You still don't get it. Sony and Microsoft are already working on their next generation designs, and they already have their own plans. Are they keeping an eye on what Nintendo are doing? Of course. But your assumption that they're going to drop everything and play follow the leader if Nintendo somehow manages to catch some lightning in a bottle with the Wii U is ridiculous.

Microsoft already has a competing technology in Kinect, and they're much better off developing a stronger iteration with better framerate and accuracy than going with Nintendo's tablet idea. They don't need a tablet - you can hold a controller in your hand and gesture with the other hand, or talk, or turn your hand, to use Kinect already.

Sony has less invested in that arena (PS Move), but they're much bigger believers in comfortable gaming being the keystone to success with the hardcore. I might expect Sony to ship the PS4 with a standard PS Eye or some variant thereof (and like MS Kinect, probably with better resolution and/or framerate), but dropping everything just to create a touchpad controller? That's rank insanity. Sony does a lot of stupid things, but that's higher levels of stupid than is plausible.

I agree that my statement of Microsoft and Sony just stopping on a dime is hyperbole at best, so I apologize. But that doesn't mean that they aren't likely to change or adapt their development to address the possiblity that they will end up repeating this current "console war" if they do nothing. It is to their detriment to just observe Nintendo but not react at all. Given the current economic climate and the problems facing the European Union and the United States, it would be in their best interest to make sure that they consolidate their position in the console market. Why is it a big deal? Well, computer and video games are eclipsing the traditional entertainment industries and with that kind of huge financial incentive, I doubt ANYONE is going to dismiss any slight advantages a device will have over another. The market is a tricky thing, the customers are fickle and I get all that. But I'm sure this isn't lost upon whatever is in the works for Microsoft and Sony.

I really want to see all of them succeed because competition (not collusion like you will find in our domestic cellphone carriers) breeds innovation and produces a healthy economy for the industry. But marginalizing the industry and being indifferent about your competitor in the hopes of carving a territory is not just financially immoral, but it is also a questionable business tactic.

You can get a blatant flavor in the tropism presented in Hyperdimension Neptunia for that perspective is you want it in another form.

I don't see this as an argument at all. It's just me and Icemage having a discussion regarding the future (arguably, we're both speculating, where Icemage has some experience with the industry as a game developer and I am just going by news and editorials from news sources and the industry wires)

I'd hate to see that any kind of discussion where we have two sides to it automatically is flagged as a "fight".

and honestly I would not put it past Sony or Microsoft to take something from Nintendo's next system.

You really, REALLY do not want to go there with me on this topic, do you?

If you want clarification on why I'm putting my foot down on this, it's because a moderator's task to keep the forums readable for everyone. While people on a standard broadband connection and a high resolution monitor have no problems reading a page full of large images, and hardly anyone uses dial-up any more, there are an ever-increasing number of people who read forums via their relatively low resolution smartphones, which tend to have very small screens and very low 3G bandwidth speeds.

I'm not saying you can't post things that are pertinent/funny. But keep it in spoiler tags so it's at least optional for people to read it without making the page look like it got hit with a nuclear weapon.

You do realise the following right?

1) Images still load when spoiler tagged. A huge stack of images hidden with spoiler tags will eat up a chunk of bandwidth as those images are being loaded without you knowing.

2) There are people with larger avatars and signature images in terms of file size than that image. To note a single case of someone posting a reaction macro in a thread is silly when there's larger images and gifs in people's avatars and sigs.

3) If you're that bothered about seeing images on your smartphone then you can simply block them to save 3G bandwidth. Also going to refer you back to points 1 and 2.

4) I'm more than willing to put money on the fact that you wouldn't have freaked out if it was a regular reaction image, rather than a pony one. I posted a pony one for the simple reason that it was one of the least offensive ones I could find on a google image search.

5) It would have been easier and far more civil to simply PM me and ask to wrap it in spoiler tags (however I do refer you to pints 1, 2 and 3), rather than editing a post that does nothing to break the forum ToS while also further derailing the thread.
