I remember paying something like $55 for The Legend of Zelda II and Megaman II on the NES, and that was in 1988. Adjusting for inflation that's about $100 today. SNES games were also in the $60+ range too.

I paid $79 for my copy of Final Fantasy III when it FIRST came out (III as in the US numeration, not the Japanese aka official numeration) Chalk it up to shipping costs but I doubt it considering I purchased it at the Sears Gaming Dept. I don't think I ever paid less than $60 for any SNES games on release day and if I did pay less, it was around the time the next gen system were out (PSX) and that kind of forced Nintendo to push down prices of the SNES games to remain competitve.

I've paid between $90 and $130 for SFC import carts as well and I have the original boxes with the price labels intact and the ink has not faded very much the past 20 years.

True, but it just seems like there's way more now - not to mention NES & SNES games didn't cost anywhere near as much as games do now, even with inflation.
That can't be right, because cartridges were waaaaay more expensive than any kind of optical media. Google seems to agree:
    STARMEN.NET - MOTHER 2 / EarthBound
most expensive SNES games at release - GameSpot Forums - Legacy Platforms
What was the original cost of Sega Genesis & SNES games? - Yahoo! Answers
What did SNes games cost? - Yahoo! Answers
Chrono Trigger Original Price - Retrogaming Roundtable

I know you didn't mention N64, but it's still cartridge-based and 2 generations behind, so:
While most PlayStation games rarely exceeded US$50,[60] N64 games could reach US$79.99,[60] such as the first pressing of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.[63]

The difference between the NES / SNES and the Wii isn't the volume of shovelware. It's more that the lion's share of good quality games made it to the NES and SNES. The Wii has seen precious few of the best games of this console generation, and the vast majority of the ones that are good on the Wii are from Nintendo.

There are a large number of significant non-exclusive games/franchises that just never made it to the Wii, or did so in a barely recognizable form. Bioshock, Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto, Soul Calibur*, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy**, Devil May Cry, Dead Space, Assassin's Creed, Oblivion, Fallout, Borderlands, Dark Souls, Deus Ex, Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire, Ninja Gaiden, Portal, Batman Arkham, etc. and the list goes on and on and on. THAT is why the Wii's library sucks, because if you remove the 1st party stuff, the rest of the library collapses like a house of cards, not because there's a ton of shovelware (which every console gets to some extent).

    * Ok, there's Soul Calibur: Legends, but if you count that as a Soul Calibur game, I've a bridge to sell you.
** yeah, yeah FFXIII sucks, but frankly FF: Crystal Chronicles sucks even worse...

oh Dolphin emulator I love you ^.^ (the Wii U will also upscale Wii games to 1080p)

many of the Wii games do truly look wonderful in the dolphin emulator, in fact for games that use a controller I have copied my games to my PC and used the emulator over the system itself for this reason.

Still can not get the Fatal Frame 4 + English patch ISO to work though.... -.-

*stares at the Wii's massive stockpile of shovelware & otherwise gimmicky, over priced crap*

Nintendo made it clear that the Wii U will be true 1080p. PS3 and 360 are only 720 as it is, so at least they're improving on the current gen offerings somewhat.

But, you have to understand, they are late to the party regarding (a) true HD and (b) 2008 graphic technology.

If Wii U can replicate the kind of graphic quality that is found in a game like FFXIV, then really, there's no need to push that envelope, because you'll start to hit diminishing returns for 1080p, assuming that's going to be the common standard for display going forward for the next 10 years.

However, if all it does is offer HD at 720p ... then all bets are off. Sure, they could probably introduce the Wii U at $199 with a hob-cob of dated technology, but that would just reinforce the stereotype that Nintendo just "doesn't get it" and this would make it less likely that 3rd party support will be there for the console.

Remember, this isn't just about Nintendo, but about the partnerships they can create and the environment that would be most friendly and most ideal for development. This has nothing to do with just pure horsepower of a console per se but if it also enhances that development, that environment, then that's something Nintendo cannot afford to ignore. If they cannot muster enough 3rd party support for the console, then it's doomed like the Nintendo GameCube was (anyone remember that fiasco?)

The key for Nintendo to continue with the success that Wii offered is to (a) expand their demographics to include "hard core" gamers and (b) attract both indie developers as well as marque 3rd party titles. While not mutually exclusive, both of these points require a beefier hardware and does require additional support for development, especially since the trend for development studios is towards cross-platform releases (e.g., FFXIII for both XBox 360 and PS3) Having a disparity in hardware will only turn developers off and you're forced to recycling your old IPs and risk "burn out" towards your platform. Afterall, you can only ask so much of Mario to sell your hardware.

That would work well with full installation disks, just like a MMOGs or Steam games you could simply install your game in any number of ways (digital download, from a friend's disk, from a gameshop disk/vending machine to an external drive, etc.) and just require an account* linked to your game codes and hardware to play the game.

    * Global please, regional restrictions will only encourage piracy anyway.
