Re: PS4 to Launch in 2013, Xbox 720 to launch in 2014

But then again anyone can make 1080p graphics when they look like Nintendo games look. For all we know it'll just be StarFox 128 HD using the same models and slightly larger textures with maybe some background scale and rotation for effects.

    In full HD!

Right. That "Seal of Quality" used to stand for something.

Go back and play a ton of third party--Nintendo Approved--NES and SNES games and tell me there's not a fair amount of shit.

Except the 3D models and textures used on the Wii are just fine. The limited resolution and lack of anti-aliasing is what kills it. Go play Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy or Other M in 1080p and tell me it looks bad.

oh Dolphin emulator I love you ^.^ (the Wii U will also upscale Wii games to 1080p)

many of the Wii games do truly look wonderful in the dolphin emulator, in fact for games that use a controller I have copied my games to my PC and used the emulator over the system itself for this reason.

Still can not get the Fatal Frame 4 + English patch ISO to work though.... -.-

True, but it just seems like there's way more now - not to mention NES & SNES games didn't cost anywhere near as much as games do now, even with inflation.

Unless something has changed in the last few months, no, actually, it won't. :/ Not sure what the reasoning is behind that, since the graphics card "should" have enough juice to handle the upscaling more or less all by itself, but it seems you're going to have to stay with the Dolphin emulator for Wii games in HD resolution.

The difference between the NES / SNES and the Wii isn't the volume of shovelware. It's more that the lion's share of good quality games made it to the NES and SNES. The Wii has seen precious few of the best games of this console generation, and the vast majority of the ones that are good on the Wii are from Nintendo.

There are a large number of significant non-exclusive games/franchises that just never made it to the Wii, or did so in a barely recognizable form. Bioshock, Mass Effect, Grand Theft Auto, Soul Calibur*, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy**, Devil May Cry, Dead Space, Assassin's Creed, Oblivion, Fallout, Borderlands, Dark Souls, Deus Ex, Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire, Ninja Gaiden, Portal, Batman Arkham, etc. and the list goes on and on and on. THAT is why the Wii's library sucks, because if you remove the 1st party stuff, the rest of the library collapses like a house of cards, not because there's a ton of shovelware (which every console gets to some extent).

                * Ok, there's Soul Calibur: Legends, but if you count that as a Soul Calibur game, I've a bridge to sell you.
** yeah, yeah FFXIII sucks, but frankly FF: Crystal Chronicles sucks even worse...

not to mention NES & SNES games didn't cost anywhere near as much as games do now, even with inflation.
Mal, are you smoking something, or are you too young to actually remember the consoles you're talking about and just spouting nonsense to try and sound knowledgeable?

I remember paying something like $55 for The Legend of Zelda II and Megaman II on the NES, and that was in 1988. Adjusting for inflation that's about $100 today. SNES games were also in the $60+ range too.

That can't be right, because cartridges were waaaaay more expensive than any kind of optical media. Google seems to agree:
                  STARMEN.NET - MOTHER 2 / EarthBound
most expensive SNES games at release - GameSpot Forums - Legacy Platforms

What did SNes games cost? - Yahoo! Answers

I know you didn't mention N64, but it's still cartridge-based and 2 generations behind, so:
While most PlayStation games rarely exceeded US$50,[60] N64 games could reach US$79.99,[60] such as the first pressing of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.[63]

I paid $79 for my copy of Final Fantasy III when it FIRST came out (III as in the US numeration, not the Japanese aka official numeration) Chalk it up to shipping costs but I doubt it considering I purchased it at the Sears Gaming Dept. I don't think I ever paid less than $60 for any SNES games on release day and if I did pay less, it was around the time the next gen system were out (PSX) and that kind of forced Nintendo to push down prices of the SNES games to remain competitve.

I've paid between $90 and $130 for SFC import carts as well and I have the original boxes with the price labels intact and the ink has not faded very much the past 20 years.

Damn that sucks! I had heard it would upscale as well, must've been the same incorrect source. I'm hoping we can transfer saves from our memory cards to it like we could with the PS2-PS3... however I'm not expecting it.

Speaking of, I'm really hoping our Wii Virtual Console library and saves are transferrable. If not, I'm going to be fairly pissed. They really need to get a unified online system together. With the upcoming Vita, for example, I know that out of the box it will be able to play hundreds of PSN titles, including classics like FFIX. With the upcoming Wii U, I have no idea what the hell it's gonna be able to play, nor do I have any faith in Nintendo to make it convenient by any sense of the word to transfer what we purchased on the Wii.

                          Ugh.

Eh I was only like 10 or 11 I think when N64 came out, but I don't remember NES games ever being that high.

My SEGA CD system on the other hand, holy shit that thing was expensive when we got it...

                              Possible, but....

I think this is a coin flip, at least until we hear something more concrete from Nintendo.

On the one hand, you've got the Wii, where it's literally impossible to move purchase licenses from one machine to another without sending hardware back to Nintendo. So if you buy a Black Wii to replace a White one - even one that still works - you can't get your Virtual Console purchases moved over without sending BOTH units back to Nintendo (and getting charged a "repair" fee, which currently runs somewhere on the order of ~$80).

On the other hand, you've got the DSi Transfer Tool for the 3DS, which lets you move your purchases from a DSi to a 3DS, which does work.

In theory, Nintendo could probably launch a "Wii U Transfer Channel" app on the Wii so that Wii U owners can sync up and transfer their purchases from their Wii to the Wii U.

All that said, I still think they really need a unified login per user, and for some reason completely outside of my perception, they don't want to do it. Even the 3DS doesn't have a unified login, which is just bananas.

With the upcoming Vita, for example, I know that out of the box it will be able to play hundreds of PSN titles, including classics like FFIX. It's a little too early to be ultra-skeptical. The technology "should" be possible to do these things. Whether Nintendo actually puts out the effort to do so remains to be seen.

yeap happened to me, I had about 200$ worth of VC/WW stuff on my original white Wii, and it met....an...acident -.-

open window + 4 stories + wii + ground = something that does not even look like a Wii anymore. (and no I did not throw it out the window, we where cleaning, and his TV is next to the Window, and the Wii was next to the TV...I bumped it -.-)

I was mad and so I tossed it out and when I returned from my trip, I got me another one at work, called Nintendo and they would not do it since I did not have the old Wii anymore (even though I could verify and they could as well all my VC/WW stuff -.-)

So I lost it all, but they sent me a free copy of StarFox 64 3D as a "jester of kindness" and to be honest, the rep used this phrase so much, that it started to get annoying.

It is cool that they gave me something for the trouble, and I wont lie, I am enjoying the hell out of the game, but it still sucks ;p

I am going to rebuy at least my Wiiware stuff, but I better be able to transfer it to my Wii U -.-
