It's hard to want to even debate with someone that's got the name OMGWTFBBQKITTEN.

Bah, I missed the personal attack. Note that "OMGBBQ" kinda stuff is just mocking people who need to abbreviate. Oh, well, its probably linked to the fact I part-time for Gamestop and Absentia would just rage on that alone.

My disagreement with Icemage basically boils down to me wanting the conclusion while everyone else just jumping to said conclusion and assuming the worst or something sinister/weird about it.

At the end of the day, all of this stuff is preliminary info and could very well change before the game is released. Console games with monthly fees tend to not be received well in the west, particularly when they are not really MMOs (see: Monster Hunter Tri, which is why the fee was dropped for US release). But when you even have MMOs going free-to-play these days, I wouldn't hold my breath that this idea would last.

I would even wager the "online only" part would be wildly unpopular and something SE will reconsider before release, particularly given this is Japan we're talking about and they don't have the same slavish love for online play that western gamers do, which is why there are all these DRMs out there now.

The problem with DRMs is essentially people complaining about then, but then being DUMBASSES and running out to buy the newest game with one anyway.

As for whether or I would buy DQX, I dunno.

FFXI and PSO both taught me a big lesson about online games on consoles - they get in the way of other games I could be playing on consoles. Its why I haven't jumped on DCU and won't get FFXIV for PS3. I'm even wary of the idea when I get a better PC (which is hopefully soon). Why have a Steam or GOG account and just waste the whole thing on an MMORPG or P2PRPG?

After playing Phantasy Star Portable 2 on my PSP and PSZero on DS, I feel better about having that kind of game there. Handhelds tend to be more inviting to variety and I wouldn't play such a game too long considering I can boot up an GBA or PSOne classic on a handheld, too.

Diablo-clones don't have the investment of loyalty that MMOs require of you. Sure, the PUGs can suck, but you're all partners in greed now that the lootpools are shared and everyone can eventually get what they want without having to waste each other's time on things like 21-24 hour HNM spawns. And if you have a small group of frends to play with, all the better, much better than what you'd have to put up with in an MMO.

So I could get DQX under that reasoning, but it really would depend on what else Wii U is getting and how much of it and if that's worth paying monthly for. I do know I regret paying monthly just be jerked around in FFXI as much as I was by people only out for themselves and not the betterment of the linkshells I was in.

If MMOs would move away from large-group activity, they'd be better for it.

      /end rant and ramble

I wouldn't rage that you work part-time for Gamestop. If that's how you need to make a living, then that's fine.

the thing is I do see this happening, Monster Hunter and Phantasy Star Online/Universe are very very popular over there.

If DQX is anything like them.......oh god they will flock to it.

They already flock to DQ, its the one RPG powerhouse that Monster Hunter hasn't really demolished. Final Fantasy is the one that seems to be struggling in the face of Monster Hunter and it doesn't help that many other RPG studios are making significant gains.

I mean, Atlus and Marvelous might seem small now, but I wouldn't underestimate them. People used to joke about a Persona fighting game in light of Dissidia and now that's happening.
