    Re: Black Rock Shooter????

I am disappointed. The first three minutes of the video couldn't even capture my interest. I loved the OVA of BRS enough to cosplay from it, but this game just looks terrible. Japan could have done so much better. Or maybe I just have high standards. This game is a great example of wasted potential.

It has pretty deep enough battle system for a rpg shooter! I think there might be difficulty settings too.

I lol'd big time at the "Push the O button!" part.

Are you really complaining because they are not targeting an anime game they want to make -that you deem terrible- for people outside Japan? Shouldn't you be happy you wont get it here?

Or... is it your pride saying that everything needs to cater western tastes or something?
He's saying that anyone making a niche game like this is shooting themselves in the foot. I.e. They could be making much more money by selling something that appeals to more than just weeaboos and some Japanese gamers.

This may come as quite a shock to you but it's possible to have bad taste in games.

No, he's referring to the death spiral that the Japanese game development industry is undergoing at the moment. As I mentioned previously, the rest of the world is growing increasingly intolerant of the peculiarities of Japanese games. We've come a long way since Super Mario Brothers and turn-based RPGs, but a lot of Japanese game developers cling stubbornly to a lot of outmoded game mechanics because a significant but shrinking portion of the Japanese game buying public lets them get away with it.

Everywhere else in the world, developers are constantly experimenting with new gameplay, and the result is progress. From turn-based RPGs, we now have Western RPGs that tend to be more real-time, with more coherent storylines. That doesn't mean they're necessarily better than the traditional JRPG, but they certainly sell better as a whole.

For companies like Gust, Nippon Ichi, and a whole stable of other Japanese studios, they're clinging like leeches to the (shrinking) part of the Japanese market which hates change and just wants Dragon Quest MCCCXV, but the rest of the world has largely moved on - which is why they're all struggling now, because frankly the Japanese market alone is not enough to sustain these companies, and it almost seems like they don't care, and have no idea what to do about the situation.

Yeah that is true, but there was no need for the diss you threw out there to make this game look better. It offended me and yes it's the internet, but seriously if they were to remake FF 7 now it'd be game of the year hands down in my opinion. Also if you want an action game, why don't you try looking at Gods Eater and Gods Eater Burst.

I think to be called Game of the Year, you need to innovate. FF7 was innovative for its time, but games have evolved greatly since then. An FF7 remake will only be GotY if it's different from the original and not just a much prettier version of it - but at that point it stopped being FF7 as you're thinking of it.

They are just making the games they want to make. And right now the PSP/PS2 are the cheapest and safest ways to do it. Just take a look at all those obscure titles no one ever hears about (even in Japan) but that are developed simply because they want to make the game. Heck, there are even legends of Salary men who fund these games and get pretty much nothing back but their game being developed.

It's probably more of a cultural thing than a business model, and as such not released outside Japan.

It may not make sense to you, but it doesn't have to either.
