So new bestgreatest game ever, eh?

Or is that FFXIII-2? It certainly can't be Skyrim now, can it?

oh mew! the updated mew mew meter already determined that XIII-2 is not worthy of any further mewness! So ya that was a bit of an inaccurate forecast about XIII-2's value earlier, mew.

but Skyrim does deserve lots of mews!

I'm gonna go ahead and say it. That opening was rubbish compared to the previous games. It had no weight to it.

          I thought it was decent.

Nowhere near as amazing as Diablo II's, but still great - I actually thought LoD had the worst, with Baal just being a tool at the gates.

Oh I'm not saying it was bad, just that the others were way better.

Call me old fashioned but I'm actually going to say the first intro was the best. It did a lot without needing any words or a lot of over the top visuals. It does a good job of setting up a very particular atmosphere for the rest of the game.

I dunno, I rather loved the ending of the intro with Baal revealing himself to Marius and the whole freaking place just going up in flames. That was really one of their best pieces ever, imo.

Yes, but that wasn't the intro sequence to Diablo II.

                  Yes it was o. O

EDIT: Never mind, I was mixing up the intro with the epilogue, lol.

                  Both are so epic though.

re: DIABLO III - J9's thread of infernal enthusiasm!

I thought it was alright. I liked the part with the cross-hatch shading. I agree that it doesn't have the same atmosphere as the older cinematics. I think it's clear that Blizzard has been making Sanctuary less of a dark and menacing setting and more of a backdrop for epic adventure. I understand people having a problem with that since the flavor is less unique, but I'm ok with it as long as the story is interesting and the gameplay is engaging. I'm not married to the mood.

Thinking back, Diablo 1 was almost a survival horror game. If you weren't careful you could get yourself swarmed and lose everything you'd worked to collect for that character (especially on warrior). That threat made advancing deeper into the dungeon genuinely scary, and the sound design was super creepy with headphones in a dark room. Diablo 2 was far less punishing to the player and diluted the haunting atmosphere with some other themes and open outdoor areas. Diablo 3 seems to be continuing the trend by emphasizing epic events, character progression and the power fantasy, while having a more detailed and directed story.

I find Diablo II still maintained a fair deal of darkness about it, though you're certainly right in that the majority of it wasn't nearly as terrifying as the monastery depths.

I for one, would prefer they keep that dark mood/theme about it - that's part of what makes Sanctuary unique and interesting. The books do a very good job of this, FYI and are worth reading if you haven't already. The Sin Wars was OK, but the other 4 are just magnificent.

I've often wondered why the hell Blizzard didn't just go with Diablo for it's MMO setting, and maybe it's because they want to keep Diablo players to what they're used to? That is, an MMO would just be like a bigger, grander Diablo that you have to pay for whereas WoW was a completely different take on an existing world filled with plenty of lore to be explored. And starcraft, while equally thrilling in it's own way, just doesn't really lend itself at all to the MMO scene - at least not as easily.

TM's right - the original Diablo was pretty much like RE, PE or any other similar games at the time. It made you hesitant since you were usually rewarded with death for charging in.

Not only that, but SO FREAKING MANY of the enemies when you get into the catacombs (almost looks like a mine really) and downward seem to have knock-back attacks out the ass which just makes life hell for Warriors. The only thing more annoying than being swarmed by a bunch of overpowered monsters is when you can't even attack said monsters due to their constant knock-back spam!!!
