  • Funny Stuff Thrown in Games

Well as you guys all know I've been playing WoW again and Cataclysm was just released. Along with it came a plethora of new quests, dungeons, cinematics, etc., some of which are amazing.

Blizzard is actually really great at this pop-culture reference thing. Seriously since the start of Cataclysm I've laughed at so much shit, some of which I've probably already forgotten about, but man, there's some funny shit to be found if you look.

What pop-culture or even obscure references have you found in a game and though, "Oh hey, I get that! That's funny!"

    To start:

First time you fly into Twilight Highlands as Horde, you're in a fleet of zeppelins, one of which crashes. Those who play WoW know that Goblins are the creators/engineers of zeppelins, those who don't, well, you know this now. Anyway. As the one zeppelin crashes, one of the NPCs yells, "Oh, the GOBLINITY!"

    I laughed my ass off.

    Other great stuff this xpac:

    Quest: Camel Tow
    Quest: Erecting the Staff
    Quest: Just the Tip

There's also the "THIS. IS. DRAGONMAW!" some random NPC yelled at me yesterday in TH.

So, what kind of funny shit have you seen in your gaming lately that's made you laugh?

Pop-culture references in WoW? I would never have guessed.

Though, to stay on topic, I will note that my first avatar here was Miles Edgeworth saying "This is madness!" in the third case in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. What made it especially funny was that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney was released before 300 was.

If I wanted a list I could have looked it up myself. I'm asking which references people found and enjoyed. And I'm sure WoW is not the only game with them.

And yes, I partially wanted to share the goblinity one, because it was so funny to me it was worth sharing with others.

You like NIS games, which thrive on breaking the fourth wall about half the time.

Dragon Quest has always done well with character names and quest names. I just came upon a doctor named Mehdik that wants me to obtain five strips of cloth from mummies. The quest's name?

          Wrapper's Delight.

Then I met an abbot known as Jack of AllTrades who become the monster Master of Nu'un.

Its all cheesy laughs, but meeting the puff-puff girls are always the best. In Dragon Quest VIII, you could play the whole game and likely miss this one little door mysteriously placed behind a waterfall on a mountain side. Inside, you are offered "ze puff-puff."

The Fable games have so many I wouldn't know where to begin.

The one I remember coming across most recently was a Conan reference. A tombstone in Mourning Wood (lol in and of itself) has a couple Swarzenager quotes and you dig up a toy sword.

Many achievements/trophies have pop-culture references as well.

Oh my, maybe there is no immersion to destroy then.

Re: Funny Stuff Thrown in Games

In one area of Nagarand in WoW you can find a floating island and see a skeleton under a tree with a ton of fallen apples, apparently belonging to Sir Issac Newton.

The Blood Elf Female /silly quotes. Here are my favourites:

"Ugh I hate Thunder Bluff! You can't find a good burger anywhere."

"So I went to this troll spa the other day and I wound up with dreadlocks and a frigging bone in my nose! I mean come on! Who PAYS for that?"

"I went to Undercity to get a facial. Ha! Have you seen these people? I said, 'You don't have a lower jaw and you're going to give ME a facial?' She got mad...at least I think she did. You ever heard someone talk without a lower jaw? 'Rawe-rau-werew' Ho-ho! She sounded like a murloc!"

"Do you think the expansion will make me fat?"

Actually there is also an achievement you get for killing a random Whale in the middle of Thousand Needles. It drops nothing and isn't even hard to kill, the achievement mocks you for it though.

Just about every single reference to Elite Tauren Chieftain (I love that band) and most of the unit quotes in Starcraft 2. My favourites are the Medic, Viking and Ghost quotes.

Shin Megami Tensei games in general have funny references to other games thrown in like in Persona 3 where if you're male you can play an MMO that is for all intents and purposes Persona 2.

From the same ingame-MMO there is a female player you meet and befriend. She eventually sends what it implied to be a naked picture of herself. That player is also an NPC you can meet. Showing her the picture leads to one of the more hilarious moments of the game.

Devil Survivor also has a funny e-mail from Yuzu where to whines that and wants to "Go-Hom" which was also the item that lets you teleport out of dungeons on Persona 4.

Star Control II has a ton of these. For example, at the beginning of the game, when you're choosing a name for your new alliance of aliens that will help you fight the Ur-Quan, one of the options is the "United Federation of Worlds". If you choose it, the starbase commander you're talking to says "That has a familiar ring about it; nevertheless, we will make it so."

And practically everything about the Ariloulaleelay (big heads with huge almond-shaped eyes, little saucer-shaped ships that can make sharp turns in defiance of physics -- literally, there is a physics engine for every other ship in the game but the Arilou are inertialess and can hover right next to a planet without being pulled into it and taking damage).

I could probably name a lot more if I had played it more recently...

Of course, Star Control II is like 15 years old now, so the cultural references are that old too, but I'm old enough to get them anyway.

Another one I just remembered is the quest titled "A Case of Crabs." The NPC even thanks you in the end, saying something to the effect of, "I'll be sure to remember that in my greatest time of need, you gave me a case of crabs."

There's a few times in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin where Charlotte apologizes for not being more useful.

And its true, for most of the game, she's not terribly useful. Apology accepted. At least when she's in tow, she takes damage in the form of MP, which lessens damage Johnathan could take from a back attack.

Hahaha now I would never expect such a thing to come out of SE's game. But that's very awesome. Still won't stop people from making stupid names though.

I'm sad to report most if not all of the really funny things I've seen in games in recent years would be lost in translation.

How about Serious Sam though? Like when he whistles Indiana Jones' theme after one of the traps. And (screaming) headless bombers were always fun.

I wish i had a list of item descriptions from Disgaea 2 so I could quote this correctly, but since I don't: the ninja class has a ability called Utsusemi. I think the description for Utsusemi was something like "If you are a ninja, you'd better know what this does." There was also one I noticed in Disgaea 3 for a spear named Moby Dick which said "Even the whales are surprised! Wow... "

Today I had the extreme pleasure of handing out some work to some NPCs. One of the NPCs was named Dumass, spoke in ALL CAPS, and later required that I rescue him from the depths of a mine. And when I turned him in, the NPC in charge was exasperated with me, sarcastically thanking me and reminding me about survival of the fittest.

I also got a pair of "Cue Cue Gloves."
