    Re: PSP2 (NGP) Info

PS > And in a sort of related note, while lossless audio/video are of similar quality for most applications. Why would anyone want to use compressed media if they don't need to? After all compression was created to save space at the expense of processing power, so if storage space and data transfer are not an issue there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to compress things in the first place.
It just seems like bad form to me. This is pure speculation, but the way I see it larger file sizes means it takes longer move things in and out of memory/hard drives and you can hold less things in both. It also means DLC takes longer to download.

And there's the thing: Storage space is usually an issue. Data transfer is always an issue.

Unless you like having to pre-install games or have long-ass load times.

But PS3 is working on that... mostly.

        Sometimes, anyway.

well its nice to see that the PSP2 is going back to car...eeerr "memory sticks" for game storage, UMD was a stupid idea to begin with for a handheld.

I will have to "convert" all my PSP games though so I can play them on the PSP2... and that bothers me for two reasons, 1....I have to re-buy all my PSP games, and 2....I never really considered downloads as part of my collection, but it seems like I will have to start.

When you think about it, Sony has dicked retailers for the second time with PSP now.

Thankfully the first time it was with PSPGo and they hardly stocked them anyway. This time, though, Sony has given advance notice to all customers that you really should just buy PSP games by download if you're planning on getting an NGP. Its like they're trying to kill PSP.

And Sony might undercut themselves with Playstation Phone and Playstation Suite. Well, except nothing really changes with the long process of converting PSX games to downloadable form. Its a nice thought to have games playable on multiple mobile devices but the PSP2 is going to have all of them and the PSP/PSP2 games, well, except the UMD ones. It doesn't sound like a good strategy to face off against Apple with.

Sony seems to understand product identity for consoles and formats, but not for the portable market.

well it seems games for PSP2 will still be sold in stores.... they will be placing them on memory sticks, but to be honest I am not sure how they will go about doing this.

Pre-install is a very good thing, there are too many benefits that come with it and no real reason not to do it.

If anything it really sucks for early PS3 buyers (like myself) because of the laughable storage capacity on the HDD included, but that's relatively easy to solve.
