Re: The Old Republic videos and misc info

just as a footnote to BBQ, EVE online operates exclusively as a subscriber system; just with the caveat that you can pay for your subscription using in-game currency.

And that pilot's license was paid (at an slightly increased price) by someone else.

Although the dumbasses at CCP fell on their own trap and starting thinking the money from PLEX was an extra income, when all it was was merely a subscription insurance.

And then the 80 USD NEXT monocles happened.

Now, now, no need to get so upset about it. I never claimed to have played the game and never commented anything about the gameplay, it was graphics onry which I dislike as much as I dislike WoW's.

And I said it myself, I'm not playing so it's not a big deal. Is it saddening due to the false hopes I had after playing KotOR? Yes of course, and that was the whole point of my post. You just took my comment and ran for the hills with it.

Because apparently you can't have an opinion about a game's graphics unless you play it.

Because you're only seeing the graphics at face value. Where's that post on this forum about aesthetics (which, personally, I think aesthetics are something you need to experience for yourself) versus graphics? Apparently you missed it.

It's like me saying the Lord of the Rings movies are boring, yet I never saw any of them, except bits and pieces here and there. (Real example. Minus the fact I say they are boring. I just have no opinion... because I never sat down and saw them.)

I don't like the aesthetics nor the graphics, that's the whole point. I can only see the graphics at face value because they are... graphics.

Now, if you are implying that in the context of that setting the fugly art should somehow become appropriate...I just don't buy it.

This isn't Okami nor Katamari. TOR's setting was established a long time ago so this game's "style" conflicts greatly with my expectations. So... I guess you can say it is precisely because of the context that I find the graphics more offensive than I normally would.

          But again, it's not a big deal. <_<;

Graphics implies a quality to it, such as the level of detail in texture resolution and polygonal count, as well as the shaders that make it sparkle as it were. For an MMO, the graphics are really good. You can't deny that.

The aesthetics and style is what you're talking about. I personally think it's fine, and is unique, and will age really well considering MMO's stay alive for so many years. I don't find it goofy, and I don't find it conflicting with anything else within the Star Wars universe. But each to their own.

WoW: More flighty and vivid colors that melt into each other.
SWTOR: Raw, hard, and mechanical colors with a dash of neon lighting.

Seven years of progress - Imgur (and yes I'm aware the image is mocking how The Fleet has an Ironforge look.)

Played since that stress test took place over Thanksgiving and the game is decent. Some game design and coding flaws that most aren't too worried about right now, since it's launch and they were generally anticipated by those who are use to MMOs just starting out. Game is fun and casual enough that I don't feel the need to have to be logged in and playing all the time. Love my Gunslinger to death.
That screen reminds me of Ulduar and the UI reminds me of custom generated ones that you fine littered all over the internet.

Not the best example, but something I found dating to that time period ... maybe I'll find something else.

Re: The Old Republic videos and misc info

I liked the game for a bit, but after a week and a half, I'm bored to tears. It's not that I don't like the game, but it just feels so boring! Grind quests that involve sitting through 10 minutes of dialogue each (which is alright until you realize that you just burned 3 hours doing 2 quests lines that gave 20% of your level at 25.)

The graphical style is fine for the game, and I really don't have any gripes about anything visually. I've just done this before, and it was more fun with axes, guns, and giant tigers than it was with a Light Saber and a Dashade.

Re: The Old Republic videos and misc info

So I got the game for Christmas, and I finally was able to log in last night. I believe I hopped on the Throne of the Exalted (?) RP server. I've enjoyed what I've played so far. I kind of wish I could move some UI elements around, but I do like the aesthetic of it. Graphically, I definitely feel like videos and screenshots don't do it justice. I like how the environments look so far, though I do feel like some of the texture work on armor I've seen could be worked on.

My biggest complaint so far is for character customization. I would like a little more freedom in the size/shape of my character (also the size of the male chest, it can poke out a bit much XD) as opposed to the 4 preset sizes. Some of the hairstyles leave much to be desired, and I wish there were more long hair options. I feel like it's kind of on the lower spectrum for customization from some MMOs I've played, but it isn't a deal breaker by any means.

All in all I'm enjoying the heck out of playing the game so far, and look forward to trying out more classes soon. :3

But if I skip the cutscenes, what else does the game have to offer?

Stylized graphics are fine, and I don't really have any complains about the graphics in TOR since they work for what the game is. The game just feels dead and boring to me.

I understand it's not for everyone, so I'll leave the game to the people who actually like it. Everything for me is just used for waiting until Archeage is released anyways.

You dare question the king of western RPGs?

You know, the more I play of these "Go here and kill/collect X amount of this" soloist MMOs, the more I think that EQ, Lineage, Ultima and FFXI were on to something with "forced grouping." At least they weren't trying to hide the grind with padding and flavor text.

Many of these MMO titles are pressured to release with just the core portion of the game intact but with very little variety in play. Maybe the shareholders are ansy about their returns or management want to see something other than "deferred costs for the next fiscal year" for the 3rd straight fiscal year. /shrug

It was the same with Rift, with FFXIV, and so forth and I don't think this is a trend likely to change anytime soon. It's kind of like when a title relies on DLC releases as some crutch to take the pressure off the development schedule. Most people see the initial package they purchased and think, "wtf?" and are probably unlikely to stick around long enough before stuff gets a lot better.
