Re: DIABLO III - J9's thread of infernal enthusiasm!

Bethesda didn't know what they were doing with stats for years, hell, most developers don't know what you're doing with stats anymore.

So they got rid of them and just focused on letting the player level skills and pick perks for them in Skyrim. Kingdoms of Amalur also seems to follow this mentality. Mass Effect doesn't seem all that concerned with it for individual characters so much as group or weapon bonuses. Final Fantasy was always pretty weird with them - FFVIII and FFX really being the last ones to put a really deep emphasis on stats, or in FFVIII's case, just flat out abusing stats. Well, the NIS strategy RPGs are pretty much about abuse, too.

The last JRPG to really use them deeply that I played were SMT Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga and DDS2. Then again, these were also games more about the skill bonuses/inheritance than stats. Why bother putting points into agility when I have a buff that lets me boost the shit out of agility for three turns? Most SMT games from last gen onward think like that.

I think in Blizzard's case its just time to toss them. They clearly don't know what to do with them, so why are they keeping them around?

Not 1 or 2 but Diablo 3 did.

Found a better source: Diablo: IncGamers » Jay Wilson Exclusive Part IV: Skills and Stats
Diii.net: People are wondering if there’s going to be some mechanism to allow greater character diversification in stats, given that we can not manually assign our own attribute points in Diablo 3. There will be something more than just finding +10 on an item. We’ll be able to do something more to differentiate our characters from others?

Jay Wilson: Yes. We’re stated in the past that we’re working on a new customization system. A system that’s part of your character building. Also that within the item space we’re looking for ways for more… we really prefer the single point stat customization be more item based. But we’re going to have a system to more or less replace the attribute point spending system.
That info was from Blizzcon 2009, but I never heard that it had changed. I never saw any beta footage that included anyone allocating anything whatsoever.

Apparently Diablo 3 is on track for a Q2 2012 release.

Personally, I'll be amazed if they manage to have the game even halfway balanced by that point. The devs must be busting their asses off right now. HotS is also on track for this year as well which is surprising when they last said that 2013 would be more realistic.

I thought the game was like 90% complete six months ago. Now they're cutting features? Wtf, Blizzard?

maybe a shortage of employees or a lot of complex work? well a lead designer left so I think they are like kind of insane in those offices now and barely think about anything other than the Horadric Hamburger, mew.

This surprises you? At first Starcraft II was going to be one huge game and then it had expansions slated before release. Why sell a complete experience when you can sell those features back to fans later?

Activision is a cancer to Blizzard like EA is a cancer to Bioware. The difference is its killing Blizzard more slowly. I'll just hold out for Torchlight II.

We've been over this before - SC2 is a complete experience, as are the expansions. The people who QQ'd have finally stfu (most of them anyway) by this point as they've come to realize this. WoL has close to 40 missions IIRC, and the 2 expansions will both have around 29 each. That's way more than we ever got with the original + BW, nevermind all the cool extra stuff.

Blizzard is one of those rare developers that actually takes their sweet time making sure things are good & ready, and takes input from the fans to heart (sometimes to our chagrin sadly, as with the recent Snipe nerf)
