Re: NEPTUNE V (Victory) the next ultimate RPG!! Getting better and better!!

Reading this thread is like watching a sitcom.

Excitable person (EP) walks into the room with an ad for a new toy. Everyone else looks up, sighs, and waits for the inevitable.

EP: Look everyone! A NEW toy! It's great because it's new, and because it's new it's the best new thing ever because it's NEW!

Jaded Person (JP): It sucks. That toymaker is a cancer and will cause the downfall of the entire toy industry.

EP: Wahhh, you're totally wrong. [points at the ad] It's going to be the best ever, even better than the series 1 and series 2! No one else makes anything like this!

Witty Person (WP): That's because no one else tries as hard to cash in on schmucks. [canned audience laughter]

EP: You're all mean and being totally unfair. This toy is going to be the best in the history of history, you'll see!

              ---

Moral of the story: Neptunia is a series that rides its one joke into the ground and doesn't have anything else to recommend it.

I'd say the game being released was worth it just so I had the chance to read this topic.

I see why some dont like the Neptune games, but I happen to love them, yeah the story is weak and it is overly Japanese...... but I like the "Console War" theme.

Just take out Duke and replace him with Neptunia

RPG is a category in the gaming industry and it refers specifically to games that are similar in nature to the pen-and-paper games of yore. They distilled this down into specific categories, including Strategy RPG, Action RPG and Competitive RPG, and then preserving the name RPG to mean something that is entirely different from the aforementioned categories. Generally speaking, if there is a mathematical calculation involved in determining how your character performs in a given situation, based on your character's current development, then it is most likely an RPG system. Because there is no possible way to "role play" your character in an electronic game (leaving out MMORPG from this discussion) in such a way as to deviate, manipulate and create outside of the developer restriction, this has been a "loose" tenet that most programmers and developers adhere to.

So, under this angle, Zelda most likely does not qualify as an RPG. It is strictly in the veins of a 3rd person shooter, where you collect powerups, different weapons, but overall do not directly have control over your character development per se. There are no stat points, no customization of gear, etc. where a lot of mathematics would be needed to crunch the results of a combat interaction. You either kill or be killed; there's no nuanced distinction in that activity. As such, it is placed under the category of "Action/Adventure" here in the West.

Just because a game has a story, doesn't necessarily place them into the category of RPG. Leisure Suit Larry had a story, albeit a flimsy one at that, and no one I ever met has called it an RPG. It also has choices, something which OMG above stated as a tenet of an RPG, which I will argue that having choices does not automatically make it an RPG game. I have choices in Gran Turismo regarding the customization of my vehicle, but that doesn't make it an RPG.

We could be arguing till we're all blue in the face but I trust the current categorizing of the games by the game industry and will fall back to their nuanced opinions any day over people who are just passionate about their hobby but do not actually develop or create those games themselves.

                        no customization of gear

where a lot of mathematics would be needed to crunch the results of a combat interaction.
Shield depicted above is twice as durable (x2) than the original you collected parts to upgrade from. Its still vulnerable to fire, but not conductive like metal so you are not shocked by electric attacks. Stat modifiers don't have to be visible to be stats.

You either kill or be killed; there's no nuanced distinction in that activity.
Yeah, no offense, defense, knocking enemies off balance, or evading is a factor here. And that's before factoring in front and rear assaults and using other tools in a fight to steal items, stun enemies, stealth is never a factor (totally never) nor is tossing out bait as a distraction so you can avoid fights.

They just stab at each other, right?

Also, I will point to the word GATEWAY one more time to see if you've been paying attention. Weed is a gateway drug, Zelda is a gateway to RPGs.

I in no way said "Zelda is an RPG" but I have shown you how it might lead to people to people developing an interest in them or just thinking Zelda is one. They are not wrong for thinking this, as Zelda quite honestly does have a lot of the elements of an RPG in it.

And yet you're awful quick to take offense and white knight the game whenever someone says "Zelda is not an RPG".

I can think of maybe one time where this forum even debated it before. "Whenever" doesn't happen much. I'm just saying I can see why people might think its an RPG. The elements are there.

I'm not one to act like RPG party has been crashed when that happen. I just get snippy when some weeaboo or Biodrone stills in and proclaims RPGs are "about story" when they actually don't have to be at all.

This got me thinking, what are Nintendo fans called in english? Nintenbros, Nintendrone?

In Mexico we call them Nientiendos, which is a word play between Nintendo and No Entiendo (I don't understand) due to their usual lack of understanding of anything related to modern HD gaming since they think in terms of older consoles (they seem to be still stuck in the SNES/Gameboy era really) and think the Wii is a technological marvel.

Which... it kinda is if you are using a SDTV. XD

They also tend to purchase the Club Nintendo magazine religiously. Which I didn't even know still existed until like six months ago.

I'd put Zelda in the Adventure/Platformer category before thinking of it as an RPG.
