  • MS kills Halo Wars

Even though I mostly play SC2 now (and Civ Rev) when I want my strategy fix, I did really enjoy HW and it sucks ass that they're doing this. Really I only stopped playing because of the lack of support (there's still a lot of balance issues that should be addressed) and players, particularly since Reach came out. HW topped out at like 30k people during it's peak, now you're lucky to see even 1000.

Microsoft closing Halo Wars website, folding into Waypoint community | Joystiq

Avid Halo Wars players, whose attention hasn't been swayed by 2010's exhaustive list of strategy blockbusters, were greeted with some unwelcome news this past weekend: The game's stat tracking home, as well as its official forums, will be shut down on December 15. The loyal community is being persuaded to move its conversation over to the Halo Waypoint forums. On the same day as the closure, an update will launch for Halo Wars, forever severing it from the soon-to-be-discontinued website.

The update will also remedy a few Theater mode issues that were keeping players from viewing cutscenes, but, according to 343's content producer, "it won't include many of the fixes that we all wanted it to include." As you can imagine, the responses on said post are well-measured, even-headed and entirely polite. There's just this air of understanding permeating the entire discussion that's ... well, it's really inspiring.

So yeah, no stat tracking = dead game. They've explained over & over that it was a last minute thing they really didn't want to do but have to, but that doesn't change the fact that this basically kills the game since there will be no repercussions for boosting so why even bother playing competitively.

At least I'll get my unique avatar over @ waypoint but woopty-doo, the only good console RTS out there dies Dec 15th. TU5 is pretty weak anyway, no balance changes at all and even if they do fix the Arbiter Arbiter Forge bullshit, it won't matter because all the good players are quitting now.

And nothing of value was lost.

Console RTS is even more laughable than console FPS.

Was this game ever good? I only heard stories about it being super unbalanced. I always wanted it give it a shot, but than my xbox broke and I completely forgot about it.

I wouldn't call it a bad game. People either love it or hate it but I wouldn't call Halo Wars a bad game.

It was made by the Age of Empires people, so it couldn't have been all bad.

MS did kinda run them into the ground on the strategy genre, though.

It was actually pretty well made, and most of the balance issues got fixed by TU4. Decent entry into the Halo series as well, giving some nice background info. The game is very micro-intensive, since bases have 7 slots max that are all placed around the main structure, and money gathers automatically when you build supply pads.

Now I'll admit this is something I always kinda hated about the game, not having any free-build and essentially unlimited money (given enough time) which made wars of attrition nearly impossible, but it was still fun at its core. Ensemble really did an amazing job on this game, and it sucks that it's basically going all to hell in favor of Reach.

                  Re: MS kills Halo Wars

Didn't Age of Mythology have the same type of economy model? I can't really remember since the last time I touched that game was well over 5 years ago, but I remember saying it was dumb because you could never run out of money. Correct me if I am wrong.

I guess that just ported that model to Halo Wars? /shrug.

Wouldn't know, never played that game.

But you collect money in 2 ways in HW - Build supply pads/warehouses and upgrade them for more money/second, and by grabbing supply crates with infantry/scouts/leaders.

This is almost as sad as when we found out that C&C4 turned out to be a warhammer clone.

^ yeah WTF was EA thinking? I was so excited for C&C 4 because I wanted to see the truth about Kane and how it all ends, but... ugh, between the DRM and just how awful the gameplay is (I didn't like the beta one bit) I just can't condone buying it. Maybe if I can find it cheap for like $20 or less, even then...
