THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY | SQUARE ENIX

So this is SE's first real 3DS project (we're not counting Bust-A-Move).

There's not much to see there yet, but there a nice spin on the Prelude theme to listen to. As you may have guess from the name of the game, this is a Final Fantasy rhythm game and it seems to be favoring that weird-but-cute art style used for player avatars in Kingdom Hearts Coded.

It also seems Cosmos and Chaos of Dissidia Final Fantasy will be involved.

Makes sense - Goddess of Harmony and a God of Discord.

Here's hoping for a nice music selection from every game.

I like the take on the Prelude theme.

Why oh why do I get the feeling this is going to bust in Japan and never make it stateside?

Looking at the story and background info on the game, dear god I hope they change it for the US release. This just looks like it's made of bubbly and what-the-fuck, and that's coming from someone who has been inside a Rillakuma shop in the recent past.

I mean, I love a good music-based game, but then there are far too many people out there making "press the button when this thing hits this line!" games (no matter how they try to cover it up by changing the icons or not having the line in a stable position, COUGH COUGH WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU'RE CALLED VOCALOID GAME COUGH COUGH). There's some cool stuff to be done there, like ReflecBeat, which is pretty much a combination of a traditional rhythm game, air hockey, and cocaine. But generally, it's just been totally exhausted by DDR, Bemani, Pop'n, Guitar Freaks, Drum Mania, and the games based on those (Rock Band et. al)

The genre needs more creativity to really shine-- more Rez, more Bit.Trip, more bit generations, more Every Extend. So many developers out there just cashing in.

And quite honestly, I have little doubt that's what SE is doing. That prelude remix isn't terrible, but OCRemix outpaced it years ago.

mmmm interesting, I would by it, part of the reason I love Final Fantasy, is because of the music

Its SE, so I'm fairly sure there's an RPG in there someplace.

Re: Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy site opens

BBQ, the fucking music arcade games in Japan are RPGs. I had a friend play Pop'n more because "it's fun to build up stats because you unlock new stuff and you can build a town" than because they actually enjoyed the gameplay. Goddamn near every machine I touched in that country tracked your stats, had a little bar fill up, let you unlock new shit. I am like Level 33 DDR. Doesn't mean jack shit about how good I am, just the game keeping track of how much I've played it and flashing and looking cool.

I'm sure there will be an RPG element to it, but that doesn't mean the fundamental gameplay is going to be creative. You can put any type of gameplay you want within an RPG framework; action, shooter, puzzle (including tetris-clones), rhythm; but often times putting those within the RPG is a substitute for actually making a game that would have engaging replay value otherwise.

Re: Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy site opens

Feba, you're forgetting one critical thing here:

America and Europe are not Japan. Arcades are dead here and the music genre doesn't have arcade representation outside of DDR in the few active arcades we have left. That and Activision callously put the majority of the genre down just after releasing new Guitar and DJ Hero games during the holiday.

For that, the genre - especially parts of it that require a fake instrument - are considered not worthy of a gamers time when they see how its been abandoned.

SE could release this game in the US and Europe and look original, really. We think Rhythm Heaven is wholly original in the US.

SE is also no longer in a position to play favorites with territories. They're giving up press exclusives faster than ever on FFXIII-2 to the west and paying down big to hype Deus Ex and Dead Island. If there's something gamers here want, they'd better strongly consider releasing it as fast as they can.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy getting paid DLC -Destructoid

                  Some interesting/curious news.

I'm pretty confident with the game like this that SE wouldn't short you on content anyway, but it does seem there will be music packs sold as DLC for this 3DS game. Dissidia Duodecim on PSP actually did this as well, so I can't say I'm too surprised. Theatrhythm was looking to have a pretty extensive selection of music as it stands, so I'd actually welcome the ability to add selections from games like FFVIII and FFXI down the road or even FFX-2 and XIII-2 if they had options for that.

The other interesting note in this story is the "Nintendo Network" logo, which seems to hint a new online initiative for Nintendo. What for it will take and what features this would have remain to be seen, but DLC seems to be one of the things and the next Fire Emblem game is also going to have DLC.

Re: Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy site opens

This is, hands-down, my most anticipated game this year. I am a huge fan of Final Fantasy music and a Final Fantasy music game is just about the best possible thing I could ever concieve of.

Still, I acknowledge it's kinda a niche audience. So while I'm jizzing all over it, I fully expect the general public to go 'meh,' and rightfully so.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Song Coming To Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy As DLC | Siliconera

                          Well that's a relief.

We don't know yet when this game will come out, if ever, but we'll have the theme song as DLC for a 3DS game.

I'm not ranting about there being DLC, either, as a music game tends to lend to this sort of thing and there's so many FF songs out there i doubt they could get all that CG and music on one 3DS cart anyway. I think the retail release has 50 or 60 songs already, which is a ton.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy preorder gets you this stylus -Destructoid

I think this is the third time SE has done stickers as a pre-order bonus for a handheld game. Still. a stylus with a grip is nice.

Especially when it can be a Shantotto stylus.
