Jacksonville mom who shook baby for interrupting computer game pleads to murder | jacksonville.com

"A Jacksonville mother charged with shaking her baby to death has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Alexandra V. Tobias, 22, was arrested after the January death of 3-month-old Dylan Lee Edmondson. She told investigators she became angry because the baby was crying while she was playing a computer game called Farmville on the Facebook social-networking website.

Tobias entered her plea Wednesday before Circuit Judge Adrian G. Soud. A second-degree murder charge is punishable by up to life in prison.

Prosecutor Richard Mantei said Tobias' sentence could be less because of state guidelines that call for 25 to 50 years. Soud offered no promises on what he'll order during a sentencing hearing scheduled for December.

Outside the courtroom, Mantei said Tobias' plea will help avoid the family reliving the tragedy during a jury trial.

Tobias told investigators that she shook the baby, smoked a cigarette to compose herself and then shook him again. She said the baby may have hit his head during the shaking.

Wait, she shook the baby, maybe not with any sort of premeditation but she did it nonetheless. The it says she calmed down then took the decision to go back to the baby and shake him AGAIN... Someone who would actually willingly, in a calm state, pick up a baby that has already been shaken violently and deliberately do so again shouldn't be let out of prison.

Second, what the hell is someone doing smoking when they have a three month old child?

Third, who the fuck puts video games (well Facebook in this case) before their crying three month old child?

I played farmville and to be honest it only made me want to shake the people that made the game.
It's things like these that make me think the world we live in is such a cruel place.
The woman had such disregard for the wellbeing of her child, Sadly she probably can crap out another with the click of her fingers.
It enrages me because I know I'll never become a parent yet the people who are so undeserving can multiply close to the rate of bacteria.
      it sickens me.

                    @ Shepard:

The retarded thing is, it's actually more expensive to execute someone than to issue a life sentence. Look it up >_>

As horrible as this all is, it's second degree and I'd be amazed if this was in any way intentional (to me, Death penalty needs to be reserved for the truly evil/psychotic who can't be rehabilitated). This is just a tragic case of negligence and addiction/ignorance, and I don't think she should be executed over it. She's definitely gotta pay big time though, poor thing was probably just hungry and was stupidly killed by the very provider it was crying to

This is why I always say when asked about kids & such that you should really need a license or some other certification to have children! Hell you get issued a marriage license don't you? Or something like that. Why is it that the most incompetent of people can have and raise their own children, while in many cases perfectly capable people can't adopt in some places?

It takes one bullet to kill somebody.

Appeals and the cost of maintaining someone on death row, etc.

Sure if we do things the old fashioned way we can bring the cost down to a length of rope or a large rock to the skull, but that's not how things are done anymore.

Re: So much for violent games making people violent...

I read about this yesterday, and I was pretty disgusted. How the hell can anyone, even in anger, bring themselves to shake and harm a baby? I don't get it. People are stupid, well, at least a good portion of them.

There was a break-in at a farm somewhere in western Canada, and the farmer heard someone break in, and noticed a car parked outside. He grabbed a hatchet and checked the house, nobody was there. So he went outside and found the guy who broke in taking his stuff, who then noticed him and pulled a knife. So the farmer defends himself and beats the crap out of him.

The farmer is being charged with assault.
The guy who broke in is just getting charged Breaking and Entering.

Retarded. I'm losing what little faith I had in society. o-e

Death Row? Is that what we'll put people in when we use that single bullet for multiple criminals?

No, that's the thing that criminals are put in for absorbent amounts of time before they are killed. Only a few years, if not more.

I honestly don't understand how hard it is to plop someone down on a table, inject them with whatever, then cremate them. However, if they want to keep the convictee alive for a year to make sure the case is 100% solved and you don't have the wrong person, sure, okay. But, if there's any doubt the person didn't do it, then they shouldn't be put on death row, imo. Then again... We have interrogators who know how to confuse the person and get statements from them that they did the crime, when they really did not. We won't even go there, though.
