    The Art of Video Games

The Art of Video Games exhibition will explore the 40-year evolution of video games as an artistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects, the creative use of new technologies, and the most influential artists and designers. We want you to help us select the eighty video games that will be represented in the exhibition. Remember, this is an art exhibition, so be sure to vote for games that you think are visually spectacular or boast innovative design!

Awesome. I voted for the categories where I could make an informed decision. Definitely looking forward to this.

Half Life 2 vs. Portal, really? That's not fair unless they let us vote for both.

Only one even remotely hard to decide is dreamcast action.

          In b4 /b/ votes.

You're voting on just the graphics, be they either beautiful or of innovative use. You're not voting on which game is better.

I would say that it's pretty obvious that while Half Life 2 was a beautiful game it wasn't really that much prettier then any number of other games released at the same time and Portal used its graphics in a more innovative fashion. Portal probably has a better claim to the position in the exhibit based on that.

The lone screenshot provided isn't really enough to give a good sense of the overall scope of the graphics of a given game.

This is one of the reasons they opened it up to votes. The people who know the details of the games and how they looked and worked with their graphics aren't the curators of the museum who by and large were not the generation that played them, but those that have played the games through the years.

Man, I know you can't please everyone, but FFVII really has no place in that list if we're comparing PSX RPG graphics.

Making me choose between Chrono Trigger and A Link to the Past is harsh D: Was expecting to see SMW2 Yoshi's Island in the action section too.

                    Still, this is pretty neat.

I would've preferred to see FFVIII on that list, but I'm pretty sure FFVII is there more for it's popularity.

That one was tough, but at least it wasn't dumb, like choosing between Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. That was just stupid.

Well, yes it does. It was the first FF to go to 3d instead of sprites, which would constitute a innovative use of graphics. How many other 3d object instead of sprite RPG's were there before FFVII? I'm having trouble finding that. There is then also the use of FMV to tell the story for parts to give a look the engine couldn't. FFVII is not pretty, but pretty isn't the only thing they're displaying.

FFVII inclusion is much like the really early games they're including, more for technical merit and accomplishment than straight looks.

It also has Tifas wonderful assets.

They used pretty much the same engine. So unlike other entries on the list, you pretty much get to just vote on which one had the better art direction or style.

Well, the CG was neat at the time though if they were going to use PS1 visuals, why the fuck wasn't FF8 on that list?

And where the crap is Valkyria Chronicles? Some of these votes were pretty tough, wow.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who noticed the lack of Valkyria.
