Re: Dead Island brings lots of new fun fun crazy times?

how can people get tired of zombies survival horror/shooter games, mew? Over half of them aren't even worth playing, so rare quality zombie games like L4D and Dead Island are welcome.

The masses out there certainly aren't tired of military shooters, now that is something that is overdone in games.

zombies are just as popular as ninjas, pirates, aliens, etc.

Well, let's see how many games I can name just off the top of my head - no searching - that feature zombies released in the last few years...

            Plants vs. Zombies
            Left 4 Dead 1 & 2
            Resident Evil 4/5/Mercenaries/Umbrella Chronicles/etc.
Call of Duty : World at War / Black Ops
            Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
            Dead Block
            Dead Nation
            Burn Zombie Burn
Borderlands (one of the DLC expansions I can't recall offhand)
The House of the Dead: Overkill

And that's before we talk about the numerous miscellaneous sword and sorcery-type games like Dungeon Siege III which ALL have zombies of some sort as a standard enemy.

Man, if I had played all those games I'd be sick of zombies as well.

eww, who would waste time playing Plants vs Zombies? or CoD for the zombie mode? Haven't even heard of Dead Block. Dead Nation isn't good. Burn zombie burn also not worth playing. Borderlands has zombie DLC but really not a complete zombie game. House of the Dead is just rails shooter, they virtually have no replay value, mew. HotD series really is like Duck Hunt, was fun yesterday but not today.

so ya there's actually too few "good" zombie games on that list, so the bad ones don't really count, mew.

Plants Vs Zombies is pretty popular considering its on every platform I can think of and its one of if not the most popular tower defense game on the market. Turns out it sells well at $1 or $20 retail, too.

CoD - I don't have to explain this one, do I? While I have no love lost on Activision, they do have the sense to spruce up their zombie scenarios with celebrities and historical figures to keep it interesting.

Dead Block is a new PSN game where each hero character has different skills to prevent the zombies from overcoming the group on each level. The mechanic can board up doors and make freeze trap, the boy scout can maked toilet traps that spread disese between zombies and he can also scavange better. Oh, and zombies love rock and roll - a jukebox will get them dancing and the way you finish levels is finding an electric guitar and playing a solo so awesome it destroys the zombies.

Dead Nation is pretty much a spiritual successor to Smash TV. Not my thing, but I can see why people would like it for that reason.

I only dislike House of the Dead because Sega seems to disagree that headshots should be headshots. I can't completely decapitate a zombie.

As for RPGs, I don't really have a problem with zombies there as they're one of many stock enemies and not the majority. I can't exactly Elder Scrolls to send me to a crypt or or a Final Fantasy game to be complete without the walking dead being a factor at some point.

And I won't begrudge the lack of headshots being headshots in ES, because the best I get there is a bow and arrow and not a gun, but I can make a bow that sets them on fire.

                      -----

My problem with the zombie apocalypse scenario is, again, the scenario itself more than the zombies being in it. When you have Resident Evil, Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead filling the niche so well already or inventing new strains of undead to keep things interesting - its best to move on and come up with your own idea.

I have to wonder if George Romero even likes all this zombie stuff now.

Last time I really had fun with zombies was Zombieland and that's mostly because it felt like what a Dead Rising movie would be like. That and it had Bill Murray in it.

Dead Island's claim to being different is that its set on a tropical resort and it all happens in broad daylight. RE5 being in broad daylight for most of the experience was part of why it sucked so bad. At least RE4's daytime was heavily overcast and went directly into night in about two chapter. That and if nothing else scared you those damn regenerators would.

Re: Dead Island brings lots of new fun fun crazy times?

There is still plenty of room for more flavors of zombie madness, mew.

and Dead Rising is awful (well based on personal tastes, but yea, just because there's a lot of zombie games doesn't mean they appeal to everyone.)

Also Dead Island isn't just broad daylight, it gets darker as you get to later locations in story. And since it's more melee based and not as gun heavy as RE4 and RE5, it definitely stands out more than all of those with first person melee combat and stuff. And you can even throw weapons. While Dead Rising can do that, that is totally different gameplay, a.i. atmosphere and other stuff from Dead Island.

And also with 4 characters with their own classes and RPG system, this leads to something as innovative to the zombie theme like when Castlevania SOTN mixed RPG elements with action platforming!

Or Borderlands mixed group co-op, open world and shooters with RPG elements!

Also its more open world, more rare locations in a zombie scenario (how often we visit an island in that part of the world?), new characters and everything and stuff really makes it appealing and different, no matter what zombie games you played.

It's like comparing Battlefield and CoD with Rainbow Six, very different shooters.

or FFTactics, Tactics Ogre and Disgaea, which are different enough SRPGs.

or Ninja Gaiden, Tenchu, and NUNS2, which are very different ninja games.

Re: Dead Island brings lots of new fun fun crazy times?

, I might make room for this now. Well that and I watched some more videos of it and it does look solid over all, but it would be this or Operation Racoon City and I just can't fit that one into November/December at all.

But the real reasons I'd get this are the following:

                          (1) SE's western developments and the games that they new publish for western developers post-Kane and Lynch 2 are looking incredibly solid. I want to support that.

                          (2) Deep Silver is publishing Catherine and Persona 2 PSP for EU territories, gotta give them some love for giving Atlus some love.

                          (3) I don't have any system that could play Left 4 Dead

                          (4) Aliens Infestation got pushed back to October.

Funny I don't give a shit about Aliens Colonial Marines, but that's because I don't know if Gearbox is firing all cylinders based on DNF. WayForward has never disappointed me. There's also the Metroidvania angle, given Metroid drew inspiration from Alien its just interesting to me to see how Aliens would approach the series it inspired.

Re: Dead Island brings lots of new fun fun crazy times?

This game has had me interested ever since I watched footage and saw that it looked like Left 4 Dead and Borderlands had an apocalyptic baby.

I love zombie games, and RPGs, but it's the whole co-op aspect that I'm mainly interested in. I'm hoping that this game will have something that works similarly to Borderlands, as that worked out quite nicely.

The animations do seem a bit stiff, though. And I'm also concerned about things like the story and characters. As awesome as this game seems at times when I imagine it in my head with no flaws, there are a number of things that can go wrong with games of this nature, so I am not fully sold.

I need to read a couple more previews, and get a better idea of how the co-op will work before I can be truly sold, though.

I'm wondering what sort of bizarre universe you'd have to be in where sitting down at a workbench and putting together a makeshift weapon costs you money. Who are you paying? Casper the Ghost? Other than that, the game seems OK.

that is a little odd, but I guess they had to regulate the weapon building some how *shrugs*
