  • SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked

Well Atlus finally announced it, so I can post something

AND ON THE EIGHTH DAY: ATLUS BRINGS EXPANDED, ENHANCED SMT: DEVIL SURVIVOR OVERCLOCKED FOR NINTENDO 3DS TO NORTH AMERICA IN SUMMER 2011

Bigger and better is how we roll.

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- JANUARY 26, 2011 -- Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today officially announced a North American release for Shin Megami Tensei®: Devil Survivor Overlocked™, an RPG/SRPG hybrid for Nintendo 3DS™ currently scheduled to launch on the highly anticipated handheld in Summer 2011.

Considered one of the best RPGs of 2009*, the original Devil Survivor presented gamers with a novel premise: Tokyo is in full lockdown, the government's swift, coldblooded response to a surprise demon invasion. While you and your friends must solve the nature of the interdimensional rift through which the horrific creatures are entering your world, saving the world is not your highest priority; staying alive, on the other hand, is.

Expanded and enhanced, Devil Survivor Overclocked for Nintendo 3DS builds upon the game's original release with the addition of voice acting for the entirety of the game's lengthy, unconventional narrative. Moreover, that very story, already boasting multiple endings based on critical decisions by the player, now concludes with a special eighth chapter, a rousing epilogue for Shin Megami Tensei fans. The game's beautifully remastered hand drawn artwork and character portraits benefit from the new system's higher resolution screens, offering players a crisper, higher fidelity experience.

SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked is currently scheduled to launch on Nintendo 3DS in Summer 2011. More details will be made available at a later date. Look for the game's official website to launch at Pre-order SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked for Nintendo 3DS, available Summer 2011!.

Demons were harmed in the making of this game.

Sorry about the watermarked images, but its the quickest images I could find

More or less what the press release says, prettier version of the same game, now with voice over and bonus content and about 20 more demons to obtain from the online auctions.

It should be noted that all the action is still on the bottom screen, so who knows what the 3D display will actually do for the game aside from scan info.

That and more difficulty options to make the game easier for wimps. Beelzebub was a epic bastard in this game and I see they have not fixed his game this time around. He had this spell that sent a swarm of flies on your units and plant eggs in them. When the egg status didn't get removed, your ally died when they hatched and then you had more of the fuckers to deal with.

Choices you make over the course of the story do affect he ending and what sort of bosses you'll be facing. There are five endings, so there's quite a bit to do and revisit in the game, too, to say nothing of the new day scenario.

This was one of the few SRPGs I ever managed to will myself to finish. I usually get bored with them and forget about them, but this one had a good system and story, plus the combat felt more like a traditional turn-based RPG than an SRPG, though positioning on the isometric field still matters.

Devil Survivor's battle system was an improved version of Persona 1's but it actually worked :p

I have no intention of getting a 3DS at release since the release titles are all terrible though I would be tempted to get one later if more games like this come out for it.

Well, the real trick is that RPGs take time to develop, so I didn't exactly whip out the knives when Atlus decided to do a snazzier enhanced port of the DS game with extra content.

Its actually a smart move, as 3DS won't have much RPG competition at the time and this was one of the best RPGs out on DS or otherwise in 2009. The fact that its getting a special edition reflects the original's success and gives me hope there will be a true sequel at some point.

This will come out around the same time as Zelda: OOT, though, so I hope its not obscured by that.

I know people whine about ports and remakes for handhelds, but its gotta start somewhere and I don't see anyone still playing Zoo Keeper and Untold Legends. All these unoriginal games give rise to new stuff in time. Atlus came up with Etrian Odyssey, after all.

The Xbox-only SMT NINE had that premise well before TWEWY did. You were in a virtual version of the Shibuya and other Tokyo locales because the outside world was dangerous from nuclear fallout and a corrupting force called "noise" (sounds familiar) was ruining the datascape people were now living in. So you did the SMT thing and gained dominion over angels or demons to fight them off.

Also, SMT usually has demons overrunning Tokyo anyway, so any way you cut it, TWEWY is copying SMT. Nomura just hoped no one would notice.

Also, unlike TWEWY, the protagonist of Devil Survivor is silent and not a angsty little douchebag like Neku. Seriously, if you want me to enjoy a story, at least make the hero somewhat likable. Even Squall had his good points starting out.

Here's a douche that's a protagonist, but he manages it better:

          Malcom

At any rate, play the game and you'll see its actually better than TWEWY. And as opposed to a dozen annoying characters, you only have one in Yuzu, but she's got large funbags to offset that. Not that it works, mind you.

Didn't play either of them. Just pointing out the idea of "oh no, we're all trapped in <x city> with <y fantasy creature>!" is not a novel concept, and hasn't been for at least the past 30 years.

Hell, isn't the whole "Interdimensional rift allowing in terrible demons" part of it basically a staple of SMT?

Depends if the world hasn't already gone to hell, really. If it hasn't there's some phenomenon that will make them enter the world or engulf it by some other means.

Devil Survivor's protagonist had a lot of lines and there are plenty of chances to play him differently in each game. One of my favourites was to pick the dialogue options that make him sound like some cloudcookoolander just to see the reactions of characters like Yuzu and Naoya. Actually to be honest, there hasn't really been a SMT protagonist who has been whiny without a reason. Ken from P3 saw his mother killed in front of him and has to live with her killer, Shinji who in turn has to live with that death on his hands and the fear that his persona will go berserk and murder someone else again. Yukari's life was basically just fucked up from the start and the events of the game do nothing to help. Yosuke in P4 whines a lot but considering the entire game world seems to hate him he's got a reason to mope. The Devil Survivor cast were basically trapped in hell for a week with things getting worse and worse while having a big fat clock over their heads and e-mails telling them how and when they would die on that day. Heck the Demi-Fiends life was utterly fucked up but he wasn't too shook up about it.

And speaking of SMT remakes, I wouldn't mind seeing a PSP remake of P4. Though that being said I'm not sure what you could really add to it unless they go for the female protagonist route. I mean at least with P3P they could update the AI and battle system and add the new Persona from P4. Then again I would be buy a simple direct port.

And to be honest I rarely buy a console within the first year of release purely so I can have an actual game selection when I decide buy it.

                  Re: SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked

Meh, with Nintendo and handhelds, you tend to know the games will come, so I get them at launch.

Any consoles or other handhelds, not so much. I won't even by a Nintendo console at launch. There's no reason to by any console at launch, really, but at least with Nintendo handhelds I know there's still releases from the previous platform to enjoy on it along with the new format.

PSP didn't have any identity starting out and they're trying the "its like a console" gimmick again, so PSP2 is likely a wait-and-see. I know it will have a Monster Hunter that thats great for Japan, but not so much for the rest of us and it was the rest of us that decided how successful PSP really was.

granted it is ahead of PS3 by about 20 million worldwide, putting it at 60 million. Its certainly no failure, but PSP was a slow starter. Took three years to hit its groove in Japan and while I'd consider years 4 and 5 spectacular for PSP, the rest of the west doesn't seem to give a damn.

There was a mention of Persona 4 Portable being possible at a Sony's investors meeting by an Atlus rep, but with the way PSP2 and 3DS have lept forward that's not too surprising and given Atlus is starting to look multiplatfrom for consoles, its possible it might pan out that way for handhelds, too. A Persona was listed for 3DS, too.

Persona 4 would be difficult for PSP given that they were chopping out bits and pieces of text from the PS2 version just to get it on a dual-layer DVD. Even with all the retrofitting P3P had, given that particular info, I'd suspect P4P would just be a nightmare to make for PSP. Atlus isn't going to do what SE did with FF Type-0 and make two UMDs for Persona 4.

PSP will have P2: Innocent Sin and likely P2: Eternal Punishment before all is said and done with PSP, though, which is something to look forward to.

                    Re: SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked

Should be fun, hopefully I should be able to import them since Atlus frankly doesn't seem to give a shit about the UK. The last game they released here was Persona 4 and because Square-Enix has the rights to publish Atlus games in Europe it was six months after the US release and has no advertising or even announcements that it was out. Same thing happened with Disgaea 3 too. 6 months after US release plus another three months of delays due to Squeenix trying to push Chrono Trigger and Last Remnant.

                      Re: SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked

Well, I think as far as Persona console releases go, SE knows its hot stuff and will publish it.

Atlus is niche competition on consoles for SE.

On handhelds, the playing field is a bit more even and SE probably doesn't want the competition if they can't help it. Keep in mind SE's ego has been seriously bruised by Capcom. SE has to be worried what might be the next thing to explode right now and SMT has gained a lot of attention in recent years via Persona.

They saw Street Fighter IV on 3DS and probably shit themselves when they realized Dissidia 012 was going up against that. That and SE's offering for 3DS launch was Bust-A-Move, which I'm sure everyone wants like they want an ice pick lodged in their skull.
