet up for an RPG level. All sorts of things they could have done but instead they make yet another brawler and they couldn't even make it their own brawler.

Well this is one time I would say Sony's version of brawl just doesn't have the appeal of SSBB characters selection and gameplay features, mew. I don't think Sony has anyone that rivals Sakurai's creativity and ambition, they even went as far as include Sonic and Snake in SSBB, how many developers can accomplish that?

I mean it's like EA characters trying to have the level of charisma that Konami characters have, mew. an EA brawl wouldn't be as appealing as a Konami brawl.

If they add Leisure Suit Larry as a playable character, I'll eat my shoe.

Given he's a PC game character, I don't see it happening.

Sakurai must be having a good laugh, he's just been given every reason to move Smash Bros. in a new direction. He was already reported to want to shake things up a little in the next SSB game.

You should be careful about making statements like that. Just ask Taskmage.

That's it. J9 has no love for the game. That means the game will be amazing.

To fend of any accusations of this being a Smash Bros. ripoff, Sony has said KOs are only possible by building meter to 100% to perform a special attack.

In other words, it's ripping off Dissidia, too.

Re: It only does creative bankruptcy

Finally got a chance to see the videos, now that I'm not working. At first glance, I was a bit taken aback at how similar the physics and movement are to Brawl. After looking more closely at it I noticed two things: I couldn't spot a single evasive maneuver (no shielding/blocking/rolling/air-dodging/teching as far as I could tell) and the levels seem a lot less invasive than Brawl's, at least at first glance. I suppose I should give them credit for that last one. More than half of Brawl's levels are just plain terrible and not-fun because of the myriad of ways someone can either camp, or the stage can randomly kill you.

Still. I don't think Nintendo deserves a monopoly on the genre any more than Capcom deserves a monopoly on traditional 2D fighters, but...damn Sony. This is pretty shameless.

EDIT: I'm also pretty confused as to what the hell they mean by charging a bar, because the traditional knock-out method seemed to be just as viable in this game.
