Nomura confirms first sign of FFXIII-2 hurray!!! ^_^
I found nothing wrong with Ashe and Basch. It was mostly Vaan and by extension Penelo.
Well that and technically the heroes were really not that heroic. They ultimately did the dirty work of the gods (just minus using the magicite) and maintain the lie that Basch was a murderer so Ashe can reclaim her throne. The real villains live on, waiting to find another pawn, Balthier and Fran are assumed dead, Basch's name is reviled and Vaan and Penelo go back to being street rats after having the most amazing adventure in their lives.
Its not the usual happy ever after FF usually goes for nor is it as empowering as a happy ending. People that play games for story are looking for little feel-good highs to ride toward the end of the game, FFXII didn't offer any of that, so they're mad about that.
History is a lie - The End. That's FFXII.
As for FFXIII, you guys didn't imagine Kitase would hit the bottom of the barrel with characters eventually? FFX managed to get by because Sakaguchi was still with Square at the time and had influence on the characters. Same thing with FFXI, actually, Sakaguchi had some influence on the initial world we were given.
FFXII was different and those that know Matsuno know he has his own flavor. He doesn't have for flair for happy endings and deus ex machina that Sakaguchi + Kitase had together. Now that we have Kitase left to his own devices, there's no counter-point to his character concepts. He lost the man that made him a good storyteller.
And at this point, it makes Nomura's character and story concepts look brilliant, even though they amount to some of the greatest storytelling cliches out there. Versus XIII is looking to be Romeo and Juliet: The Mafioso JRPG. I guess the difference will be that the loves don't commit suicide and gangsters become heroes.
The only compelling aspect of Nomura's work is he weaves a good mythos even though his thematic inspirations are pretty fucking obvious. KH:BBS was a fall of the samurai/Jedi story, its the way the characters are connected to the larger story that makes it interesting. Well, that and the gameplay didn't blow chunks like the console games did. They finally worked that kink out.

Again, my only real problem with Ashe is that she didn't cave into her darker side. Just once, can we have the hero actually be at least somewhat "bad" instead of more cliche selfless heroism? Otherwise yeah this x100. God those two were just a couple of glorified extras.
Hell Tidus was 10x more interesting than Vaan (though I also think he gets a lot of undeserved hate. Yeah he was kinda annoying but not to the degree that people demonize him)
Does Square-Enix really think we're going to fall for the X-2 trick again? Really?
I'm sorry to say I just might.
IF (*bigsupermegagundam* IF) they really include the original game and fix all the things they cut due to the Xbox version while adding the FES content for XIII-2 at the same/lower price it may well be worth getting.
Re: Nomura confirms first sign of FFXIII-2 hurray!!! ^_^
FFXIII despite its faults, is very much liked in all regions! And the sales say a lot too! And Famitsu and other revewers gave it decent scores. It's a success considering FFXIV has yet to make that much money. FFXIII-2 using content they cut from FFXIII would make the next project easier and more affordable for SE.

I'm not buying FFXIII-2 period. They bombed that chance after they ruined the original. The battle system was terrible IMO, on top of that the original sound track wasn't even done by the original. Nobou Uematsu was the sole producer of FF's music. The only song(s) I liked were The Vanleth Waterscape and Blinded By Light. They should've kept the battle system from twelve and incorporated that with thirteen, it would've been a beautiful game. On top of that Lightning was pretty much a female Cloud. A candy-ass and a crybaby. (Excuse those who are fans of Cloud) I honestly think Squall was a better character than Cloud period.

Cloud is a little bit more complex than the emo-criers would have you think, but it's tough to put it all together from FFVII alone. Unfortunately, he wasn't quite portrayed this way in Dissidia, which ruined that game for me.
Lightning may have looked a lot like Cloud, but she wasn't a female Cloud. She was interested only in rescuing her sister, which had to be done in tandem with her C'ieth mission and with people whose help she didn't really want. It was a lot more simple than Cloud's identity issues with being a controllable puppet, realizing you were living your best friend's life after he passed, and being part Sephiroth.

@BBQ: On account of having only played half of XII (had too much school work on my plate at the time...picking it up again this January) I have to ignore your post to avoid spoilars.

I don't mind virtuous heroes as long as they suffer for it. Ramza was a goody-two-shoes but none of his choices ever came easy and sticking to his ideals made him go through a lot of shit.
Ain't that the truth. Every time I play through FFVII I get severely confused when trying to figure out what exactly Cloud actually is.
Advent Children had a movie of most of the plot cutscenes from FFVII, which helped put it all together. Crisis Core also filled in a few gaps, although the Sephiroth/Angeal/Genisis thing was rather confusing too. They were both experiments, Genisis being the failed first and Angeal being the successful second. I think their experiments were seperate from Sephiroth's.
