Re: Mega Man Legends 3 Prototype coming to 3DS' eShop

I have to agree, I just did not even by a PS2 till something came out I wanted to really play, took about a year. I was enjoying N64/PSX/DC and a few seasons of PSO as well ;p

I don't know that pointing at past history is a good prognosticator here. When the DS/PSP/PS2/PS3/whatever launched, there weren't things like smartphones and slate tablets and netbooks to complicate the picture. If you wanted to play a video game, a home or handheld console was basically your only choice. Now, you've got a lot of platforms you can choose to game on in the portable space. Netbooks, Android phones, iPhones, iPads, etc.

That doesn't mean Nintendo can't dig the 3DS out of its slump, but it does mean they have to work a LOT harder today than they would have in the past, because people have a lot more options, particularly in that price range. I think the PS Vita is going to run into the same headwind when it releases next year as well, and Sony faces a similar challenge in finding a message that will resonate with consumers.

Technically this doesn't directly impact the software that may become available, but you'd have to be pretty naive to think that developers and publishers aren't taking a good hard look at the market landscape out there to determine if there's enough of an install base for them to produce and market something that will be profitable.

        Couldn't care less atm about 3DS's line-up.

I fucking want my conclusion to MML, and now I'm never going to get it. Been waiting over a decade now to see how it all ends and Capcom pulls this shit.

At least when Blizzard did it, we got the most epic sequel ever. I'm just done with Capcom, I've had it up to here with their lackluster bullshit. They're as bad or worse than Activision now, as at least Activision puts out shit that sells well and is mostly fun (I actually do still like CoD 4 and I'd like to see MW3 do well, if they could just get rid of Kotick and his god awful attitude...)

        - Mikami, Kamiya & Inafune left
        - Mega Man has been milked to death in increasingly worse spin-offs
        - New Dante sucks dick for coke, don't care for the music or the style or anything about the new DMC really.
        - Outrageous DLC & Witholding content that's ON THE BLOODY DISC on purpose
        - Resident Evil is just a zombie arcade shooter now.

Oh yeah and don't forget about that new Ace Attorney that also got canceled. It's like Street Fighter is the only thing they have left that they haven't totally screwed up (aside from $5 per character/costume DLC which is nuts) but that's not enough to keep me interested. Asura's Wrath does like sort of cool, but apparently it's nothing but QTE's - literally, the whole fucking game is quick-time events. WTF Capcom... Actually there's also that western RPG thing they have coming, but I'm just so damn disgusted with the company I just don't give a shit at this point.

Not to mention Breath of Fire seems to have died off. And I'm not a big fan of Street Fighter IV and especially MvC3. Mega Man is all Capcom had left to offer me.

I wouldn't be so irate if they had at least released the Prototype Version before calling it quits. At least then I could rationalize "Well, they tried, not enough people bought it, life sucks." But this? The only thing that's helped me get through this is someone posting this in the comments over at Joystiq.

You're seriously comparing a market that set to crash like the Atari/Intellivision/Colecovision-era to the market Nintendo, Sony, MS and Valve participate in?

the iOS market is out-of-control in the same way the first generation of game consoles were - no IP protection, no proper licensing, outright theft and piracy in every corner. Apple's market is going to destroy itself. It may entice the some head execs from EA or other publishers away, but I think that market is in for a rude awakening. It will have to conform to what the rest of the industry does at some point. Its not going to stay like it is now.

I don't care how it happens, but I'm hoping someone big enough to sue the shit out of Apple for letting IPs get stolen becomes involved. Could be one of their home-grown success storeis, could be Nintendo with their forthcoming Pokemon iOS app. Something will happen to either crash or scare regulation into the iOS market.

I certainly think tablets have a strong place in the future, but right now I don't consider them a serious gaming device. No analog sticks, no d-pads or proper buttons (or keyboard). Touch controls are great when used well, but they are not a full replacement for those things. Sony, Nintendo, MS and Valve know it.

              --------------------------------

All that aside, the MML3: Prototype wiki page has been torn to pieces by angry fans. Good job, Capcom.

Apple's AppStore is as draconian as it gets, but the whole "Wild West" environment is what has let it expand as rapidly as it has.

You might be right about some sort of Napster-like apocalypse happening to it at some point, but I don't think the conditions are there for it (yet).

You and I certainly don't consider tablets and phones to be great gaming devices, but there are a lot of people out there who are just happy enough playing Angry Birds in spare moments. This segment of the market (who were the soccer moms who bought the GameBoy for Tetris) is now basically gone for the dedicated gaming handhelds, because they're not looking for the same sorts of games you or I are.

I'm just pointing out the differences between the situation where you could convince that 40-year old mother of two to buy a GameBoy versus getting that same 40-year old mother today to buy a 3DS. It's a different environment out there now, and I think both Nintendo and Sony would be well served to recognize that and change their marketing message to acknowledge it.

                  I forgot about BoF...

So now all they have left is Street Fighter & Monster Hunter. Real good Capcom, you fuck wits. Oh how I would love to see a mass-boycotting because they absolutely deserve it right now. When your top 3 guys who basically established you as a powerhouse all leave in disgust, it really says something.

There are still a couple of games from them I'm interested in, but it's on a rental-only basis now. I do still want to try Racoon City for example, but there's just no way I'll ever buy anything from them with the possible exception of the Mega Man Zero collection which A) Came out a while ago and B) Is one of the last few good things they actually put out.

Oh and don't forget that Lost Planet 2 sucked ass >_> (That was Inafune's though wasn't it?)

I think Nintendo and Sony's shift to a level of sophistication iOS devices can't touch essentially says that already, they veered right back to the hardcore market (hate that term, but oh well, we're talking marketing anyway) in the design of 3DS and Vita, but left the door open to leech iOS games.

The problem is the hardcore gamer sees handheld gaming as an aside when its more often been its own thing or a compliment at most to the console market. Then you have the J9 types that convince themselves handhelds can't deliver the kinds of games we enjoy on consoles now, even though their nipping right at the heels of current gen.

You look at something like RE:Revelations and Uncharted for Vita and its not that far off.

Consoles, handhelds and PC rigs will go the way of the arcades, I have no doubt of that - but I do doubt Apple will remain a dominant force as they're starting to become rather complacent in their position. The second someone creates a tablet that can compete in price with iPad or even have a lower price point Apple will be in trouble because they love being expensive.

So the Ultimate MvC3 characters have been leaked already. Capcom put in Firebrand over Mega Man. Also read there's a new Legends-themed stage.

                      Very classy, Capcom.

Probably making him a DLC pre-order bonus or something, I'd imagine. There will be something to that effect there, they're just trying to get fans in a tizzy over it, I think.

All in all, I think we can all agree that Mega Man is pretty much over as a franchise.

MM9 sparked a little revival, but MM10 didn't sell as well. The DS Network games were dragged on past where they peaked on GBA, none sold well. Mega Man ZX Advent didn't sell well. Mega Man Zero Collection - nobody seems ot know it even happened. I sold a few on singing its praises, but I'm only one guy.

I don't think the sales of the 3DS are to blame, I don't think Inafune's departure is to blame - the truth just is they ran this series into the ground and nobody but the hardest of the hardcore fan can be made to care.

Capcom pushed Mega Man to a point even Nintendo and Sega wouldn't dare bring Mario or Sonic and oversaturation killed the brand as a whole - there's just no getting round that. There eventually were so many offshoots and side games I couldn't be bothered to keep up. So I just stopped caring.

If Mega Man appears in anything again, consider it his send-off.

It was never treated like a long running series, but it doesn't stop it from being a fan favorite.

Its legacy hasn't been ruined or run into the ground at any rate.

But even after being spammed to all hell, Mega Man and Mega Man X are still fan-favorites even for people who don't keep up with the games any more. I'd wager there's still way more Mega Man fans than Ghouls and Ghosts fans.

Unless this is really all an elaborate scheme to get us pissed off at them only to include him as DLC at the last minute, there's just no way to justify Firebrand over Mega Man - especially after he topped the charts for most wanted DLC. Hell, let's not forget Mega Man was also one of the most demanded 3rd party characters for Brawl. Hell, even if they had no intentions of bringing back Mega Man they could've brought back Jin or Captain Commando. After all, they brought back Strider.

But I wouldn't give Capcom that much credit. They included Rocket Raccoon over Gambit or Cyclops. I don't know a single person that gives a fuck about Rocket Raccoon.

I think it also boils down to licensing. Technically, Capcom does not own Strider anyway, but they were able to get the license for him for him to appear in this game.

Americans associate Strider with Capcom, Japan associates Strider with a manga.

You mention Smash Bros and it could be a factor. Nintendo could have very well paid Capcom for Mega Man in the next Smash Bros. game.

You also have to keep in mind Capcom wants to keep particular characters fresh and much of MVC3's roster had new faces to start with. I believe Jin last appeared on Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom and certain characters that could have very well been in SSFIV AE have actually been saved for Street Fighter X Tekken.

Even though they'll put Ryu in any of them, but then, he's an all-arounder. I was a little annoyed that Elena wasn't in AE, but when I think about it, she'd make much more sense in SFXT alongside Eddie Goro or Christie.

Still doesn't justify two more shotos in Evil Ryu and Oni.

I'm just glad Phoenix and Frank are in, though Phoenix's presence now begs for Miles Edgeworth to be included.
