Square Enix To Announce New MMO Title This Year

During an earnings briefing on May 13, translated by Andriasang, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada made mention of the company's plans to run at least one more MMO title in addition to Final Fantasy XIV. These plans come with the hope that the games will provide the company with a stable cash flow.

This new MMO is already in development, and Wada teases an announcement is on the horizon some time this fiscal year.

According to Andriasang, Wada also comments on Final Fantasy XIV, which has seen prolonged post-launch troubles, saying that while the game will require more time, the company is finally "at the point where they can see the target."

Anyone heard about this?

Doesn't mean the game will even reach the states. Their first non-Final Fantasy MMO title crashed and burned in Japan. It only recently made it to the US because of Gamepot. I don't expect this MMO to reach the US and make a big splash, either.

I'd hope they'd learned from both FFXI and FFXIV at this point and that they actually listen to people who play their Beta.

Wakfu isn't developed by SE, just published. I'm not saying it's not Wakfu, just that if it is, they're not losing a lot of money there.

I think the MMO will be high quality and really deep MMORPG (it has to be. A 2nd rate mmorpg or ORPG won't cut it.)

I think the new SE mmorpg will be:

Seiken Densetsu/Mana MMORPG

KH MMORPG

Chrono MMORPG

The Bouncer MMORPG

Dragon Quest MMORPG

Bushido Blade MMORPG

Star Ocean MMORPG

I think they closed the servers to FMO long ago.

I think if SE seriously wants to make money off of this new MMO, it has to be based on a major franchise like Chrono, Dragon Quest or KH.

And it would have to have content, gameplay, story and depth that rivals FFXI and graphics that rival FFXIV, mew. And of course released on PS3 also.

The only ones that really could be made into an MMORPG would be Mana or DQ, the others would not transfer very well. Also I dought Disney would let SE make a KH MMORPG.

why not? They have been flexible with KH projects thus far, and if it makes lots of popularity and money, they wouldn't complain.


Well yes the only thing going for KHs are keyblades, but just like Star Wars mmorpgs have introduced classes besides Lightsaber users, KH could maybe present something similiar to a cross between Organization XIII different weapon users and keyblade users.

Plus maybe they could revamp the magic system into different classes. and maybe provide different races for character creation to further deepen the diversity? and maybe customizable keyblades that can be turned into different weapon classes or something.

Well not sure how creative SE would be with a KH mmorpg, but ya, Mana and Dragon Quest seem like safer mmorpg projects that would adapt better in the mmorpg genre and have a broader scope with various details in all categories and stuff.


I would choose a 3-D Mana mmorpg over a DQ mmorpg. Mana can stand out more and has countless more creative possibilities, including races, locations, beautiful artistic enviornments, unique inhabitants and architectures, lore, and much more, mew! It has more fantasy than a final fantasy does!

Dragon Quest universe is generic compared to Mana. might as well play WKC2.

but um um an original IP for an MMORPG is super risky,

it would get mixed in with all the other swords and sorcery mmorpgs out there, mew.

Well ya SE might not be clever enough to design a high quality DQ mmorpg or Mana mmorpg or Chrono mmorpg or KH mmorpg, but those brand names alone would instantly gather millions of interest (especially if XI-XIV graphics and mmorpg standards are included.)

considering their financial situations, they have to really cater to the fans and use a popular franchise as its foundation.



hmm, on that note, maybe it's Final Fantasy VII-2 Online ?
