  • Got $40, need a game. Got any recommendations?

So normally I have little spending cash, but I've come into some cash thanks to a nice grandmother and some house sitting. I have not bought a new game since Dissidia 012 and I am really getting bored replaying things. So any recommendations?

I have a PSP, DS and Wii

    Current games
FF4, TWEWY, 358/2 Days, Chrono Trigger, FFTA 2, Star Ocean 1 and 2, BBS, Crisis Core, ToTW: Radiant Mythology, Dissidia 012, Galaxy 1 and 2, Corruption, Twilight Princess, and probably a few others I am forgetting.

I'd prefer a PSP or DS game at the moment because I am still on vacation and my Wii is in Virginia.

    I r dissapoint.

So Persona 2 IS (PSP) I guess...

If I had PS3 or 360 I'd get skyrim, but the Grad school budget debt free version makes that a bit hard.

You don't have Skyward Sword yet?

Concerning the DS . . . FFIII? Kirby Super Star Ultra? Perhaps one of the Disgaea remakes, if you have a good set of headphones . . .

For the Wii: Rune Factory Frontier if you're a fan of Harvest Moon, or it's new sequel Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny (which I haven't played yet). Animal Crossing: City Folk, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Monster Hunter Tri.

Ah, definitely Okami if you haven't played the PS2 version.

For PSP: Silent Hill: Origins, Persona 3 Portable, MGS: Peace Walker,

For DS: Don't own so not going to bother recommending or else I'll be here typing a wishlist all day.

DS: Radiant Historia - Feels like an SNES classic, probably hard to find right now though.

Aliens: Infestation is also incredibly good, looks Metroidy at first, but its actually quite faithful to the movies.

Monster Tale is good - more or less Pokemon Meets Metroid + Megaman

Wii; Muramasa: The Demon Blade - great and gorgeous 2D sidescroller

And Skyward Sword, that's a must.

I'd list more but I have to go.

I'd say skip Twilight Princess and buy Skyward Sword. It's a better game than all previous console Zelda games, and Twilight Princess had bad motion controls (unless you have the GameCube version.) Also, Humble Bundle 4 if you haven't bought that already. Especially Cave Story+. I haven't played it myself, but I have also heard great things about Radiant Historia. The trailer sold me on it, at least.

Just to add there's a DSiware version of Cave Story as well as a wii version. Wii and Steam versions have a bit more detail, but the DsiWare as 3DS version have the advantage of being portable.

$40 for PSP, DS, or Wii? Hmm.

                  Inexpensive picks:

                  PSP:

Jeanne d'Arc: Severely underrated PSP game that flew under everyone's radar. Resembles Final Fantasy Tactics in terms of gameplay, but with some very neat twists of its own. Should be very inexpensive in the ~$10 range or so, give or take a few bucks.

                  Wii:

I second the recommendation for Okami. Should be inexpensive, and is a very faithful port of the PS2 version if you've not played it. Shouldn't cost you more than $25, can probably get it for less than that if you bargain hunt.

                  DS:

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is a good buy IF you can get it for a reasonable price (reasonable to me for this title would be in the $20 range).

Personally I enjoyed TP more. I honestly found the motion plus controls more aggravating because of the constant need for recalibration, and TP's darker theme (the visuals were better as well). Some of SS's dungeons were amazing, but overall I hated how they basically recycled the same areas 3 times over like wtf.

Not sure what you can get for $40... today's Boxing Day in Canada and there were some ridiculous deals, like Assassin's Creed Revelations for only $19.99 at EB/Gamestop. I snagged BF3 Limited Edition for PC for only $39.99 which was just stellar. Batman Arkham Asylum is also on for $39.99 at multiple stores and MW3 was only $49.99 instead of $59.99 (my bro's X-mas gift otherwise I wouldn't even glance at it - though I do love Spec Ops mode)

You really can't go wrong with Persona 3 Portable. Even if you do have P3 and/or P3FES, P3P doe shave enough new content to justify purchasing it again as the female protagonist's game is actually quite different than the male's. It was very expensive for me to import this but I regret nothing despite alreadying owning P3 and P3FES.

Radiant Historia on the DS is good too. Was a pain in the arse for me to import this but was worth it.

Recalibrating is easy. You can't fix TP's bad motion controls, and SS has better gameplay and much better bosses from what I've seen so far (about 5 dungeons in.)
Some of SS's dungeons were amazing, but overall I hated how they basically recycled the same areas 3 times over like wtf.
That's a good thing. TP had such a big overworld that exploration was impractical, because you were always teleporting and riding Epona. A smaller world with more hidden paths makes for better exploration and is more in line with what Zelda's all about.

The problem with TP is that it had no moment of exploration in the overworld that didn't feel extremely forced. Take the tears of light element of both games as a perfect way of displaying this fact.

In SS it was used in such a way that it challenged your knowledge of a previously explored area. Additionally there were rare crafting materials to tempt you.

In TP it was was just forcing you to travel across certain areas in which you gain no valuable information about those areas. Zelda is generally good about putting the "this might be useful info later" ideas in your head. That was not the result of this. This was just padding

Not to mention the visual style in Skyward Sword was much, much, much better (minus the few graphical glitches).

Re: Got $40, need a game. Got any recommendations?

I thought looked a bit cartoony in all honesty - like a blend of TP and WW that just didn't pan out right. Zelda for one, looks hideous. At least with WW, it looked like that on purpose and everything fitted together.

I still liked TP better though. The bosses felt uninspired to me in SS, as did some of the dungeons. I have to say though, the "Stealth" part of the game was pretty cool and one of my favorite parts of the game. But more often than not I just found the controls really made things irritating, especially the bombs...

Normally I take some of the complains they voice on Invisible Walls with a grain of salt but they hit the nail on the head with this game. Looks fantastic in some parts, complete ass in others, and the Motion Plus while great only seems to work about 80% of the time - and that 20% it doesn't, tends to get you killed. Like when I move my arm in a horizontal motion and link instead slashes diagonally, or even from the wrong side (not even sure how the hell THAT happens).

I loved the game, I just don't think it's as good as people are making it out to be - I'd rate it 4th on the list behind LTTP, OoT and TP in that order. The shield mechanics were the best so far in SS however (minus the durability nonsense - did we really need that in a Zelda game? Why just the shields?) with how responsive the blocking was. Though again, it's pretty damn stupid that an enemy striking your shield while you're idle lowers durability, but if you swing it forward to actively block an attack, it's basically a free block.

Explain this to me please. From a balance perspective sure, it's rewarding the player for actively blocking an attack as opposed to just standing there hiding behind their shield (which is kinda the point of the damn thing but anyway) but from a technical standpoint, wouldn't that actually cause more damage from the force of your thrust in addition to the enemy's attack?

Whatever. Given everything that Shigeru's created, I won't even attempt to question his reasoning/logic because it's all one drugged crazed hallucination in that mind of his I'm sure lol. There's no way anyone came up with all that shit sober.
