In the case of PAX East, the chainsaw was probably just a prop.

In the case of the ESRB, however, this would probably ring all too true.

      I must have this game.
      Right. Now.

This would fulfill my dream of being an epic-ly hot, blond, cheerleader who saves the day.

Re: Lollipop Chainsaw to be published by WB Interactive

I just like how Juliet, as a character, creates irrational reactions in various gamers.

The rage about the "sexist" promotion of the character, yet this is the most marketing Suda has ever seen for one of his game. I think its amazing Warner Bros. believes in this game and pushes it so hard. Capcom, EA and Ubi Soft never gave his games this enthusiastic kind of backing. NMH and Killer 7 were cult hits largely due to Nintendo's fanbase getting them as exclusives, but EA didn't even bother to inform the world about Shadows of the Damned when it was on 360 and PS3.

And gamers swore up and down back when NMH was out that they'd rush out and support Suda's games IF they came to 360 and PS3.

NMH on Wii - 210k sold in the US (lifetime), 10k in Japan (first week, no lifetime numbers).
No More Heroes on PS3/360 - 30k sold between US and UK, 16k in Japan.
Shadows of the Damned PS3/360k - 23k total between both systems, in all regions.

So PS3 and 360, given the chance, sold less than one-fourth of the Wii version even with the HD frosting they asked for.

People who complain about the marketing for this game can take a flying leap. I'd like Suda to have a fighting chance. Plus its not like Juliet Starling isn't the first extreme stereotype he's had for a leading character, its actually part of the charm of his games.

        - Travis Touchdown - Otaku loser that becomes the greatest assassin... all in an attempt to just get laid by a hot Scandinavian chick. Oh, and for revenge. That, too. Uses a beam katana that must be recharged by shaking it.

        - Garcia Hotspur - Macho Mexican badass, passionate about his woman and makes a lot of dick jokes. Has a demon partner named Johnson, who turns into guns with really long barrels. Wears a purple leather jacket.

        - Juliet Starling - Perky cheerleader and zombie Slayer, with a decapitated head for a boyfriend. She loves him and wants to make babies with him. Her weapons of choice or pom-poms, chainsaws and her boyfriend's head.

Peas in a pod, if you ask me. And their Japanese creator seems to think they fit in America. Given his love for the history of American film and Japanese games, it strangely does work out. Its also impressive how he layers in all the references. The guy is on Kojima's level in that respect.

People are angry about this game's protagonist being too sexed up? Did people rage over Bayonetta too?

I've actually seen people defend it as "clever" since she wears her hair as clothing - you know even thoguh during her most powerful attacks all that comes loose and she's mostly naked. Seems tou can't stay mad at female protagonists forever, so they just get mad initially before they can realize there's a bit more to the character or game than a pair of breasts. Unless its DOA, anyway, then it is a pair of breasts.

Change a male character's appearance and you're hated forever, though. You know, like when their hair is turned black or they're redrawn to have green eyes and longer legs.

I still maintain that DMC2 doesn't exist. There's DMC, SMT: Nocturne and then DMC 3.

Re: Lollipop Chainsaw to be published by WB Interactive

From Gabe on Penny Acade last Monday:

Jessica Nigri(NSFW) is the other “controversy”. I find this one to be super funny actually. Jessica was dressed up to promote the game Lollipop Chainsaw. We had received some complaints and decided that yeah her costume was a bit too revealing for the show floor. The game was being shown inside a bus and so we asked that if she wants to keep the costume on, please stay inside with the game or if you want to be out on the floor please cover up a bit more. Now let me tell you why I find this to be fucking hilarious.

Last year we were given all kinds of shit for the Duke Nukem booth babes. How could we allow women to be used as sex symbols just to sell a game? How could we allow them on the show floor in their school girl outfits while children and families were walking around? We were vilified for not kicking them off the show floor on the very first day. Now, exactly one year later I am also a monster, but now it’s because I am “punishing women” by asking them to cover up. I’ve been asked why I find the female body to be “obscene” and told that I must really hate women.

Hopefully you can see now why I find this so fucking ridiculous.

How about all of you that hate me get together and have your own conference. I need you to decide if half naked girls are empowered or exploited because I’m doing my fucking best here and it’s apparently always wrong. I swear to God I don’t understand how I’m supposed to know if I’m promoting the patriarchy or criminalizing the female body.

The best part is that Jessica, Warner Bros and everyone at PA is cool. This was a non issue. It is apparently only a big deal to people who didn’t even attend the show.

So that’s my response to our two completely fabricated “scandals” this year. I have to admit I’m surprised that these made it to the blogs but my killing and eating of a PAX attendee got no press.

                    -Gabe out
I think the key problem here is a man doesn't get to decided what's "empowering" or "degrading" for someone that's (1) a woman that enjoys flaunting it and (2) is cosplaying a parody of the cheerleader stereotype. The reason its "not a big deal" for Warner Bros here is because they want to be able to be at the show next year and its publicly known the PA guys decide who stays and who goes. Meanwhile, there are other half-naked cosplayers walking around that get to stay and Gabe can talk about dickwolves? Oooookay.

This chick was in tears over this, as others from the show walked her back to the hotel. Holmes from Destructoid watched the whole thing go down and gave his side on Podtoid while Gabe was taking his frustrations out on him by way of Twitter. Nigri only put on the brave face for the same reason WB did - so she could come back next year, she honestly wasn't cool with it.

What's hysterical is Gabe ritually overreacts about everything. Just paragraphs before this he was bragging and justifying the prank he pulled on Paul Christoforo (that Ocean Marketing guy) well after they pretty much destroyed his career. At the time of that, Paul was indeed a bully, but now Gabe thinks its OK for him to be the bully now.

Its just sad to see someone my age that still hasn't gotten past being the mocked nerd from high school. He's the One Angry Dwarf that remembers every slight against him in his younger days.

I still like PA and all, but damn. Get over yourselves, guys.

Christoforo was unprofessional as fuck. He ruined his own career. Not sure how you categorize them giving the issue coverage a prank. It's not like they fabricated the whole thing.

It's impossible to please everyone all of the time, so do what you think is right and don't act like a self-righteous prick about it. I don't think Gabe was all that wrong in this case or the Christoforo one, but his comments on the aftermath of each fall into self-righteous prick territory, imo.

I think that reaction is exactly what each of us would have experienced in his shoes.

People complain about sexy booth babes and call him a terrible person for having sexy booth babes.
He gets rid of a sexy booth babe, people call him a terrible person for hating on sexy booth babes.
You can't fucking win, so of course you're going to be bitter and resentful about the whole thing. That's completely normal and I would expect anyone to react in that exact manner given the circumstances.

Only if you take yourself way too seriously.

He already knows (or at least should already know) you can't please everyone, so he has to wear his grown up pants, make a decision and deal with it. After all he wasn't making a single ending for an open ended game and changing colors to try to fool the "fans" while he inserted some DLC charges on their behinds, he was just making a decision whether the girls should be there or not.

TL;DR He can cry a river about it, all he is accomplishing is making himself look like the whiny kid throwing a tantrum.

The problem is the lack of consistency.

Scantly clad booth babe = Bad
                              Scantly clad cosplayer = OK.

This is the reason he can't win. He's making an incredibly weak distinction.

As for Christoforno - his career was already destroyed thanks to PA, they didn't need to do more damage than he already did to himself. He's still stupid, but its time for him to figure out why he fails not have people kick him while he's down.

Sure, but the booth babe is a fixture in the convention though, it's definitely going to be noticed and get coverage. A cosplayer is less likely to get singled out if you ask me.
