Nintendo Direct Conference Set for Tomorrow - Wii News at IGN

Reggie just sent everyone a Swapnote messages about a Nintendo Direct press conference tomorrow at 9am EST. Its interesting because tomorrow PS Vita launches and they decide to have an announcement just an hour before stores open and start selling i (well, except for Wal-Mart).

The timing just reeks of having something to do with the 3DS. It couldn't be about anything else, though I could hope for an announcement of The Last Story, but given that doesn't launch in EU territories til Friday, I don't think that's it.

I don't know where this guy gets off sending me swapnotes, he's not on my friends list.

          Re: OK, this is fishy.

I have a feeling this more likely pertains to touting sales numbers and making significant, previously unknown game announcements, probably highlighting some Q2 releases as well. 3DS has passed 5 million units in Japan faster than DS and GBA did and its pounding Vita in Japan, which after selling 500k has plummeted to the bottom of the charts and only outsells 360s now, but even PS2 are selling better than it is.

People were naysaying 3DS this time last year, that the time of handhelds was over and that people only wanted mobile games now. They were wrong.

I don't think anyone (with any credibility) was saying they were done as much as pointing out the reality that Nintendo's lost 1/3 of their marketshare and it's not coming back, ever. Tablets are here to stay and they're just going to have to deal with that.

The 3DS had a pretty shitty line-up to go along with that price tag for some time as well - it's only recently spiked since the price drop, which also caused Nintendo's stock to drop for the first time in ages. That said, I saw on joystiq that it's sold 5 million units in Japan alone so far so things are going rather smoothly now. The ball's definitely back in Sony's court to deliver the goods or trail a distant 2nd place once again. Unfortunately they're likely to trail given their track record and that while the Vita is cool, the consensus seems to be that people don't necessarily want a console experience on a handheld - that's why we have consoles. Nevermind their exclusivity deal with AT&T (who the fuck thought that was a good idea?) for the 3G.

Anyhoo, I'm curious to see what bs Reggie is going to pull out from his ass tomorrow. (I'm not hating on Nintendo - Just Reggie. I can't stand the guy)

Sony's a distant 3rd because they don't make things as convenient as Nintendo and Apple do. That is, if you consider mobile and handheld gaming the same thing, which I don't. Still Apple is way ahead of Sony and they're not really even bringing any heavy hitters - just convenience, a concept Sony seems to hate.

What I'm really hoping to see in this showing tomorrow is what Nintendo has in the works for eShop because Pushmo and Sakura Samurai have been fantastic. They kind of remind me of the stuff Nintendo put out in arcades pre-NES, actually.

                        Re: OK, this is fishy.

More info is rolling out now that additional videos are online and then there's also the news from the Japan reveals, of which this is interesting

Capcom, Sega, Namco-Bandai teaming up for 3DS game -Destructoid

There's a picture of a safe with the numbers 032760 on it. Don't know if that has any significance or not.

I just looked the the videos for Dillon's Rolling Western. The concept seems to be themed around tower defense, but with action based combat from a armadillo protagonist. Its like if Sonic and Bonk had a baby, really. Her rolls around (duh) really fast, smashes into enemies and slashes them with his claws. He can even burrow and strike from below. He also has to collect resources to help his town be both protected from the enemy Grocks and otherwise keepin' things all prosperous-like.

I'll probably get it sometime in the next week, but its looking like another solid downloadable game from Nintendo. Gonna stay focused on MGS, Resident Evil and Sakura Samurai for now, though.

Some additional info from the EU and JP direct conferences (Japan's was 45 mins and rather detailed):

                            - Fire Emblem will launch in March for Japan, but the first DLC pack will be made available on April 19th and be free for all people who have a copy through May 31st.
                            - DLC will feature guest characters from other FE games
                            - Cel shaded cutscenes for big events, lots of voice acting for Fire Emblem
                            - Fire Emblem will be coming to Europe, so I guess if Americans beg enough we'll get it, too.
                            - Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition is indeed a tactics RPG, takes place in the Ranse region and you can capture and collect pokemon to add to your ranks.
                            - Miis can be used in Mario Tennis Open and have unlockable outfits
                            - A new Culdecept game was shown for 3DS
                            - Six classes in Kid Icarus Uprising multiplayer, each with a unique role, three on each team.
                            - A soccer sim was shown (those never make it out to America or Europe)
                            - AR features from KH DDD were shown off
                            - Rune Factory 4 animated trailer shown, EU release is yet to be confirmed
                            - eShop game; Denpa Ningen RPG shown off. AR characters called Denpa Ningen are captured from real world AR to be used in the RPG
                            - Game Gear games to debut soon in Japan (ESRB already outed a few for the US, so it won't be long here)
                            - Sega/Capcom/Bamco game teased Namdai will be publishing, oddly Banpresto also has its name dropped in there.
                            - Etrian Odyssey IV trailer shown, ocean exploration has been exchanged for exploring the skies via airship
                            - New Brain Training games
