I have to seriously question if his feelings for Aerith were even real - how do we know he wasn't somehow attracted to her vicariously through the acting out of Zack's memories/persona? She was Zack's girl after all. I'm sure on some level he genuinely liked her as himself, but since she died before he recovered his memories and personality it's too hard to say.
It's why I find Aeris interesting. She seems to know all along that he was acting out Zack's persona and flat out says that Cloud is acting out someone else's life if you get her in the date scene. The Blind Idiot Translation trope being in full effect in that scene makes it seem more like an implied sex scene though.

And I linked that trope because I love the picture from it. I remember that happening a couple of years ago and I don't live that far from where it happened (Wrexham). Wrexham City Council have made some hilarious translation errors before. There is a school there with a sign that reads "Staff Entrance" in English and says "Enchant (as in hypnotise or charm) the the wooden stick" in Welsh .

This again is something people can grasp as in our day-to-day lives we see leaders and a media that are totally out of touch or in plain denial of what's really going on. Its not a kind of storytelling that's fun for everyone because it doesn't always unfold the way people would like it to, but that's kind of the point.
Ramza & Delita were two of the more interesting characters SE has come up with in some time.

Speaking of XI though, WotG felt like they it was finally getting into a somewhat serious plot but it kind of all fell apart again back to what you'd expect with this last update. I for one, was terribly disappointed with the ending (even more so with the shitty earring after waiting 3 years) and Abyssea's plot is rather weak too. Interesting, but ultimately stupid/more alt history bullshit.

It's like SE's not even trying anymore. To your point about Kefka vs Sephrioth, I totally agree and there was an article up on 8-bit theater years and years ago about how 7 was really just a rehash of 6 but with a smaller cast. As for why there's so much focus on anime-style drama lately, it's because that's the "in" thing in Japan and has been for a while now. It's also the reason for the character designs of Tidus & Vaan and I wish SE would cut it out already.

Its more to the end that they try too hard to dazzle with new hardware each time out and something always falls to the wayside when they do. I mean, how long did it take for Crisis Core and KH:BBS to come out on PSP? How long has Agito FFXIII been there? We're on the cusp of of hearing PSP2 announced (likely just before 3DS comes out, in a pathetic attempt to steal thunder) and at the rate things are going Agito FFXIII probably won't be out before it launches.

When you think about it FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX and FFX came out with lightning fast. There were not five year development cycles between them. Then FFXII took five years to come out and, in the US, launched around the time the PS3 arrived.. FFXIII was conceptualized for PS2 not unlike how a Final Fantasy was originally planned for the N64 before Sony decided to go with PSX instead. Part of why FFVII characters look so blocky is that FFVII was build out of N64 engine. FFVIII and FFIX used a better engine.

And all that platform shuffle cost FFXIII in an even bigger way given the cost of HD assets, they were already taking a loss on the budget to this game and then they thought it was smart to have the FFXI buring the candle at both ends by developing FFXIV while moving forward with FFXI.

These are problems that don't just come from the development team, they come from the top. As noble has Yochi Wada has been about taking a big paycut in the rough economy, some of this still lies squarely on him.

I'm a pretty patient guy when it comes to game releases, but they just threw a big curve today. They delayed DX: Human Revolution because they expect the fiscal year report to be pretty bad. Thing is, every preview I've read seems to suggest DX:HR is polished to a shine right now.

I'm the most patient person in the room when it comes to delays. I grew up being a big Zelda fan and "Zelda" is synonymous with "delay." Skyward Sward and Nintendo's just happy no one's bringing up the subject only because SMG2, Kirby, DKCR and the Goldeneye exclusive were a big clean-up this year and NSMB Wii just continues to fly of shelves. DS and Wii outsold PS3 this holiday and this is a down year for Nintendo.

I think Wada needs a little sit-down with Iwata, because Iwata is getting that shit done. In fact, I'm largely of the opinion that Japan really needs to look close at the likes of Nintendo because they are the one Japanese developer that knows how to reach out to the west, but they also need to be looking at smaller publishers and developers like Atlus, MVS and Xseed because those little guys run a tight ship with high quality games all around.

As for why there's so much focus on anime-style drama lately, it's because that's the "in" thing in Japan and has been for a while now. It's also the reason for the character designs of Tidus & Vaan and I wish SE would cut it out already.
Here's the thing - FFXII was exceptionally popular in Japan, so that partly says that the stories we see in FFXI and FFXIV would have a mass market. It might have to include a Vaan or Tidus character for the female crowd, but that's a small price to pay.

There are Japanese teen dramas that don't get as stupid as FFXIII, too. Its one thing to have a teen drama, but its another to have it be insulting for everyone watching. The reason I cite Persona 3 and 4 in particular is that it is a teen drama and there are plenty of zany or dysfunctional moments to be had, but each character feels like someone you've known and those characters deal with the sort of things we all deal with. That brings them so much closer than the stories Kitase likes to pen

Tidus I'm OK with, at least he had meaning & a personality. Vaan's just a red shirt.

Really the only bad scene I couldn't take in X was where he and Yuna do that stupid forced laugh... ugh I cringe just thinking about it.

not at all because Lightning and her DLC costume was revealed months ago already. The January event is more than just about Dissidia 2, mew

So as we all know, FFXIII International contains Final Fantasy XIII -Episode i-, a novel covering events after the ending of the game. Similar to how Episode 0 was the prequel to the game covering events and character backstories before the game's story, Episode i is a sequel covering events and character stories taking place after the conclusion of the game's story.

According to a member of NeoGAF, who read Japanese blogs and sites to find information, here is what Episode i is about:

The story started off just after the last scene of the game. The first thing the group did was to find Hope's dad, and to make sure the Sanctum troops were alright. The troops turned out to be okay (despite Rygdea was missing). Cocoon, together with one-third of the Cocoon's population, was destroyed. So Snow and Serah decided to build what they called a new world on pulse. On the other hand, Sazh and Hope wanted to become the strengths of the ones who were left behind. Within everyone's minds, rescuing Fang and Vanille was their first priority. However, they must also help the ones in need, and atone for what they have done.

Lightning, without notifying anyone, quietly walked away from the group. She didn't know why but has the feeling of someone (or something) calling her, urging her to move on. She has a feeling that the war wasn't over yet.

While Sazh, with his son Dahj, piloted his airship to rescue and support the ones in need, Hope went with the Sanctum troops after he was told that his dad has been found. Snow and Serah watched the three of them go. She told him she wanted to become a teacher in the future which he agreed. Just then, Serah finally realized Lightning was already nowhere to be seen. She then started to feel worried.

When Lightning finally came to realization, she found herself floating in the middle of a sea-like zone. There were monsters but neither animals nor plants could be seen. She couldn't sense any breath of life nor could she feel the passage of time. It was a world filled with nihility and abyss. She didn't know why she was there. The only thing Lightning knew was to keep going. "Where am I going?" She asked. There was no answer. In that momentary yet eternal silence, the voice disappeared.

^ Jesus, S-E, why on earth do you need a canon reason for Lightning to be in Dissidia [012] Duodecim (and wtf at that title... )?

I swear, the inmates have completely taken over the asylum there.

To be fair, other characters were given canon reasons for how they'd return and Shantotto cited the Cavernous Maws as how she wound up there.

The whole game is actually set 2000 years in the past before the original FF, which if you recall, is where the Light Warriors faced Chaos and defeated him. FF was the first game in the series to have a perpetual time-loop like FFVIII's, which is why the battle are fought over and over for eternity. Garland is the younger version of Chaos, goes to the future, mucks things up good, goes to the past and becomes Chaos and the Light Warriors defeat him there.

The Warrior of Light is supposed to be the guy that defeated Chaos by story canon, but that never quite explained the other guys in the game. The other Final Fantasy heroes in the game kinda close the gap for that.

Generally its silly to have canon reasons why characters in a cross-over meet. You don't really need a reason to explain why Cloud Strife and Scrooge McDuck can both be in Hollow Bastion and if you did devise on beyond the paper-thin, it would be really bad.

Which is why when Batman teams up with Spider-Man, he just goes to New York because, well, Spider-Man lives there. They're not going to mess with the whole dimensional rift between DC and Marvel, they're just going to New York and not explaining why its replaced Metropolis. This is the same reason Mavel Vs. Capcom and Smash Bros. never bothers with the details.

Why does Dissidia bother? Seems they want us to believe this is one cohesive universe. Fair enough, but seeing as these characters would never meet otherwise its seems a bit silly.

Its not really a good or bad thing, but being a FF-branded game, people are going to expect some kind of overblown story and cry if its not there.

And if you actually play it, its pretty plain to see its not.

You build up Brave Points with Brave Attacks to do later do HP damage with HP attacks. And unleashing an HP attack can be a risk if you Bravery isn't high enough to totally take out your opponent, because once you've done the HP attack, you're briefly vulnerable to Break status, preventing you from accumulating further bravery.

And against another player you're not really going ot see the 9.999 Damage blowouts you can do to rank-and-file NPCs. And there are plenty of NPCs that won't just roll over and take it, do the 120+ NPCs in Colosseum or play Inward Chaos. Those NPCs don't fuck around.

I could sit here and call any fighter or brawler a "button-masher," but that's really just for trolling.

DOA isn't a button-masher, its just a poor-man's Virtua Fighter with breasts, weaker reversals and multi-tiered levels.

Bloody Roar isn't a button-masher, its a poor man's DOA for furry fans.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl... even people at Nintendo now admit Melee was better.

Tekken... well... nobody likes Tekken now that Street Fighter's back in town.
