"Speaking at a talk during the Game Developer Conference today, designer Yu Suzuki said that he thinks Sega is going to let him make Shenmue III. The audience broke into shouts and applause, and then Suzuki abruptly changed topics."

He also said it was dependent on budget issues. Previously he said for this to happen someone would have to pay for it as an exclusive so they could fund it.

While I wasn't a fan of the PS2 Yakuza games, it seems the PS3 ones have been better and that particular team would be well-suited to make a Shenmue game, particularly given the nature of its combat.

The big problem is, though, that its been ten years since Shenmue II. Those two games are incredibly dated now and would need a re-release - but I think even fewer people would find them enjoyable now. It was ambitious stuff for its time, but we've had far more robust games since then - they just won't hold up as they are now.

He needs to approach this as a three part act and knock it out as one game.

    Act I - Ryo's life in Japan
    Act II - Hong Kong/Kowloon
Act III - Wherever it went from using the mirrors to get that sword after meeting Shenhua

He may also need to cut out the meandering bits and make it a tad more linear. I know, I know, pissing away the days and seeing unique events gave the game some character, but given Sega is going to slap him with a tight budget either way it may be for the best to trim some of unimportant story elements from the original two games.

I'd rather see how it all ties together than randomly meet Nozomi in the park or dust off Xiuying's books for hours on end. I'm not going to eek out every day just to see Lan Di kill me or some shit.

But if budget is the concern it may be best for this to be a Wii title or one of the handhelds. I'd rather see it done, done well and profitable for Sega than it be another losing venture like it was on Dreamcast and Xbox. The expense of doing in this in HD would be deep given the scope Shenmue aims for.

We're not talking the sort of open world Rockstar went for - but a world where you could enter just about every building and pick up and look at most things in a room. Even today, GTA's interiors or mostly cut-and-paste shit for the sake of having a really big outside world. The expense for the kind of detail Suzuki would want would be astronomical in HD.

I just want it to happen somewhere, I don't really care where, but I think they should be practical about it.

When I got Shenmue on Christmas in 2000, I stayed up and played for several hours and just got absolutely wrapped up in it. I had never played anything like it, and found myself actually caring deeply about the characters. Also, I was absolutely mind-blown when I hit the arcades, spending endless hours on Space Harrier and Hang-on. I'd always check my ranking online in hopes I'd be one of the top scorers XD.

I was sad when I heard Shenmue II wouldn't be coming out in NA for the Dreamcast, but was able to convince my Mom to import the EU version for me. After completing that, I couldn't wait until the next released. Then it never came, and I've been waiting for years for even a sliver of hope such as this. Never in my life have I felt so attached to a game series, and the Shenmue fanboy in me hopes this all works out.

P.S. I shed tears during the Ryu and Nozomi motorcycle scene. D:

if they are really going to do this, then for Download or a rerelease (both on 1-2 set) of the first two games. or when the third one comes out, do a collectors edition that comes with both 1 and 2

I was never really interested in the game, but I do respect it for its style and game play. In fact now that I have grown as a gamer, I might enjoy them now.
