Re: Square Enix Event today VXIII, AgitoXIII, and Duodecim full reveals!

Well, seems to me if Ramza bleeds out in three turns, he's dead. You lose.
But that's not what Nomura is doing. The FFT equivalent would be "If Ramza gets KO'd, you immediately lose" not "If Ramza bleeds out for 3 turns and perma-dies, you immediately lose."

Then again this is not all too different from Kingdom Hearts, except in KH your buddies will auto-revive eventually. I'm guessing the only reason they let you revive your buddies is that they're probably AI-controlled and thus prone to dying very quickly just like in KH.
Hell, FFXIII was so pussified that they let you restart any battle after losing. This as opposed to starting from the last save point or something. And with Full Health/MP at restart.
What's the difference? There's a save point before the boss 99% of the time in Final Fantasy. I've never played XIII and have no intention of doing so, but I appreciate anything that cuts down on wasted time.

I'm not sure what's so 'pussified' about letting you start over from the same fight after you die.

If you didn't fail any sequence up to that point, then what's wrong with just starting over where you had your mishap?

"Dude, I found a secret boss but he killed me. Then it wiped my save file and told me I needed to buy another copy to play again. I put the new copy in and after many hours, I beat him. So challenging bro, omfg all games need this shit."

Because its just one more thing that makes it easier, which will be layered with another thing that makes it easier.

Kind of the reason I'm disgusted with with the check-point/regen/perk/killstreak/ironsights-happy bullshit of FPS right now. There's no downside to dying, no penalty and as such, no real sense of accomplishment when you win. May as well just give everyone first place and tons of EXP per win while you're at it. I want that genre rid of all that shit. Keep a modest check point scheme and leave the rest out.

I don't want to see RPGs turn in to what FPS have. And if FFXIII is any indication, FF looks to be going that route. Even though games like Demon's Souls have proven we're capable of handling a little sadism.

And complaining about leader death being a loss in the face of being able to start right over from the start of the fight full HP/CP? Come on, if they were going to just let you start right over, isn't leader death at least a fair Game Over criteria? If not, then what is a fair loss criteria in a game filled with real-time decisions and one character to control?

Re: Square Enix Event today VXIII, AgitoXIII, and Duodecim full reveals!

Accomplishment is an insanely subjective thing so in the end what really matters is whether or not players are actually enjoying having/not-having said penalties.

If they keep happily playing the game then less death penalties and more focus on objectives then less penalties is the way to go. If they get bored because they die a lot and have nothing else to do or there's nothing else to provide challenge then death penalty is the way to go.

But it's all very situational depending on the type of gameplay and content.

          Or something like that.

Actually quite a few times I've come across a section where the last save point was outside of the dungeon and you're screwed (royally) if you didn't save. Although I agree with you that it shouldn't have an impact on whether or not the game is good.

Of course, they could always do the whole LOTR SNES thing ... you lose the battle and they flash you a 26 character hex code so you can enter it at the start menu to get back to where you left off ... lulz.

You know, I may have spoken too soon earlier. I was thinking along the lines of a traditional RPG.

Versus XIII is supposed to be more action oriented like KH, isn't it? In that case, I can accept Noctis death = game over. The "party members" in Kingdom Hearts were basically useless enemy distractions that I would have simply gotten rid of if given the option, anyway.

I maintain that it is a completely shit mechanic in any traditional-ish JRPG.

If its an action RPG like KH, I certainly don't mind it. In KH2:FM on Critical, Donald almost always died right on the outset of the new and data match fights and Goofy was soon to follow once Once More and Second Chance failed, so really it was usually just Sora fighting alone. He died and you were done.

Anyway I digress from the original reason for my post. The trailers for the rest of the games (versus, KH Triple D, Type-0 and Dissidia) are all out now in much cleaner quality.

The JP site for Dissidia has been updated with new bgm (complete trailer/opening song), FF2 character profiles and info on the Aerith Assist. All that is left are V and XI character profiles and we all know why those are delayed

I'm interested to see what Type-0 is really about, seems like you're one of the four factions at war, so there's going to be quite a lot going on - probably why there's over 30 actors and the game spans two UMDs.

Plus of all the FF games in the works, this one has the most obvious Star Wars referencing going on.

I enjoyed the 'restarting the battle' mechanic from FFXIII for a few reasons...

                    1. You didn't have to skip through cutscenes to get back to where you were.
                    2. They now had the liberty to make the battles much more difficult and give you as many chances as you needed to figure out how to beat your enemy. Each battle felt like a separate challenge, sometimes even like a puzzle (the summon fights).
                    3. I received an even greater sense of accomplishment from winning, because the battles were harder. I got really excited to finally beat some of those bosses after multiple tries. The only difference was that I saved 15 minutes of my life between each try.

No, it West Side Story with J-Rockers in it and they don't sing.

That's really still the one thing that annoys the crap out of me about this game. Thematically, its Romeo and Juliet. Painfully close to Baz Luhrmann's take on it.

Well, except they still stuck to the Elizabethan English.
