  • Metal Gear Rising: Revengence

This was probably the only worthwhile trailer to come out of the VGAs last night. Turns out Kojima Productions is producing and Platinum Games is now the developer of Metal Gear Rising with new silly subtitle "Revengence."

Seems the premise of the game is still intact, except its waaaaaay more over the top, considering Raiden just threw a Ray in the air and went all Advent Children Cloud Vs. Bahamut on it.

I don't know how I feel about Metal Gear being taken to Final Fantasy craziness - even that tunnel fight versus the featured rival was felt culled from FFVII:AC, but since its Platinum + Kojima I'm still willing to give it a fair shake. Word is there's still the option for non-lethal kills on human enemies, though the trailer doesn't give that aspect any screentime.

Some people have reservations about the stealth element of MGS seeming absent, but to be honest, I wasn't really expecting that to be part of this spin-off anyway.

Rising? Revenge? Revengeance? Rise the Ripper? Oh mew I think I'm dizzy. Immense trailer, mew!

Yeah, dizzyness aside it has the potential to be a great game... or a great failure.

I do like the Advent Children fights -one of the main reasons I liked Dissidia was the AC-ish combat system- although I'm not sure how I feel about seeing it in a Metal Gear game. But then again Cyborgs have always been over the top in the Metal Gear universe. Remember back in MGS when Gray Fox killed all those guys in the corridor?

      I think he was playing this game at the time. <_<;

PS > If the combat is awesome but the game sucks the worse thing that could happen is that SE woke up one day and stole the gameplay for a FFVII remake.

        Re: Metal Gear Rising: Revengence

This is supposed to be the game between MGS2 and 4, so its the story where Raiden goes cyborg. I guess I do remember Grey Fox being able to push Rex back, though he did get squished by Rex eventually.

I guess people complaining also forget that Raiden's action scenes were also extremely over the top in MGS4. That and he took down an army of Ray's by the end of MGS2. So this probably isn't too farfetched, its just the presentation that makes it seem that way, though this also seems to be a version of the MGS4 engine.

oh mew, expecting it to play like MGS doesn't make sense mew since they chose Platinum Games, which are the best at stylish action games.

And FFVIIAC is unfair comparison since DMC and Ninja Gaiden had been representing over the top stylish combat long before FFVII AC came along, and even FFVIIAC combat is levels below things you see in DMC3 and Bayonetta.

MGRising looks to be a mew mew action game with MGS story background. It's a spinoff, so that should calm down fans and accept it as its own standalone action game!

I heard this actually takes place after MGS4 in a different dimension, mew. It also explains why the Solid isn't in the title. So no harm done to the series since this will really be a different fun kind of Metal Gear.

I mean look at Mario Party and Kart, it's a Mario game but plays nothing like the main series.

The gameplay looks more like Bayonetta than MGS4, to be quite honest. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but a stealth game this most certainly is not from what this trailer reveals. Also, what the hell is with blocking a 50 ton appendage with a sword that weighs maybe a handful of pounds?

I also don't think it's the best trailer to come out of the VGAs this year; for me, that honor goes to the Transformers: Fall of Cybertron trailer.

              Re: Metal Gear Rising: Revengence

That trailer reminds me of a childhood frachies that should have stayed in my childhood so it couldn't be defiled by Micheal Bay. Its pretty but the Transformers games have never risen above average experiences. It's better than Bioware's announcement, tbough, I'll give it that. I mean, seriously, Command and Conquer 2 Generals?

Kojima clarified a few things about Revengence just recently:

"The old Rising that was being prototyped at Kojima Productions looked visually like Metal Gear, but it was 30 frames per second and required complicated controls," he revealed. However, when the studio was unable to focus the game's direction, it was unceremoniously canceled. That's when Platinum Games stepped in, expressing interest in the project and asking to get involved.

"I made one request of Platinum: a cool Raiden who moves nice and smooth at 60 frames per second," he said.

As for the game's place in the Metal Gear Solid series, it doesn't have one, despite being set in the same universe: "We've only said that the period setting is several years after MGS4. Metal Gear Rising is not part of the Metal Gear Solid series. At present, we can't say more than this."
So more or less Platinum saved a cancelled game and are going in quite a different direction in a largely undefined part of the MG timeline so they can get away with it. Works for me, but I guess this sort of cuts off any hope of it being relevant to MGS as a whole. I still think it would be for the best if Konami would let MGS end, though.

                bad, omgwtfbbq!! BAAAAD!

That is wasteful thinking preferring that series to just discontinue just because it doesn't follow the story/gameplay you want it to expand on, mew.

Anyways MGS era pretty much closed with MGS4. Metal Gear could still exist in other forms, mew. and if they make MGS5, people that prefer MGS might like that, while the MGRising fans might want a new side series like the one Platinum is making, mew!

Metal Gear Rising can reach out to fans that don't mind change, as well as bring in new fans that weren't interested in the franchise before.

                  Re: Metal Gear Rising: Revengence

For me Metal Gear ended with Snake, so unless he meets Ra's al Ghul and becomes young again I think MGS is pretty much over. Maybe a cinematic or CG movie could bring some more closure, maybe. But it's not like it would change anything either way.

So, I think I'm ready for the next Kojima franchise after the ZOE HD release next year.

                  Edit > And Raiden was always a very weak character. So if they are really trying to start a spin-off franchise I think a resurrected Gray Fox would be a much better choice. <_<;

                    Re: Metal Gear Rising: Revengence

Raiden is a very deep character! MGS2 proved that, MGS4 made him even more interesting/ Ya they may not suit everyone's tastes for character design/development, but Raiden is like those popular people that have their haters but their fans and their values can't be denied, mew. They are cool enough to get the spotlight in MGS2, earn more praise in MGS4, and their own action game with Rising, you know Raiden is a masterpiece for Metal Gear franchise and 2nd only to Snake in the Solid series.

And Raiden could even be considered Snake's equal or successor in a way since Kojima believes Raiden is worthy to receive their own Metal Gear. Whether it's alternate universe or canon, it's all Raiden's game and Metal Gear.

It's futile to reject a popular hero in the series and industry, mew! Anyone that knows Metal Gear knows Raiden.

                      Re: Metal Gear Rising: Revengence

J9, I thought I made it clear that I just thought it better if MGS - as in Metal Gear Solid - ended as a series. They can make as many other Metal Gear series as they want, just let Solid be over as that story is really done.

Ac!d is its own series. MG and MG2, while bearing some continuity, had such paper thin stories in the 8-bit days they were pretty much their own thing. MGS has been its own thing. Rising can be its own thing, the only requirement that it needs to have is that there are Metal Gears in it. And maybe a box to hide in.

Ray, a resurrected Grey Fox would be a pretty cheap move at this point. he's already died twice - MG2, MGS.

MGS4 stuff spoilered for Ygg's sake

There is only one plot thread I can think of worth exploring - the war between Big Boss and Zero prior to the original Metal Gear. But I think even there we're more than covered, we see exactly why Big Boss becomes the man he is and how his heart was hardened. Its enough to connect the dots. The only benefit would be fleshing out the conspiracy and Zero a bit more.

Some more development details from Destructoid:

Kojima Productions is the producer of Revengeance. KP created the story for the game, managed the cutscenes and voice work. Metal Gear Solid artist Yoji Shinkawa did the character design work.

Platinum Games, the developer, will is on game design and programming, working under the supervision of Kojima Productions.

Hideo Kojima is the Executive Producer, but MGS series vet Yuji Korekado will oversee the project for KP, working alongside Platinum's Atsushi Inaba.

                        Cheap? Maybe.
                        Awesome? Very likely.
                        Better than Raiden? Most definitely.

MGS site just updated with the Revengence trailer and a new interactive timeline. I assume there's a lot to see and do in it, but I'll check most of it out later. There's also a documentary for Revengence slated to come out soon.
