I got Sneak to 100, and it is absolutely nuts. I can just about walk up to people in broad daylight, directly in their line of sight and not get detected. I can't pull that off yet, but I'm pretty close.
The Sneak perk at 100 is equally nuts. It basically lets me get all the free sneak attacks I want in the middle of combat. I don't even bother using power attacks anymore, it's faster to just drop into Sneak mode and get yet another throat slicing kill. It's going to be difficult to go back to playing a non-sneaky character after this.
I hear a lot about how enchanting and smithing is OP as hell, but honestly...Sneak at 100 is pretty much all I need to absolutely demolish anything short of a Dragon Priest.Server: Midgardsormr -> Quetzalcoatl -> Valefor

Sneak 100 is pretty sweet. I didn't get the 100 perk yet but definitely getting it once I max my enchanting and get Daedric smithing... so at least two more perks to go. Sneak is brutal in this game. I've been trying to kill in different ways since getting Sneak maxed. Lately I've just been running in with sword and board taking on as many people as I can at once. It's been pretty fun. Forget frontal attacks man, you can just walk into the center and wreck people from the inside out. Seriously, that last Sneak perk ups your damage output tremendously in a 'fair fight'. It was a bit of a game changer for me. Getting caught used to mean 'aw hell, now I've got to survive and make an escape so I can start sneaking up on them all over again', whereas now it's more like 'oh well I guess I'll just have to MURDER YOU ALL RIGHT NOW'.
Although I suppose if you're charging in sword 'n' board style, your goal probably isn't to backstab everyone in the dungeon. Point is: that last Sneak perk is totally worth it.
Smithing hasn't really been a thing on my sneaky cat. Up until I joined the Thieves' guild over the weekend I had been getting along just fine in Fur Armor. The aesthetics of the more advanced armors just don't mesh well with the kind of character I've been playing. Hell, they don't mesh well with anything other than a warrior archetype really. There was a point where I was seriously considering just going through with normal clothes because all the armors looked so awful for someone who was trying to not be seen.Server: Midgardsormr -> Quetzalcoatl -> Valefor

I'm mainly doing it for skillups in shield, armor, and one handed melee so I can lvl up and get my armoriing perks over and done with. I'm definitely getting that last Sneak perk though. I just want to be able to make the best gear in the game. I know... priorities, bleh.
I really didn't make myself anything to use until I was smithing lvl 100. Dragon scale armor is pretty damn sweet. I've been using the Thieves Guild pieces for a while now. Finished the Thieves Guild quests early on. Thing I don't really like about that armor though is that the guards comment about it constantly. The Thieves' Guild quest line is an absolute bundle of fun. I don't want to give too much away, but let's just say that it is head and shoulders above the college and Companion quest lines. It's refreshing to have objectives that requires more finesse than 'kill everything between you and the maguffin'. I guess some parts allow you to still play it that way, but making a clean getaway is half the fun.Server: Midgardsormr -> Quetzalcoatl -> Valefor

Responsible, married men who aren't living with their parents and are holding full time jobs are singing the praises of Skyrim. Who would I be to not get it myself? Gonna be going to Gamestop tomorrow to pick up a few things. Guess I'll make it one of the things to get.sigpic

Yeah... I was disappointed with the Mage school questline as well. I started the Companion questline early on but never got anywhere with it. Probably start in on that soon'ish. I'm still doing the mage school questline and I'm liking it so far. On another note, I just started enchanting, and WOW, you level up fast at first. I was enchanting items, and each enchantment I'd go up a level! How long does it stay like that? I'm level 31 enchanting now. Also, I felt like i got ripped off... I disenchanted an item and it said i learned the +5% cost less to cast destruction / +10% mana regen. I enchanted a ring, and it only gave me 1% cost less to cast destruction. I was like wtf?!?! Is it because I have no perks in enchanting? I need to have enchanting fully perked to get the full amount of what the enchanting says it would do? Also, do you gain xp when you enchant items? If so, that seems like a really easy way to level as long as you have the gil to support it...

Oh, lol, and another thing... I was in a dungeon on the mage school quest and I ran across some doors that were able to be picked but were master lock picking. I'm beginner or whatever, but i want to give it a shot. 10 picks later and nothing happening i gave up. I'm under the impression, as I'm sure most other RPG'ers are, that if its a master lock to pick, there's got to be some good shit behind that door and i want in! Soooo... I spent 2 perks on lockpicking to try and improve... For those that are well into the game, did i screw up? Is lockpicking not worth it retrospectively, and I shouldve spent it on something else I want to sepnd perks on? I'm a duel-wielding mage with light armor. I was looking to perk: destruction > restroration > enchanting > smithing > light armor > sneak. I'm currently level 16.75: Sam, Nin, Blm, Thf, Pld, Cor, Rdm

I'm not sure when the progression for Enchanting starts to diminish but you're a pretty long way from it. Still ... it remains pretty easy to skillup. Couple it with Smithing and you climb the levels pretty fast. Earn some pretty decent gold from selling your crap too. Unfortunately, if you progress too quickly without upping damage output trees you find that you're a craftsman on the battle-field... so you get murderized.
I put in some perks for lockpicking... I don't really think I should have at this point. I have my Lockpicking in the 80's or 90's maybe put got two perks. And you are able to pick master locks at early levels. But you'll probably eat through your picks rather fast from all the trial and error. Good thing they are so cheap. I only invested in lock picking enough to get the perk where people don't notice you picking the lock of their front door in broad daylight(definitely worth it for a thief). From previous run throughs I've been able to get by just fine with the improvements granted by gaining levels in lock picking, no perks required. Master locks usually gave me a bit of trouble on my warrior, but more often than not you're not missing out on any really sweet loot behind those locks. There might be a nice enchantment or armor piece, but those are easy enough to come by in so many other places throughout the game that it isn't a huge loss.
Some advice regarding perk placement: don't be afraid to hoard your perks. At any given time my characters will be sitting on two to six perks as I try to sort out what I actually need to progress in the game. It makes for a more organic feel, if that makes any sense. Basically I can keep plugging along until I encounter a situation in which a perk would be useful enough to warrant spending a point on it. It also helps you from making the mistake of investing in stuff that might not really suit you even though it looked shiny early on. For example, I was tempted early on to invest in Alchemy, but as I kept playing it became clear that I wasn't going to make much use of it, so I was glad I hadn't committed any perks to it.

I totally agree with your take on perks. At times I had 6 or so awaiting alotment as well. And yeah... I've opened master locks to find jack-sh!t nothing in the chest. Best thing I've gotten from opening Master Locks is the skillups. Which at this point I treasure more than dungeon crap. As to why I've bought lockpicks, well, I've not really ever gotten many off of corpses. 1-2 here and there off of a random bandit or sitting on a table just didn't cut it for me. I found myself running out of them during my Thieve's Guild quests... mainly cuz I'd open them master locks and easily go thru 20 picks trying to do it. Another reason is they are cheap as hell and don't weigh anything so I just started buying them up cuz I wasn't spending gold on much of anything. I don't buy them anymore... I have around 150+ now but early on, I would find myself midway through a dungeon and no picks... which really sucked.
