  • Blizzard legitmizes gold farming for Diablo 3

Blizzard is bringing real-money auctions to Diablo III -Destructoid

So, anyone want to still argue that Blizzard is a merely a good developer owned by Activision, cuz I can smell Bobby's hand in this.

Meanwhile the Bilzzard hardcore were all like LALALALALAICANTHEARYOULALALALALA to the inevitable backlash.

I don't have an issue with it, myself. They've taken the power out of the hands of the people illegally profiting from their game and are giving it to the entire player-base. Yes, they'll be making money from your work, but I doubt they'll take a cut larger than what you're earning, yourself, and it'll most likely go to operating costs, since the game wont charge a monthly fee.

I hate Activision as much as anyone, but this doesn't actually strike me as being all that bad. You are never forced to buy something, and they're right that people are going to do it anyway, so they might as well make sure such exchanges are regulated and fair.

This is all going to blow up in their face if someone finds a duping exploit, however, so I hope they know what they're doing.

The problem would be paying your way through an online only game (WTF at that, BTW) that has a PVP side.

Saying its optional doesn't mean anything - it will affect everyone who plays and the balance of the game as a whole. Those that can swipe the credt card the most win PVP, its as simple as that. No skill or effort required.

It may make sense to roust the RMT and just take control of that unfortunate aspect directly, but I feel it sets a very bad precedent for gaming as a whole.

Really? Does this credit card swiper come with the game? Do I need to pay extra for it? How many colors are available??? CAN I BUY IT WITH REAL WORLD MONEY OR DO I HAVE TO TRADE ITEMS FOR IT???

              Don't be so dramatic.

Can't people already do this? Also, as opposed to what, the person that can grind the most winning? I don't think PvP should be taken too seriously in any game where players don't have equal access to equipment and stats.

Either way the situation will remain lose/lose. Do nothing, gold farmers keep doing their shit. Legitimize real money spending, you become the bad guy. This thread will probably run a couple of pages and no one will reach a middle ground.

There is no middle ground. There is only lose/lose.

The truth is they learned from WoW that banning people was a time consuming and wasteful venture, so they're just not going not going to bother with it for D3.

Perhaps its for the best that we let P2P RPGs and MMORPGs die as a whole. The model seems considerably less successful for other forms of online multiplayer gaming.

This. If you want balanced PVP, don't play PvP in an RPG with randomized and wildly-different equipment. It's that simple. If people are idiots enough to ignore this and want to pay their way to (slightly) better gear, then so be it.

Note: Same thing already happens in D2 PvP, so what's the difference?

Besides, there's more to PvP than just gear. Game rules and player skill have a lot more impact on PvP than individual gear ever did in D2.

It's weird how I probably hate Activision more than anyone else on this forum, but am probably the least offended by this "feature".

Except that it's Diablo. An action RPG, not an MMO.

There is no economy to speak of, so the only damage this actually does to the game is some people will get ahead better/have better stuff for PvP - Big Fucking Deal.

If it was for WoW, that'd be another thing entirely.

I reflexively want to be offended by this, but I found the arguments of the "meh" contingent convincing.
