  • SKYWARD SWORD - "Best Zelda Game Ever"

According to initial reviews on Metacritic, of which I cannot link at the moment since I am at work (will append later)... the latest Zelda is the BEST Zelda game of all time. ALL TIME.

While I always take comments like those with a grain of salt until I see further confirmation, I at least am getting more and more excited for this game. Plus with the RPG elements thrown in (I even heard the collection and creation systems likened to Skyrim?!?! OMG?!?!?!), I think it's time to create a new dedicated thread and commence Hylian worship and moblin sacrifices in anticipation.

    1. Right-handed Link still irks me.

    2. It's Hylean, not elven. Get it right.

Haha... I'm definitely getting excited for this game. I've edited the post to say "Hylian", good call! Will need to add pics and vids when I get home from work to make it an official intro post.

I agree about the right-handed thing, they need to make it an option to select which hand at least.

Did I mention that with the right ingredients you can make a Potion into a Potion+? WTF IS THIS SKYRIM IN MY ZELDA GAME?!

At least I'm not the only one who was off there.

Between thinking that the last j9 post was by Malacite and that this one was by j9, I've really been off lately.

This is NOT a good sign. She's starting to influence us. I didn't even notice at first.

Almost laughed in stats class. So yeah, did a double take as well.

I am very excited for Skyward Sword as well. Saving money is hard for a grad student, but this will be so worth it.

The only thing I want out of Skyward Sword is for them to stop handing me boss asses on a silver platter. They get bonus points if the water temple is fun and Ganon isn't the final boss though.

                Tell me about it.

I loved Twilight Princess, but it had some real pushover bosses, for the most part. Plenty of them were really cool, but all it took was like three solid hits to bring them down.

And I was also disappointed to see that it was Ganon again at the end. Zant was looking like he would be an awesome badass alternative, but then the game was all "NOPE- he's a goofball. Finish him off so you can pass go and collect your Ganon."

That left the worst fucking taste in my mouth. It was infuriating to find that the asshole that's been screwing you from the start of the game is some buttonmasher with swordchucks. It was hard enough to give a fuck about Ganon when he's been absent for the first 98% of the game; they just had to go and turn his fights into a series of minigames and totally trivialize Midna after you bust your ass getting those Shadow Masks on top of that. So much for forbidden magic. After the high note that Wind Waker was, the ending of TP was...not very satisfying. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the hell out of the rest of the game though. I just wish it didn't leave me with such an empty feeling after every boss.

Back on topic, I've been reading good things about the use of Wii Motion+ to deliver angled sword slashes against enemies that block in certain directions. I'm looking forward to more interesting sword fights and motion controls that don't suck.

Re: SKYWARD SWORD - "Best Zelda Game Ever"

No worries, an interview mentioned by bbqkitten in a previous Zelda thread said we would not see Ganon in this game.

They also said the overworld will have a ton of stuff to do, something that hasn't been true of any 3D Zelda game yet, except for maybe Majora's Mask (Wind Waker had a huge overworld with stuff to do but it took forever to get to everything because of the sailing). Twilight Princess had almost nothing in the overworld... so I'm glad they're improving on that.

My only concern is the environments. Everything I've seen so far looks a bit bland. Hopefully they have some good variation in scenery as you play through the game.

Re: SKYWARD SWORD - "Best Zelda Game Ever"

I know some people hated the wolf sections, as they felt they kind of dragged down the pace of the game, but I enjoyed them, for the most part. They provided a very different atmosphere, and I liked the different combat style in those sections.

In general though, I thought the game did so much right. It had one of the longest quests in any Zelda game, had a nice dark tone to it, had the series biggest selection of items yet (some of which were badass, like the double hookshots and the spinning top/blade thing), used the Wiimote in good ways (aiming tools like the bow and hookshot felt so right) and, last but not least, had in my opinion the best companion of any Zelda game yet. Midna was awesome.

As to not derail the thread too much, I'm really looking forward to Skyward Sword, as many of the the new things they are trying with this game sound really fun and exciting, but I'm going to have to postpone getting it until I finish up some of my recent gaming purchases.

That and I'll be playing Saints Row 3 and probably Skyrim too, before I pick up anything else. :x

Am I the only one who felt the final fight scene in TP on horseback was pretty epic? At least in spirit, if not execution.

It was a cool concept, but it was pretty obnoxious to play through. The same applies to the duel that came afterwards, except that wasn't even obnoxious, just dumb. I won by waiting for that (A) reaction command 3 times.

Aiming with the Wiimote was a step up, but I found attacking with the Wiimote to be a big step down. It would usually register an extra swing on my regular hits, my Spin Attack often came out late or none at all, and it had trouble differentiating between certain actions like the shield bash and helm splitter.

And yes, Midna is the best sidekick.

Me too. After that fairly difficult final battle in Wind Waker, I was really looking forward to something epic. The final battles in TP ended up just... too easy. FYI Miyamoto, by the end of the game, people tend to have a lot of hearts. You can make that huge sword Ganon's holding do more than 2 damage, and you can make him hit multiple times in a row or something... anything to make it more challenging.

But... once again I digress. I wanted to mention that at the Zelda orchestra concert, I saw a lot of people just shaking the Wii remotes like crazy instead of trying to actually attack, and they were getting their asses handed to them. Hopefully the general public catches on that this is more than just a waggle fest, because otherwise, they're gonna have a hell of a time killing anything.

My favorite part of TP was the sky temple and the twin hookshot though. That shit was epic.
