I haven't actually played FFV. Nor do I have any plans to, because I'm not masochistic enough to go through the ATB system again after enduring it through FFIV (and even if I were I hear better things about FFVI anyway).

Though, I'll admit I was rather late to the series as a whole. The first FF game I ever actually owned (and thus have any coherent knowledge of playing) was Tactics Advance, followed by X. Of the Final Fantasies I've played, I'd likely rank them

Opinions herein

1. FFXI (haters may hate, but how much more of a definitive FF experience can you get than actually being a Final Fantasy character, with constantly up-to-date canon to boot?)
2. FFIII (though with possible bias carryover from XI - this was the game it was based off of, after all)
3. FFX (never got to complete it, though . . .)
4. FFI (I once actually used Eight Bit Theater as a guide to tell me where to go next for this one . . .)
5. FFIV (ATB . . .)
6. FFII (I think everyone agrees that this is the black sheep of the series, and I'd rank it much lower if possible - never completed due to sheer frustration)

For the non-numbered entries I have played, I'd put TA between III and X, and RW between I and IV.

As for the thread title concerning what ranks among the "best RPGs," just simply among the games I've played Chrono Trigger, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, Generation II Pokémon, Tales of Symphonia, and even FFXI all come to mind before any of the other FF games (that I have played) (and I never got to complete Disgaea . . . maybe I'll get around to doing that on this cruddy DS version I got one of these days . . . maybe . . . ).

YM: No FFT on your list? Please do yourself a favor and play it if you haven't. I have it at the top of the FF list and it's in my top 3 games of all time (the other 2 being Super Metroid and Capcom vs. SNK 2).

Yes FFT was the shit, but I still hold FFIX as one of my favorites mechanic wise, story wise I have to go with 8

I was only talking about main series FF games, hence no mention of the spin offs like FFT, Dissidia, Crisis Core, FFX-2, Crystal Chronicles, Four Heroes etc.

If we go like that FFT would definitely be high up on both of my lists with X-2 actually on there because of the battle system and job system. I wouldn't put it on the favourite list though due to how much they derailed Rikku's character. She went from a sweet and lovable girl to a dumb blonde who only seems to be there for the fanservice and comic relief. Shame really because she's one of my favourite Final Fantasy characters.

The voice acting was very good, Dark Knight is pretty sweet, loved Balthier's Cameo, Add-hoc PvP (why the hell don't they support infrastructure mode more I"ll never understand) and the best, most important aspect - the localized translations.

No more broken English like there was in a number of spots in the original.

Eh it's a very big grey area.

There's 3 different versions of Ivalice, the FFT, FFTA and FF12 worlds. They're all technically the same world with the same races, but the histories and geography differ wildly.
