It pretty much has everything the MH-obsessed fan in Japan would love, just minus cat people.

Oh wait, Skyrim does have cat people. Kajit, not Feylines.

It must be a real headache to localize a game like this for multiple territories, though, with all that's in there.

Well yeah, it has the elements, but it's not Japanese fantasy. If they try to Final Fantasy it it will lose too much in the translation.

But then again as you all know I'm a sworn enemy of localizations, so if it was up to me I'd just add subtitles and use the time and money on adding more awesome content and actual dialog rather than on localizations.

Raydeus, I don't think I should have to point this out, but localization pertains to translation in general.

You're against dubbing, which is one facet of localization.

With so much going on in Skyrim and Radiant AI being what it is, they pretty much need the dub and there is a dub according the podcast. They have this sample of "Ragnar the Red" sung in multiple languages.

Of course, my peeve is with localization in general because of how many times the original content is completely altered by the time they are done with it.

With books and most of the text there isn't much to do about it because the majority of people wont speak the original language, I know that. But at least with spoken dialogue they have the option to add subtitles so they don't ruin the original material even more.

Again, I'd just hate seeing Tamriel becoming Alefgard or something due to localizations. Even if there isn't much to do about it.

Subtitles aren't helpful when one NPC is telling you something important and a guard has to come up and chip in his remark about sweet rolls.

You dislike of localization stems from a wish for cultural preservation, but with fiction it's not a desire many people share. It's censorship people really object to. Remember when the movie Pearl Harbor got softened up for Japan? Or when Passion of the Christ got a less violent English dub?

Note on the latter it wasn't the dub most people had a problem with. Sure the blood splatter was a tad overdone, but you can't really make a movie about the crucifixion and edit out all the violent details.

It really all comes down to cultural context. We want a story from Japan without an repeated education in the culture behind the creators. Hell I've seen people get ticked off with me for doing cultural analysis with FFXI. Some people want to see Bastok as just Bastok, not as early America with German architecture.

This is one thing that drives me nuts about subtitles, if there is not enough time for it to be on the screen to read than you just missed a lot of information. If it's a fansub or DVD you can at least rewind but if it's a game or you're watching something on TV without a DVR then you're shit out of luck This is the main reason why I refuse to watch dialogue heavy shows in anything but English.

That and the subtitles saying one thing but the character saying something different. Agarest was particularly notorious for this but there was plenty of fansubbed anime and games that also fall foul to the same thing.

And speaking of fansubs there's also the dreaded (Translator's Notes), where you have to pause the fucking thing to be able to read all of the info and put everything into context. Basically this says "I know what it really means but I'm too lazy to translate it into a sentence that makes sense in my language. So have some Gratuitous Japanese". Translator's notes also never note any cultural notes that may help the viewer, it's always there to translate some gratuitous use of Japanese for reasons that defy all logic.

Atlus manages the issue upfront by having a mini golossary in the manual for certain terminology and locations of importance. This makes it easier to understand how they relate while keeping games appropriate in an English context.

all translation is a fight between cultural preservation/accuracy in the source language and naturalness/entertainment in the target.

You can prefer different kinds, but ultimately neither one is really better. Frankly, if you care enough about cultural integrity to be opposed to dubs, you should just learn the goddamn language. On the other hand, if you're reading excessively long translation notes, I can pretty much guarantee you're watching fansubs instead of supporting the official release.

                    And going back to Skyrim I can't believe I haven't run out of places to bump into yet. o_O;

Pretty much any route I take is pretty much guaranteed to give me a dungeon/cave/ruin or two to explore. And I don't think I've even explored 1/3 of Skyrim. XD

Also got the Helm of Winterhold, thinking about keeping it for myself.

^ After seeing how many quests send me diving back into specific locations that I've already cleared (sometimes long enough after I've cleared them such that everything has respawned), the only thing I do now is "discover" locations, but I don't actually enter them until a quest actually sends me in. This has greatly improved my experience, as I'm no longer clearing the same location twice, and speeds up the rate at which I can clear quests.

Probably the biggest danger in walking into un-quested locations is accidentally picking up quest items that you don't have the quest for yet. Some of those items end up being permanently glitched such that you simply can't remove them from your inventory even after you receive and complete the quest. On PC, you can get around that by using the console to zap the item out of your inventory. On consoles, you're just permanently stuck with the item.

Whatever, Horsemurdrer. I don't care if there was a quest there, those Ice Mages had it coming.

                        Also, skill-ups.

So far I haven't bumped into any glitched quests, but I'll keep the console close to hand just in case. <_<

NAB. You weren't able to drop quest items in FNV, either, which is why most had their weight reduced.

Already happened to me. Picked up a few journals in a cave that apparently linked to some quest for the Thieves Guild. Now Vex won't take it from me and I'm stuck with writings from a necrophiliac.

                              Joy.
