Re: It only does creative bankruptcy

Sakurai already stated earlier this month that he has some new ideas in store for SSB, particularly now that this is the fourth installment. He didn't say what the changes will be, but a game like this also gives him all the excuse he needed to change things up.

I don't really trust him with Smash Bros any more though. Brawl was a trainwreck gameplay-wise so if this next one is just as bad, I'm through with the series.

I guess it depends if he's really fresh enough after Kid Icarus. He was pretty damn good with that game, if a tad oblivious to the fact Nintendo made the Circle Pad Pro amidst his development cycle. As a result - people with big fat hands shouldn't play it. Everyone else is fine.

Re: It only does creative bankruptcy

It's not that I don't think he can make a good Smash Bros game. He's always been a good developer. But the decisions he took to water down Brawl were deliberate - he already came out and said that he probably won't make another game like Melee because it was too hard for beginners. If this line of thinking carries over into the next game, it doesn't really matter whether he's competent or not.

Back to the real topic of the thread...It's too early to pass judgement but I hope the devs know what they're doing. Thinking about the way KOs work in Smash Bros vs the way KOs work in Battle Royale there's a pretty critical difference. It doesn't matter how much punishment you take or how much punishment you dish out - your ability to win hinges solely on landing the super moves and avoiding the opponents'. If your super gauge resets after a KO then the system is also open to griefing - 3 players can target the remaining one with their supers over and over again and prevent him from ever charging up. The other problem could be that the supers are OP and any time you have one, someone's going to die. Seems to me your scoring shouldn't be based on your ability to land a specific move. EDIT: The super moves will also probably be balanced for a Free For All setup which may render some of them impossible to land in a 1vs1, unless you can combo into them.

Of course I haven't actually played it so who knows how that works out.

I agree, Brawl is a less competent game than Melee.

As for the roster, while Sony doesn't have the sort of focused roster that Nintendo (and SSB as a by-product) have, what they DO have is a huge, huge catalog of IPs. Plus they're already on the record stating that there will be 3rd party characters participating (Solid Snake-style), so I'm curious as to just how long this game has been in development, as a long development period could mean a very large (and varied) playable roster. Bearing in mind that the engine appears to be done, the controls are already polished, the time investment to add additional characters is "probably" much smaller - keeping them balanced probably takes longer than actually putting them in the game.

P.S. If this game gets a main-line Final Fantasy character from Square-Enix like Cloud Strife, it'll probably sell 1M+ on the strength of that alone. /wishIwasjoking

Did Ergheiz do well financially? Serious question. Although I suppose that game didn't have the same appeal as a crossover game does.

Re: It only does creative bankruptcy

The game has been in development for two years. I expect a DLC farce on par with MVC3 and SFXT with the way Sony's been lately. You know, what with their need for exclusives on SFXT fucking both versions of the game up pretty good. Bit of blame on Capcom in that as well, though.

I'd actually like to see fighters move away from massive rosters. It does nothing to benefit a game aside from give them more reasons to cut content to sell. They didn't have to spend so much time balancing or lying to you about what's DLC and what isn't.

P4 Arena has a pretty small roster and while there is DLC (this is ASW we're talking about) its mostly fanservice stuff like non-Persona SMT characters and probably some P1 or P2 characters thrown in. The kind that won't be on-disc because they're not dicks like that.

I don't really mind a massive roster as long as there's a good 8-10 viable characters that are balanced amongst themselves.

@Ketaru: I've seen Jump Ultimate Stars but never really bought it. I didn't really like the gameplay and I've barely watched any of the animes or read the mangas of the characters involved so there was little fanservice there to work in its favor in winning me over.
Fair enough about the gameplay. There are so many times where it feels incredibly unbalanced. It shows in how, on random online matches, you see people always using the same characters. And it was no fun unless you actually knew others that played the game. If you tried to do the online matches, you end up playing with 3 other people who want to stand their and do nothing and collect the reward for being in 1st place (which would be a 4-way 1st place tie if nobody does anything). The moment you perform an action to try and- you know- play, everybody gangs up on you, then dances over your corpse until the timer runs out.

I don't really care for Brawlish games. But seeing Sony trolling BBQ like that is worth the admission ticket.

I can't speak from experience but it seemed kind of...one-dimensional. The characters are damned tiny but move really fast, and your camera is really limited. Because of that only attacks with big hit boxes (or projectiles) seem to work effectively. From what I've seen the game kind of boils down to attacking in the general direction of your opponent and trying to cast as big a metaphorical net as you can with your attack (e.g. Luffy's flurry of punches.)

Of course a lot of those problems are a direct result of the DS having a really low resolution. It doesn't even have enough vertical lines for an SNES game.

$3.99 is actually pretty cheap for DLC compared to what we pay in the UK for the same thing. Usually we will get charged £3.99 for $3.99 DLC which is closer to $6.40.

They'd probably do online pass + season pass for something like this.

                                --------------

Anyway, I wrote a whole blog on the matter

Destructoid - The Silent Protagonist's Community Blog

I can TL;DR it for you:

Playstation All-Stars is like a boy wearing his father's clothes. Sure, it might be fun to wear dad's business suit and stomping around in his shoes, but they still don't fit him. Sony's ideals have always been vastly different from Nintendo's and this game seems more interested in stomping around daddy's suit and shoes than show us how he's grown. If you wanna throw a party, fine, but make it your party.
