Penny Arcade ftw ... I had a similar issue last night where instead of bows and crossbows, I was getting nothing but wands. On my barbarian. Yellow wands. Blue wands. White wands. Grey wands. *()#%*#&$*#@&$(&@#$.

SWTOR does actually have a loot system where it ONLY drops loot for the classes in the Raid. So basically it will never give you gear for say a Jedi Knight if there's no Jedi Knight in the raid.

Of course that that REALLY means is that gear will only drop for the one raid member who is fully geared and doesn't need any of it. Or if you play a Jedi Sentinel (uses medium armour) like me: it will only drop armour useful for Jedi Guardians (heavy armour) because the game flags both classes as "Jedi Knight".

They do have their 'crap' together. The server restart was to activate the real money auction house. All they did was kick everyone off, then you could log back in as normal and keep playing. Exactly what I did.

The real money auction house is still not up and running, so if that's the case then they really do not have their crap together.

I amend my previous assertion that nightmare difficulty is easy. Most of nightmare difficult is easy but the elites do not f*ck around. They do WAY more damage that their normal counterparts and the combination of just two modifiers on them can make them very difficult to deal with. The ones that get special attacks like arcane sentries you really have to dodge their attacks or you will get smoked, and if they have a support ability that makes it hard to do that like Jailer or Vortex then you better do some praying. Hell and Inferno level elites with three or four mods are going to be insane.

My misunderstanding on the maintenance. It was for working on the gold auction house, not to activate the real money one. Either way, the game was still up and running, just not the auction house(s) for that period of time. Even still, the launch of a world wide release is going quite smoothly, especially compared to most games that are regional and can't even deal with that sort of user pressure. So, yeah, I'd say they're doing just fine, considering it's still first week of the game.

Suffice it to say that people are morons. While pretty much all equipment no matter how mediocre has an asking price in the hundreds of thousands if not millions, most of the stackable resources are being auctioned at or near the price you could sell them to a vendor, which is too low by orders of magnitude depending on whether you're talking about essence or gems.

I'm almost to the end of act 3 nightmare on my furthest character, and it's getting really quite challenging. Elite fights are starting to take some skill and strategy. I'm liking the balance where I'm at now, but I'm afraid of what hell is going to be like.

It's most likely due to the account compromises when you see dirt cheap items. Check the forums, they're a lot of nerd raging by players who've had their account compromised (but not man enough to admit that their porn browsing habits screwed them over)

I rather doubt that account theft is so widespread that it's driving the entire market, especially since this was observed as early as day 2 when no thief in their right mind would have found it worth their time to fleece an account. I can't imagine how to test your theory since the commodity market is anonymous, though.

I think it's more people not having the sense to realize the default recommended price of 35 for subtle essence is ridiculous when the blue drop the essence came from could have vendored for 75 minimum and probably more like 125 on average. For the gems, I assume they are just more common drops in hell which is increasing supply to the point that crafting them is no longer practical. For example, I found my first radiant amethyst in a box late in nightmare act 3. I had been paying 3500 to Shen to craft them from perfects, but this morning I can buy 15 of them off the AH for less than that at 215 apiece. So now I have all these perfects that it's not economical to upgrade anymore, and there's nothing for me to do with them but sell them.

Nevermind the fact that in D3 they removed the level requirement on gems making them horrendously OP on low level socketed gear.

This is why I haven't even looked at Hardcore yet. I'm going to wait until I get to at least Act IV Hell if not Inferno, and then I'll start up my new barb and load her with so many Amethyst and Rubies nothing will dare to even think about looking in my general direction until Hell again.
