  • 2011 TGS stuff thread

Its all really just getting started right now, but Sony mentioned that the were looking into a UMD issue for PS Vita. Its early, so I'm posting this half-grumpy from getting out of bed. Someone's carpool buddy just HAD to honk their horn in front of my apartment.

Yeah, we've heard that one before. I'm sure the same guy that was on the case for that on one with PSP Go is really working hard to make that one not happen again.

Otherwise it was a kind of boring presentation where PS Vita was taken through the paces of the startup screen and some of the web-browsing features and the packed-in mini games. The browser looks awesome, though, way better than PSP's was. Seems a bit more capable than the 3DS browser as well, though I didn't see whether or not it supported flash, which has remained a sticking point for both Nintendo and Sony browsers so far.

Also, nothing about the battery life on Vita. Pretty much a sign we can expect something on par with the 3DS now, I guess. Funny how these days talking about battery life is such a low priority for both Sony and Nintendo.

I do plan to pick up a Vita at launch in the US and I'm stocking up the downloadable PSN titles, but the whole 3G aspect of it is laughable to me. I'll just go get my portable 4G/Wi-Fi capable router and enjoy 4G for any of my portable devices. Bad enough cell phone carriers hose you with their data plans for one phone, I'm not playing for 3G just for Vita, either.

On to news that makes me kind of happy, Vita's getting Ultimate MVC3 at launch... but it is its own retail entry, it seems, and not a spiffy PS3/Vita deal. But yeah, Mr. Ono likes putting fighting games on the handhelds.

SE seems to be following the "transfarring" idea for HD re-releases. FFX is going to be remastered for PS3 and will have Vita compatibility. It does seem, however, SE is doing these as a stand-alone remaster and not collections like MGS or ZOE collection. So if you wanted FFX-2 and FFXII with that, tough luck.

Seems stingy to me but if they go and rerecord the Luca scene and about 50% of Yuna's lines, I might be inclined to forgive the greedy bastardness of this non-collection-that-should-be-a-collection-with-FFX-2-and-FFXII-in-it.

mmmm remaster of FFX for PS3/Vita interesting, even though I dont play FFXI anymore, I am still waiting to see if they really put it on Vita. I know, part of me says it wont happen, but a small part of me says it just might.

Hi, I'm Square-Enix. You might remember me from such acclaimed series as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. I can't really be bothered to try and make good games any more, so please keep buying games we made before that you liked because we've made them a little prettier.

3-5 hours with default background light setting, wireless and bluetooth off and headphoes. Charges in about 2 hrs 40 min. So its a little worse than the 3DS, but charges just a bit faster.

Ah, so someone did catch the info and post it, thanks. Pretty much what was expected.

Be a little fair. Its easy revenue for any studio and they did make it compatible for two platforms rather than one. You can't really fault any developer for wanting to make some money off their backlog.

Though it seems its OK when it happens with its a Sony platform and people rage when it happens on a Nintendo platform. That I don't really understand. I think its a nice thing for both, really.

At the end of the day, anyone that makes these HD re-releases compatible with PS3 and Vita can have my support. Its not the UMD compatibility for Vita or PS2 BC I wanted for PS3, but it is an answer and if I can take the experiences to and from home, all the better.

I'd really like an X / X-2 collection with re-rendered CS in full 1080p format. That alone would make it worth the retail price.

Eh, I like FFX a lot, but still not impressed.

3-5 hours of battery life is just as terrible as the 3DS. This is a portable gaming machine, not something I want to tether to an outlet for long trips. I am disappoint, Sony. Maybe we'll see a better solution than a battery replacement pack (I'm currently using this awesome Thrustmaster T-X3 Battery/Grip for my PSP which extends the battery life to much more respectable 10 hours.

              Thrustmaster T-X3 Battery/Grip

I imagine Sony will want to work pretty hard on a UMD add-on for the Vita if they want to not piss off the Monster Hunter crowd in Japan. I could see selling an external UMD drive for ~$40 being reasonable, but I'll believe it exists when I see it.

Other than that, lots of cool games on display. How many of those games will make launch is an open question, though. I get the feeling that a lot of those games are still more than a couple of months away from being completed, and the Vita release slate will end up looking a lot like the 3DS release slate (somewhat less retreads, but still not a lot of choices).

EDIT: Wha-hey? Since when did we have an Amazon plugin for the forum?

Surprised they didn't push for a 360 release. Apparently some people enjoyed FFXIII on the Xbox.

Here's the thing with FFX though -

Is it just the FFX we got? Or is it FFX International which only came out in Japan with the updated Sphere Grid and other goodies?

If it's the latter, then hells-fucking-yes. X is one of the only titles I don't already own and if they redo 12 as well with the same deal (fuck the License Board, I want my Zodiac job system) then that's even more win.

X-2 can rot in hell though. The combat was fun and that was about it...

                          you gotta be kidding me.

6 NEEDS a remake. Far more than 7 does.

Or Final Fantasy VII ~Alternative~ where Zack lives and uses Cloud's death as an incentive to score with Yufi, Aerith and Tifa.
