  • Etrian Odyssey IV: The Legedary Giant... and more FOE!

Its back to murder cute anime types and crush the spirits of even those brave enough to beat Dark Souls.

Etrian Odyssey IV will be a 3DS game -Destructoid

    Prepare to die. Again.

Or maybe less often. There will be a lower difficulty, but those wanting a auto-map feature? Nope, fuck you, you're still drawing them out. This is Etrian Odyssey, it's never going to give that up!

I've only played one of these games and it was the most painful experience ever.
It felt like there was no story regardless of the npc script.
I can't imagine the sequels being any better.
The most enjoyable part for me was drawing the map.
    everything else was .... meh

EO doesn't have a story because its trying to be a throwback to the earliest days of PC RPGs. As with table top RPGs, we kind of made up the stories to such games based on the experiences we had. The maps are there because they're a throwback to the fact people used to use graph paper to chart out MUDs and vector dungeons since there were no maps in games back at the time.

Its for people that want that experience back, its not for the people brought up on FFVII or KOTOR, really.

I'm all for the old style of rpg's myself pushing towards 30 I grew up with them.
I have some experience with tabletop gaming, Mainly the warhammer games and each of those I played there was so much in detail and backstory it was easy to get lost in such make believe worlds.

EO just felt empty to me, wandering around doing stuff mainly because "you can" didn't really cut it for me. I like to know the who, what, where and why. I was mainly bugged by the ammount of time you invest into it and get nothing in return.

It's like Skyrim, most of my game time has literally been me running from one part of Skyrim to the other. And I loved every single minute of it.

So I doubt that it's going to let it down either, then.

Etrian Odyssey IV Has Special Quests Hidden In QR Codes | Siliconera

Interesting article regarding the game. It would be awesome of this led to some small quests players could create on their own and share. Gwe'll have to wait and see where Atlus goes with it, but that would be a nice and appropriate addition to a series like this.

I hasn't been keeping up with the JP site, but as turns out the EOIV will be going the way of SMG and Zelda:SS, in this case giving up the usual DS MIDI and FM Synthesis leanings for a live orchestra.

This would be something to be sad about, but then, Yuzo Koshiro has always done an amazing job on the compositions for this series and they translate incredibly well to a live orchestra.

                    Nintendo Direct's trailer

Fear the mustached baboon. FOEs are no longer mysterious orange blobs on the field, now you can dread them for what they really are. They're the only encounters you can still see on the field, though. The rest are still random encounters, it seems.

                      Confirmed for early 2013!

Of course, I still need to finish the first three games, so there's that. They're on my shelf.

Now if Atlus would kindly tell us about Soul Hackers for 3DS and Persona 2 Eternal Punishment for PSP that would be lovely.

Its now dated for Feb. 26th, 2013 in the US.

Other details dropping today are that there will be an artbook and CD as well. There's a couple special points of interest in these fairly standard inclusions, though. For one, the art book will also feature a piece of Etrian Odyssey art by Alexandra Douglass. The CD will be a series of out-takes composed by Yuzo Koshiro that did not make the game's final cut, so that's a unique bonus.

It will also launch on eShop digitally that same day, so there might be a glimmer of hope in Europe getting it more quickly, if only digitally and NOE not fucking this up.
