  • DQX announced for Wii and Wii U

Well, it wasn't exactly a secret, but DQX has been in the works for some time now and confirmed for Wii at the very least, but we haven't seen much of anything on it until now and it turns out there will be an HD version for Wii-U as well.

Its actually going to be a fairly similar affair to DQIX on the DS, which isn't surprising given DQIX was the best selling DQ game ever. Its going to have a nice sizable offline quest with downloadable missions, but also will have online play with friends.

Seems the online aspect will be more MMO-esque turn-based action while the single-player portion will remain traditional turn-based fare. Either way, random encounters are once again not a factor. Makes sense, as turn-based online play doesn't sound terribly thrilling. Sort of similar to Demon's souls however, even if you're going it alone on the turn-based adventure, you'll see other players running about doing heroics.

There does seem to be a crafting system as well, they have a video of a character doing a tailoring mini-game. I'm hoping the treasure maps make a comeback, but given this was all presented in Japanese I have no clue if they mentioned it.

There seem to be five races to choose from and all the usual jobs look to be there. Here's a link to a bunch of trailers and stuff

Loads and loads of Dragon Quest X info and footage -Destructoid

I have my doubts this would make it in time for the US Wii-U launch given how long it took us to get the DQIX and the three DQ remake DS got, but even so, its certainly something to look forward to.

I wonder what the thought process at Square-Enix was for making an MMO on the Wii. We saw with FFXI that there were a ton of limitations on what could be done because of PS2 support, and the Wiimote is the absolute last interface I'd ever want to use for an MMO. And it being Square-Enix, how much does anyone want to bet there's a monthly fee for accessing the online features?

Fortunately, from what I've read the game is still fully playable offline, but... still a very strange announcement.

I dought it really is an "MMORPG" persay, I am guessing it will be more like DQIX or PhantasyStar Online/Universe

but even then, yeah no way to really "update" the game, it will be PSO/PSU all lover again -.-

I don't see what's so strange here. They already did similar features with DQIX, which had Monster Hunter all up in it and the Monster Hunter most people play isn't the MMO on PC and Xbox, but the P2P/local play version on PSP and MHTri on the Wii.

I don't see a monthly fee happening, as its not an MMO at all. People keep genearlizing "Online RPG" as "MMO" far too much for my liking, yet no one ever asserts that Diablo is an MMO (though thanks to Blizzard's choices D3 might as well fucking be one now with it being online-only and catering the the ebay crowd).

Simply put, MMOs are time sinks in which you inevitably rely on others to help build your character in a persistent online world that changes even as you're not playing it. This isn't that. You're not forming long-term alliances with other players via guilds and the world evolves as much as any single player game does, which is it moves with out and no one else. That's just a plain peer-to-peer RPG like the older Diablo, Phantasy Star or Monster Hunter.

That and MMOs doesn't have offline modes, they're distinctly online-only (which some people confuse with a DRM, though it Diablo 3's case, it really is a DRM because there's no logical reason for it otherwise).

Also, Wii-U version means standard controls are pretty much a given for either version. There are plenty of games that support Classic Controller Pro out there. Monster Hunter Tri is one of them and it also had keyboard support, which any system with a USB port should have. I never really used the Wiimote for Monster Hunter save for journal entries, Capcom just didn't know what to do there.

          People aren't just generalizing.

The official announcement has a vague reference to "price / usage fee to be determined". This might end up like Monster Hunter Tri, which has a subscription in Japan but not elsewhere, but time will tell.

What worries me personally is this:

          スクウェア・エニックス サポートセンター

          (mangled through Google translator)
"The first few times to start the game is playable offline, all the elements to play the game requires an Internet connection."

That's going a few steps beyond what Demon's Souls does to something more like what Diablo III is at the very least.

              Bah, on the Wii though.

If only IX had multiplayer over Wi-Fi, then this would be a happy ending.

So does every online game depending upon what service you use and what your plan with that service is, this could be just that or a fee.

Google translator: Its still not that reliable, especially when taken literally..

I think its really "The main quest is playable offline, but to access all of the game's features an internet connection will be required." That would be true of many games these days and not overreaching in the slightest.

Keep in mind this is SE, not EA or Activsion. I don't have Big Brother peering into Deus Ex Human Revolution or Final Fantasy XIII each time I boot them up.

Ok, this is from Kotaku, which isn't always the most reliable source. However, it IS posted by Brian Ashcraft, who does read Japanese quite fluently.

Dragon Quest X Needs the Internet And Extra Money, Too

Originally posted by Brian Ashcraft, Kotaku Japan
Dragon Quest IX was the deal of the century. It had something like seventy hours of single player gameplay, checking off two things that Japanese gamers love: meaty RPGs and playing solo. DQX is a different beast.

An official Square Enix FAQ regarding the game noted that while DQX can be played alone, it can only be played offline for the first few hours. After that, it's necessary to play online.

The Wii isn't exactly the easiest console to get online. One of the questions in the FAQ is how to get the Wii online.

Moreover, Square Enix have cleared up any confusion regarding whether the game will require an extra fee on top of what gamers will pay for the title. Gamers will need to pay to play online.

To recap: It's only possible to play DQX for a few hours offline at the game's beginning. Then, players must take the game online. To play online, they are required to pay a fee. Phew, I was worried for a minute, because that sounded really fair. Not.

Square Enix currently has no plans to release Dragon Quest X on other platforms. It does have plans to make lots of money with DQX.
Do you STILL think people are being alarmist?

                    EDIT: Independent confirmation from Wired

                    Wired article on DQX Online

It has never gone out of style, selling millions of copies every time a new edition gets released.

That’s why gamers were shocked Monday morning to hear Square Enix’s plans for the next installment of the series. It was long known that Dragon Quest X would be released for Nintendo’s Wii. What no one could have predicted was that it would be an online game, one with massively multiplayer elements and an as-yet-undetermined monthly service fee. The Wii version will be released in Japan in 2012, with an upgraded version for Nintendo’s new Wii U console following later.

All I wanted was confirmation from someone that could actually read Japanese. I just wonder why most game news blogs can't just find someone to do that by default before running around with some gobbledygook they got from Google Translate.

Posting the information without a source well before having it translated is something I just consider irresponsible.

Also, as a reminder of why Google Translate is a joke.

Granted they put the lyrics through a dozen languages, but it still would have been screwy from one or two. We're still several years away from that sort of thing being reliable.

No, I used Google translate. The people posting the commentary were Japanese members on 2ch and other JP blogs, which got picked up elsewhere.

You seem to be having a rather big context problem today. You think you're the only one that uses Google Translate to pass along news. If it were just you, it wouldn't be big enough to rank as a pet peeve, but when you have the likes of Jim Sterling out there doing copy-pasta with no fact-checking it does indeed begin to rank as a pet peeve.

Had someone with a bit more respect for journalism (wait... who does that anymore?) just come out and said from the start that "SE plans to charge for this, I know Japanese and have translated it," there wouldn't have been speculation otherwise for the day the incomplete info got out there.

I could complain to the sites, but they always have the "we're news bloggers, not journalists" copout going for them.

Well, I am SOOOOO sorry (no I'm not) that someone with bona fide Japanese credentials didn't immediately waltz out an unimpeachable translation just for you. Had you done even a little bit of fact-checking yourself, you'd have found that the complaints were stemming from Japanese blogs, and we wouldn't be having this unfortunate exchange with egg all over your face.
