You listen to GT reviews? Rots the mind. From your description, they're not even playing Sonic Colors. Perhaps you meant Sonic 4?

In Colors, there is a "ship" boss, as in pirate ship; a "wheel" boss which looks like a psychotic ferris wheel and a spaceship boss. Each gets a second time out and they get reskinned with new obstacles, underlings or attachments. Its different enough.

Super Sonic stuff unlocks after you finish Colors, I think. I've seen no options for that transformation yet, but I've been told its there.

OK, finished up. Well, there's still plenty of S-Ranking and Red Ring collecting to do and there's still this Locked icon in the options, but I'm finished in terms of campaign and story.

"Cheap endgame pitfall deaths" just plain don't exist. You'd have to just not be paying attention or dumb to not be able to time the jumps in the final level. "Laggy? controls? More like poor timing on the parts of reviewers.

There is one thing where sometimes the game throws up this "S" shaped arrow and that's where Sonic can drift to the side of path and into spikes. It gets a little too loose, but that's rather rare in the game. The "Z" arrow icon just implies a particular section let's you switch "lanes." Sonic's running is essentially autopiloted ere, except you can push him to move forward faster or if the camera pans behind him, use your boost meter to push him further away.

I do have to say while ring spills are much less common early-to-midgame (because the robots are kinda slow to attack) and even though that's generous, its high time Sonic gets a life meter or something. I mean, its awesome that I can rack up like 400+ rings on a level, but one hit and I can kiss what total toward my end rank goodbye. Can't it be like a portion of the rings or 2-3 hits and rings be the last line of defense? Its just time to lose the "get hit, lose everything" mechanic.

Aside from that, very enjoyable experience. I'm no Sonic diehard, but its the first time in a loooooooong time I've really enjoyed a Sonic game. I remember the days I'd go over to a friends and we'd do Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles all afternoon and this game sort of satisfied in that way. Back then it was kinda like seeing "how the other side lives" meaning, the "Sega" side as I was a kid and it just wasn't common for a household to have more than one particular console. I wasn't allowed to have a Genesis since I had an SNES (silly parental rules).

I really hope Sonic Team is using this game as a point of reference for the future of the series. Hell, bring Wisp powers back, they're more useful than Chaos Emeralds are.

Or lend Sonic to Shigeru Miyamoto's people just for a bit. That would work for me.
