    Poker Night: Meet The Pigeon

Ãœber-confession here: I'm not a huge fan of any of the series represented in this crossover, mostly out of a lack of participation in any of them (this includes the game Poker itself). But still, the ability to use a gun called "The Lugermorph" is just too tempting to pass up.

Should I pick this up and finally jump on to the TF2 bandwagon in the meantime? Are there any deals I should be looking out for if the answer to the previous question was "yes"?

TF2 is a lot of fun and you can get it from Steam for about 20 US dollars though I would highly recommend getting a headset since this is a game where you really do need voice communication to succeed. You team NEEDS to know the locations of stuff like sentries, snipers and spies (Your Heavies, Medics and Pyros will love you for this) or when the Medic's ubercharge is full and if the Medic's using the Medigun or Kritzkreig (Uber is good for Heavies, Soldiers, Pyros and Demomen, Kritz really depends on the situation since everyone can make use of it and has a valid argument to be Kritz'd). Valve's VoIP software is average but it gets the job done.

If you want to get into the game, grab it off Steam, grab a headset and pick Medic. Medics are always useful for any team and it lets you follow and watch the other players so you can see how to and not to play the other classes.

Just picked it up last night, did some offline practice to get a feel for the controls and whatnot . . .

Anyway, I already have a "headset," in the sense that I have headphones in place of speakers as well as a microphone, but will I need any third-party applications for communicating with my team?

No, Steam has it's own VoIP and Team Fortress already has a better version of it. The hotkey is "v" by default.

If you're in a clan then Vent or TeamSpeak is usually preferential since the VoIP software is better but you won't need it if you're just playing casually.

TF2's community is pretty friendly and helpful towards new players like with FFXI so if you've never played it before then make sure you let your team know that you're new. Most people will give you some advice or point out classes that are not suited for new players: Spy, Pyro, Sniper in that order usually because they require you to know maps like the back of your hand (Spy and Pyro especially and you need to master hit and run tactics with both).

For a new player I would recommend Medic (for the reasons I said in my last post) really. Heavies aren't too bad for new players as well since they are easy to pick up.
