  • OK, Let's try this again - Favorite game of 2010

So last year, I tried to see if we could do a "best of" the last decade, but you guys didn't want to play by the rules and wanted to put stuff like Xenogears, FFVII, Chrono Trigger or some other game from the 90s in it.

This year, we make it easy.

One game, it has to have come out in 2010 in the west (or the east, if that's where you are), if you didn't buy any game this year, oh well, too bad. If it came out in 2009, it doesn't count. That means you, Uncharted 2.

I don't care if the 2010 game is a retail or a downloadable game, indie or mainstream, handheld or console. Hell, it can be in beta for all I care. People are playing the hell out of Minecraft and its not close to finished. I guess this means FFXIV qualifies, too.

So one game from 2010 you liked the most, this shouldn't be too hard. If its too hard, flip a damn coin. I'll update the thread later to see who walks away with the DIV's Award for Most Awesome Game of Ever in 2010.

Which is to say, I'll just find a golden star icon for it.

Isn't it awesome? Took all of five seconds to look up. Its the thought that counts.

So let's light this candle. Keep the discussion focused on the games you liked. You can work in some honorable mentions, too. Its probably the only way No More Heroes 2 will be discussed anyway. I may also totally make up some special awards based on the games mentioned.

The cut-off day for votes I'll let slide to January 2nd.

Also, be sure to make fun of whatever J9 picks, because let's face it, you all are going to anyway. Remember, FFXIII was going to be the best game ever before Ken's Rage: Fist of the North Star came along.

      mmmm best of 2010 huh?.....

      ==Nier==

I fond this game to be very VERY underrated, and found it sad that it can be bought new for 14.99 now -.-

It's story was great, I felt for the characters and the game looked nice, oh and the music was wonderful.

          CASTLEVANIA HARMONY OF DESPAIR

The most fun ever and it continues to get more content, mew (two new Chapters in January!)! The co-op is the best out there too! (6 players is super rare, and this is the first worldwide online Castlevania too!) Easy to pick up, plenty of things to master, great growing selection of characters, many comfy visual and audio options, settings, music you can equip to any stage and boss battle, a shop system, revolutionary communication system, and much more, mew!

People have played and are still replaying and enjoying this more months than their entire lifetime of playing SOTN and other games!

Ya it actually has the best character interaction in a FF! Storywise it's really the best and most emotional! They are all real heroes! Especially Snow and Vanille! But I felt the story could have been even better if they gave the other characters a bigger role. It could have been entirely possible if the writers made Gadot and Lebreau follow Snow and become L'Cie too. I felt Serah deserved a playable part too, even though it would be a flashback.
And I don't think the story should have finished where it did, there are still Pulse Fal'Cie out there and cursed L'Cie. I think it finished just at the very beginning of the end. They still have to rescue Vanille and Fang and free everyone from Fal'Cie and the curse. Well there's always a sequel that could have an adventure that's bigger and better and with more open exploration. lol!

                      Fable III

...for me. The main storyline was pretty short but it unraveled an interesting little yarn. The side quests really made the world of Albion come to life in all it's wierdly twisted ways. I appreciated a game that constantly rewards it's playerbase. It was not hard by any means... it was simply fun. I give it my vote from pure enjoyment. Biggest gripe about the game for me is the DLC. Some (if not all) of that shouldn't be content to be purchased and should have been in the game at release.

Going to do it by genre:

                        Best Action Game: Neir
Honourable Mention : Assassin's Creed Brotherhood (I actually prefer AC:B but Neir is the better game)

                        Best Platformer: BIT.TRIP.BEAT
                        Honourable Mention: Super Meat Boy

                        Best RPG: Persona 3 Portable
Honourable Mention: Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver

Best Fighting Game: BlazBlue Calamity Trigger (Yes this is an '10 release for the UK. No we still don't have Continuum Shift)
Honourable Mention: Okay I have nothing to put here because I can't stand fighting games and hardly play them so wouldn't know what else to put. Did that Lucky Star one ever get localised?

Best Strategy Game: Dawn of War 2 - Chaos Rising
Honourable Mention: Europe Universallis III: Divine Wind

Best Shooter: Call of Duty Black Ops (Finally having multiplayer balance FTW)
Honourable Mention: Battlefield Bad Company 2

                        Best Game Nobody Played: Recettear
                        Honourable Mention: Resonance of Fate

EDIT: Because I apparently have to arbitrarily say one of these games is the best somehow, I'm going to be a dick and say:

Best Game of 2010: World of Warcraft: Cataclysm (Because I can)
Honourable mention: Final Fantasy XIV (Because I'm going to get flamed anyway for the above and I LIKE both these games)

Oh lordy there were a lot of amazing titles this year...

Action: Vanquish. Much as I adored God of War 3, Vanquish was original and unlike most games I've played managed to keep the action consistently over the top @ break-neck speed. Really hope they make a sequel, but with better acting.

RPG: FF13 I guess. It was kind of a slow year for RPGs. There are a couple of titles I haven't gotten around to trying like Nier & Alpha Protocol but out of what I did care to play (I hate Fable and don't care to play Fallout ever again) I gotta sadly vote FF13 almost by default. Not that it was a bad game, but it so did not live up to expectations.

Strategy: No-brainer, no explanation needed either. Star Craft 2. Valkyria 2 gets honorable mention though.

New IP: Heavy Rain. I haven't touched it since I finished with it, but I must have just played nothing but HR for like a month when I got it. One of the few games I've got the platinum trophy for, I really would like to see more games like HR. Only without the stupid plot hole >_>

Shooter: Halo: Reach. F'ing right I vote up Halo. I would have said Bad Company 2 because of how crazy awesome that game is, but I feel Bungie deserves recognition for putting out a fantastic Swan Song. Halo won't be Halo without them. Black Ops can suck a fat one, even though it's by far the most balanced CoD to date. It still suffers from all the traditional CoD failures and none of the guns really seem to stand out other than the blatantly OP ones (G11, AK74u etc) like they did in MW2.

As much as I hate myself for admitting it, Modern Warfare 2 is actually more fun than Black Ops even though BO is by far the better, more balanced game over all. Bad Company 2 still takes a steam shit on the both of them though especially the new Vietnam DLC.

As for my favorite over all game of 2010? I wanted to say FF14, I really did, but it's a toss-up between FFXI and Starcraft 2. I have to give major props to SE for reigniting my feigning interest in XI. I was done with the game and ready to quit once Wings finished, but oh no, Abyssea had to be absolutely epic and fun. The fact that the new relics (Empyreans) are actually accessible is another major plus.

On the other side, SC2 has really great MP that Blizzard is constantly tweaking, but it's the Campaign that captivated me. Absolutely 100% worth the horrendously long wait, and I can scarcely contain myself thinking about Heart of the Swarm. Too bad it won't be ready until 2012 at the earliest. At least Diablo 3 should be out before then, and (hopefully) FF14 will also be in a playable, enjoyable state XD

You guys can only vote for one game. Way to do it wrong.
