Persona 3 FES Coming to PlayStation Network - PlayStation 3 News at IGN

Its coming to PSN April 10th.

Given PS2 Classics are pretty terrible as emulation goes, however, you'd be getting a better deal out of the digital version of PSN for PSP which just got marked down to $20. Better gameplay, more features and not entirely raped of its dignity.

FES might be the "director's cut" but the second P3P got all the refinements of P4, it became the better version of the game.

But if you like AI-controlled allies that waste MP on healing themselves when enemies are immune to their skills when you might need it, FES might be the version for you.

I know a few people who don't have PSPs so they will be pretty happy to hear this. Even though P3P is the best version of the game, I still got a lot of enjoyment out of FES.

It was fun, but after P4 and P3P, its just incredibly hard to go back to that version with all its flaws, especially when Sony does nothing to clean these games up for HDTVs, you're honestly just better off playing a great deal of these games on PS2 due to their ineptitude.

        Ahhh the AI controlled allies...

        Minato: Mitsuru! I'm dying!
Mitsuru: Oh okay I'll just cast MARIN KARIN!
        Minato:

Chie in P4 was actually worse given that she would use her useless low level Bufu spells instead of her ridiculously powerful physical skills if set to AI controlled.

It did actually turn Akihiko into a game breaker though since while his AI debuffed well, controlling when and where those debuffs land yourself was just insane given how vital buffs and debuffs are in SMT games. Same with Mitsuru too since she was pretty much the perfect Red mage stat and skill wise.

With the buff/debuff thing. For anyone who doesn't know what I'm on about, play Nocturne (Lucifer's Call for any European players reading this) and try to fight Matador without using them. You died horribally didn't you? Now try fighting him with them. THAT is how important they are.

What's funny is that the old 60GB PS3s display PS2 games perfectly fine on a HDTV in 720p. I still regularly play PS2 games upscaled DVDs on my 60GB PS3 without any display problems whatsoever. I get display problems when playing in 1080 on some older PS3 games but there isn't even an option to upscale DVD and PS2 games past 720 anyway.

What Sony are doing is basically setting it so the game displays in 1080p without actually upscaling it properly so the result is just a mess. It's a bit depressing when there's emulators out there on the internet that are so much better than Sony's own emulator used for those PS2 classics. They *should* display properly on the Vita though. I'm going to have to ask an IRL friend about that though since he grabbed one at launch so knows more about what the console can do than I do.

It is a bit sad how there's still a lot of console games that can't even display in resolutions higher than 1080 though when the PC has been able to do that for at least 15 years. I'm not anti-console by any means, far from it, but it does really show just how backwards the technology curve of consoles actually is. I do get the feeling that sometimes the big three console makers mistake gimmicks and one upping the competition as the same thing as innovation and progress.

Re: Persona 3 FES coming to PSN as a PS2 Classic

I had procured another PS2 of late, but it is hard to look at on my HDTV and I have doubts that switching to component would even make it as tolerable as the Wii tries to be.

So out of curiosity, I've read up on HD upscaling devices (Some seem Wii compatible as well) first and emulation second and "just hack the Xbox 360" as a last resort. I doubt my Laptop is up to it as it overheats easily, though.

XPSX2 (I think it's called that) is a pretty good PS2 software emulator, it's not the best one out there but the features are good and it's comptable with a wide variety of pads including XBox 360 and PS3 pads.

As for just hacking the console I'll say this: it's best to err o nthe side of caution. A lot of custom firmware for consoles works perfectly fine but there is always a very tiny chance of something going wrong and the thing getting bricked. Thankfully for the 360, custom firmware is infinitely less likely to brick the effing machine than Microsoft's own compulsory firmware updates. I wouldn't bother hacking the PS3 though. Sony go to extreme lengths to fuck over people who try.

Still, hacking consoles technically doesn't void the warranty (at least in the UK) unless you were stupid enough to take out an extended warranty (In which case you're an idiot because you're agreeing to the store's terms and conditions for a refund after a year has passed). The Sale of Goods Act 1979 always entitles you to a full refund for a faulty product in the UK if it's returned within a year (after a year though stores are under no legal obligation to do so even with an extended warranty) and nine times out of ten it IS a faulty console that is to blame for brickings.

I'm not sure how the law works for that in the US but I guess different laws are why the hacking of electronics for the purposes of additional features is more widespread and not instantly associated with piracy in the EU.
