  • Sonic Colors impressions (Wii)

Well, before the Donkey Kong returns on Sunday, I thought I'd give Sonic Colors a shot since I had finished off Kirby. I'm not a Sonic diehard, I've always skewed to Mario and Donkey Kong when it comes to platformers and after having what I liked about Sonic destroyed by Sonic Adventure and all the subsequent 3D games, I was a little skeptical about Sonic Colors. Then I saw some trailers and got some hope. This is usually the start of the Sonic Cycle for most people

I'm part way into the fourth world, which is saying a lot because I pretty much gave up on Sonic 4 once I tried out Lost Labyrinth and Mad Gears, which were utter shit. For me Sonic isn't so much about speed as it is momentum. Once that momentum is halted, Sonic stops being Sonic.

In Sonic Colors, there always seems to be momentum in some fashion. While its not always speeding left to right you will be running, bounding off spring boards, sliding, rail-grinding, zapping around, rocketing upward, skydiving downward, drilling your way underground and more. And this is mostly through the power of Wisps, various little colored aliens that give Sonic different powers.

Basically, imagine the first few levels of any other 3D sonic before they crap it up with some gimmick or "adventure" element. That's what's going on here, except its all just Sonic, only Sonic and nothing but Sonic through all the levels. Tails is there for moral support, that's pretty much it.

The story is strictly kid's stuff but unlike in the past, the acting is actually bearable. Eggman/Robotnik builts a space theme park as if to atone for his past misdeeds, but naturally he's doing something evil. There's some laughs to be had here, mostly with the evil henchmen and side characters, but whenever Sonic and Tails do the jokes they seem to fall flat. There is a Japanese language option, too, if you must have that sort of thing.

So far I've only had one level that gave me trouble and its a level where you have this bouncing platform that scrolls along with you on a pre-determined path all through the level. And naturally, one screw-up and you fall to your death, so they made sure to put a lot of tempting rings, 1-ups and red rings all over that level to kill you. Collect all red rings on each level and you unlock new levels in Eggman's "Sonic Simulator."

The simulator levels attempt to "go retro" but they're painfully boring even by Genesis Sonic standards. The Co-up element, which was supposed to make this mode appealing, works against Sonic Simulator. Put it this way, you know how Super Mario Bros Wii was fun because there was co-up followed up by backstabbing (kinda in the same way people play Uno), well this is just having two characters and once constantly holding the other back. There's no fun in it - 0ts just too hard to do Sonic-style platforming with two people on the screen at the same time.

The main levels, however, have been a real treat both visually and in that much-needed gameplay momentum. You'll never find yourself coming to a complete grinding halt, though you may find yourself plummeting to your doom, but every Sonic has that.

And as you meet new Wisp and complete the initial level you meet them, they'll migrate to other levels they were not previously available in. Considering each level is multi-tiered even without them, this gives you reason to go back and better your rank, get all the red rings and see just how much was packed into each level.

The Mario Galaxy-esque 2D-to-3D shift also keeps things nice and varied, you'll find many levels where the camera pulls back to give a nice wide 2D perspective and I haven't found one moment where that shift leads to a cheap death. In fact for the most part, the game has been fair in what punishments it doles out, though I hear pitfalls become of bit more prevalent in the endgame.

I will admit some disappointment in the 30 FPS, but there is so much going on visually (its like one big epilepsy factory in some levels) that something had to give. Its actually impressive the game doesn't stutter from the 30 FPS considering all that's going on.

One piece of advice I will give is make sure you have the Classic Controller Pro or a Gamecube controller on hand, as the Wiimote just isn't helping the game.

Overall, I've found Sonic Colors to deliver and then some where Sonic 4 has disappointed. Kinda funny considering its usually the 3D ones that are bad. Its the first step in the right direction for 3D Sonic and with next year being the 20th Anniversary, here's hoping the lessons learned here carry over into the multiplatform title they already have planned.

I was almost scared to click on this thread. I'll have to give this game a shot. I was hoping it would be good, but I was convinced Sega would kick me in the balls again. As for the coop, are you saying both characters are bound to the same screen? That sounds retarded, especially considering Sega had VS modes with split-screen in Sonic 2 and 3.

What was it about Sonic Adventure that you hated so much? The only part of that game that I REALLY hated was playing as Big the Cat. That was just awful.

Big the Cat and pretty much any non-Sonic level, plus the plodding, boring "adventure" elements that don't fit Sonic at all. And the fact that after the initial levels of Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, most of the levels after the first few suck. Everything between those two and Sonic Colors that have been 3D I have skipped and not played on principle alone.

I hear they have some optional missions based around other Sonic characters in the DS version (and yes, Big the Cat is there). Thankfully optional. Dunno when I'm getting that, but there doesn't seem to be any connectivity or unlocked content for having both.

And yeah, the co-op is single screen, which is rather dumb.

I think they tried it because, to be honest, there is a lot of Mario Galaxy/NSMB Wii influence there. Its just hard to miss. There are things they took from those Mario games that work fine in the context of Sonic (wall jumps, drill power, 2D/3D shift), but the single-screen co-op is not one of them.

I don't know if I can say Sonic Colors is the best platformer this year, but its come the closest to feeling as exhilarating and empowering as a Sonic game should be and that's been a long time since I felt that. Kirby was just awesome in that regard, even if it was somewhat of an easier game. In many respects, each time Sonic finds that new power up much like a Mario power-up or Kirby transformation, you're excited to have it and look for opportunities to use it. Games like Mario Galaxy 2, DKCR and the sheer ambition behind Epic Mickey may be tough to top.

Amy's segments weren't that great either to be honest, but otherwise yeah Sonic Adventure was an amazing game. I still prefer it over SA2.

Plot-wise, yeah. She's pretty obnoxious. But gameplay wise she was all right. I enjoyed having super jumps.

            Wait

Another new Sonic game? Didn't they just release Sonic 4?

Whatever, this one actually looks pretty good and I will look into it shortly.

Yeah, three Sonic games this year.

Sonic Team on Colors Wii and Sonic 4, Dimps on Colors DS.

And then this multi-platform Anniversary title slated for next year. Supposedly its going to be a "Best of" sort of game, drawing upon all installments of the series for levels, which probably means they'll be using the 2D/3D shifting even more.

Of course, for me, a best of Sonic would mostly consist of the recurring Casino levels.

EDIT: Tried out the Sonic Colors DS demo via DS Download on the Nintendo Channel. Its only one level. Its themed after the first Tropical Zone in Colors, but feels akin to Green Hill in Sonic 4 with some rail-grinds thrown in. Like Sonic 4, this one also sports 3D models rather than sprites, but it moves fast and looks pretty crisp.

Sonic doesn't get off to a slow start like in Sonic 4, which is good so you can get started quickly. The demo follows a similar design philosophy, but Sonic encounters totally different Wisps in this version and as such, gets different powers from them. Sonic is also sporting his new Wall Jump in Colors DS, too, though there was only one instance I used it, I'm sure that will come up a bit more.

Its not much to go on, but its already more fun than Sonic 4.

That was the big thing about Sonic 4 for me. It just stops being fun and empowering pretty fast. There's nothing even fun or clever outside of the Casino levels and even the boss fight there sucks.

EDIT 2: Just skimmed over the Metacritic averages, Both Colors games fared better with critics, leading to an average of 80 and a little bit higher with users. Sonic 4 has a huge critic/user disparity in score, the critic average being high 70s and users dragging it down into the 50s, PS3 players are pretty forgiving toward it, but Wii users seem to mostly hate it and 360 users are outright hostile toward it.

Couldn't find the average for iPhone, but then, iPhone gamers are happy with anything so its really hard to trust them.

I didn't like running from that stupid invincible robot to be honest. I liked Sonic's levels best (durr) followed by either tails or E-102 I think his name was? The little bird that got turned into a robot?

Knuckles was ok, I just didn't care for the stupid music they used in his levels... and it only got worse in 2.

I busted out laughing, because it's all so true.

                    Re: Sonic Colors impressions (Wii)

OK, what is the fucking trick to Lost Labyrinth's "World of Darkness" level in Sonic 4? Seriously, if I want a fucking torch puzzle, I'll go play Zelda, because at least Link's torch puzzles make some sense (ok, torches opening passageways never makes sense, but at least its intuitive).

The horizontal platform I need always retracts before the vertical one I want to retract first, even though I try to time it so the horizontal one retracts last. This thing is seriously BS. Don't even get me started on the blow-ass Mad Gears levels but I beat those at least.

Other thing that really sticks out about Sonic 4 to me is how Genesis this Sonic is.

Yeah, he's got that homing attack but no sliding, no rail grinding, no wall-jumps - these are all things he's learned from the Dreamcast days to Sonic Colors. When New Super Mario Bros came out, Mario didn't forget his backflip, triple jump, butt stomp or wall jumps. Those are things he learned in Mario 64, for crying out loud - why wouldn't he have them? He wouldn't be Mario to the current generation of gamers if he didn't have these things.

Same reason Mega Man can't slide or use the Mega Buster now?

I'm not played Mega Man 9 or 10 yet, so I couldn't say if that was a good thing or not. To be fair, though, the Megabuster did make many games a lot easier than the original two.

Eh not really. When was the last time you played 1 or 2?

In MM1 the buster did like 3+ bars of of damage, and in both 1 & 2 you could pretty much spam it on bosses. It wasn't until 3 that they gave them the temporary invulnerability that MM has.

I just got started on the seventh and final set of zones, but overall I've experienced a good variety with the levels and on the whole most have been enjoyable. The Asteroid Rollercoaster 2D sections riff on Mario Galaxy's gravity elements a little bit, but the actual rollercoaster bits were neat, if short lived.

The actual variety with bosses, eh, there's really only a few bosses with their elements adapted to each of the original six worlds. Bosses have never been a strength for this series anyway, but the spaceships you face in the more cosmic areas are a bt of fun and shift from 3D to 2D and back.

Didn't they basically copy & paste a bunch of bosses from Sonic 1 and 2? I thought I saw in GT's review that for the hidden zone they even went and copied Sonic 2's final boss with Eggman inside the big walker robot with the 2 spiked fists (I always hated that boss because you had no rings...)

Still, it's nothing compared to the epic mind screw I experienced years and years ago when I was doing the final boss in Sonic 3 on the Death Egg and the SOB managed to grab me while I was Super Sonic AND KILL ME with his stupid slam attack once he grabs you. I mean, WTF?! Normally that attack just slams you into the platform and your rings go flying, but outright death? AS SUPER FREAKING SONIC?! Oh if only Youtube had existed back then...
