  • So Dissidia 2 Bricked my PSP...

Anyone had a similar problem and/or knows where to get a new PSP for cheap in the UK?

Pisses me off so much since I got this PSP on the day of release and haven't had a problem with it until now. I don't know if it was the firmware update or the install data or both but I can't exactly check since my computer and PS3 both see the data as fine if I inset the memory stick to check the data.

    So yeah...Any suggestions?

I was under the impression a Pandora Battery could unbrick PSPs. It would probably be much cheaper to start with that than to buy a new one. Example: click here. I'm fairly sure that the ones that say they're for PSP-1000s will work on later models, you just won't be able to put on the battery lid since it's thicker. But they come in PSP-2000/3000 sizes too. A typical Pandora Battery can't be used as a regular battery so I suppose it doesn't matter whether it fits or not, but I've seen some that can serve as a normal battery if you push a button or something.

You know, up until this thread was created, I have never heard of any portable Nintendo device being bricked (that has the ability to be updated in this manner). Is this just PSP specific or is it the nature of the technology? In any event, I'd take it to a Sony dealer and have them replace or fix regardless of warranty seeing that they caused it to go bad.

Pft, they wouldn't give a shit. Anything can brick if something goes wrong during an update. It is pretty much the nature of the technology.

I second the Pandora Battery. That thing is wonderful.

The only bricking I'm aware of (due to my limited interaction with other mobile devices) are with smart phones and users trying to unlock and then installing their own custom ROMs. What happens usually is that they get themselves into trouble and are technically challenged to get out of it on their own. I think majority of "bricking" are resolvable but most people finding themselves into that situation opt to not find a more technically skilled person because (a) they fear being mocked or made fun of (pride) or (b) don't want to go to the dealer and get caught violating TOS.

Beyond that, it's literally a crapshoot of a 1 in 100,000 devices will end up being screwed over by something that borders on "Acts of God" if it really is not a situation initiated by the user. What I want to know is how often does it happen to PSP users. Because if it happens more often (i.e., 1 in 500 devices or higher ratio) than it deserves much more media scrutiny.

How exactly is it bricked? Doesn't turn on?

You forgot the part about where they Sony customer service rep would try to making it sound like it was your fault somehow.

That's one thing that's always bugged me about Sony - I call Nintendo or MS and they'll do backflips to make me happy, but Sony just finds anyway to make sure it was your fault somehow. Hell, even if someone at Nintendo tells me they "can't" do something, chances are if I call back next time I'll find someone that will.

There is a shop about 2 miles from where I live that sells all sorts of illegal mobile phone modifications as well as things like R4s, mod chips and Pandora Batteries. I got one and it does work though since it's not a regular battery, my PSP seems to be on life support at the moment. I got it to finally boot and play Dissidia though I can't actually do a thing with it unless it's plugged in using the AC adaptor and only the AC adaptor. The USB cable, for whatever reason doesn't seem to work.

Never call Microsoft or Nintendo in Europe. I've had 3 Xbox 360's bricked by compulsory firmware updates and two times they refused to repair the machine and actually tried to charge me for the repairs for a third when they said they would do it for free when I sent back the third 360. Microsoft DO jump through hoops if you call up them and hit the number for cancelling your account though....Well right up until they realise they can get more money from you. Then they tell you to bend over.

As for Nintendo, I have yet to get through to the department I need. It's usually a process of being ping-ponged from department to department before some French rep tells me to consult the website and hangs up. They're probably the least helpful since at least Microsoft and Sony do help somewhat.

Sony in Europe aren't too bad, I've not had a bad experience with them yet though while getting through their customer service stuff, it is entirely possible to end up accidentally calling the customer services for their computers due to it the number being very similar to the contact number for the Playstation branch. The advice they give is rarely useful or anything you don't already know, but at least it's an effort unlike Nintendo.

It does baffle me how different these companies go by region at times - you'd think the corporate philosophy would cross over in places. I guess it partly explains why PS3's more popular in Europe than the US. But yeah, NOA's people area always extremely helpful for the most part, I only ever met resistance with them once but it was just the "I don't know so I'm going to say we can't do it" thing people do in customer service.

Funny coincidence. The first Dissidia bricked my (6 month old!) PSP slim. I've tried unbricking it with a Pandora battery (a year later), but unfortunately, it's still a very expensive brick.

I've been using a second hand chunky PSP ever since. My hands hate it.

Sony do have very good customer support overall in Europe, especially for their Laptops and despite the above, are helpful with Playstation tech support (though whether or not what they do works andd/or is something you haven't already tried is another thing). They do have a pretty loyal userbase and SCEE does drop the ball a lot less often than SCEA and their representatives are a lot less embarrassing. Though that being said, the guy doing the video for Gran Turismo 5's ultimate collector's whatever edition for the UK was definitely cringe worthy. At started at him wearing special gloves to handle the box and went downhill from there.

The ads in Europe tend to be different than in the US too:

Nintendo - Markets to women but comes off as incredibly sexist and backwards since it tends to advertise games like Animal Crossing, Nintendogs and Cooking Mama as being aimed soley at women

The 3DS adverts are notorious over here for having a bunch of people claim that the 3DS takes it to the next level without actually showing any gameplay or showing off any of the 3DS's features . It's just people saying how great it is. The game ads for the 3DS are exactly the same and never show any gameplay footage. The Street Fighter 4 one is probbaly the best one though I can only find the viral ads for it on youtube and not the TV ads.

                      Microsoft -

Sony - Okay I think everyone actually ignores their ads after they started to do pretty generic and unmemorable ads. They did have this one from five years ago though that makes the average Nine Inch Nails video look like Peter fucking Pan. Thankfully it was banned.

Some of the worst ads are the DQIX adverts by some fifteen year old boys in mowhawks with the worst fake american accents you will ever hear
American guys don't talk like valley girls.

                        Like, whatever.

Try telling that to whoever the hell they hired to do those ads. They're some twins who just started appearing on TV last year or maybe the year before that (can't remember) and have been plaguing the TV since. The worst thing is is that is how they actually speak.

I don't know if they're real or just very good trolls...

Yeah, the 3DS ads are pretty much the same regardless of region. Watch other people be impressed by the 3DS.

To be fair, its what's happening now with real non-recorded people everywhere now.
