Capcom and Level 5 are teaming up to bring a Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton crossover game: Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney. No real details but looks like it is for the 3DS.

Dangit Capcom. Must everything be "vs. another company's IP" with you?!?

    . . .

That said, though, it seems interesting, though I never got in to the Professor Layton series . . .

Re: It would be puzzling if there was an objection to this

You have to admit this makes a bit more sense than Phoenix appearing in MVC3 and Professor Layton guesting in a Smash Bros game. They're point-and-click adventure characters, after all, and also the most popular of the genre on the DS platform.

I like crossovers mostly just to see how they'll play characters off one another. Kingdom Hearts wasn't as thematically strong starting out as it is now, and yet some people would just rather it banked on Disney nostalgia rather than doing what a crossover should do and play the right characters off each other based on the scenario.

Cloud in Hercules' world never made a lick of sense, for example. He was just kinda thrown in there, but I can't say that about Auron or Zack Fair. Hell, Zack was a perfect fit because he was somewhat similar to Hercules. And what is Hercules but the cheeky "I want to be a hero" RPG archtype that Zack Fair had the rare opportunity of wearing well?

Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton would be less reflective and more complimentary, much like a Batman and Spiderman team-up. Or the Kirk and Spock/Mulder and Scully kind of pairing.

Layton tends to tackle things logically while Phoenix is prone to leaps of faith. This would be both how they work against each other starting out and how they'd end up saving the day. Conversely, Layton initially is dumb enough to trust anyone he meets while Phoenix would look for inconsistencies and lies in what people say.

Its confirmed for 3DS, as if there wasn't enough reasons to want one as it is.

Can the 3DS at least come out before we start complaining what platform its on?

I think there's been like 6 Ace Attorney games on DS now, that's like one per year the system has been out. The second Miles Edgeworth game is coming. I think there have been four Layton games for DS which means DS still has one more coming at least. DS gamers have not been left behind on Layton and Ace Attorney.

I think a crossover game on 3DS is actually a brilliant way to generate some attention for both series. God knows Ace Attorney is in need of some new fans given many so-called fans seem to be content to R4 it instead of buy it. Actually I think that's a big part of the reason, as 3DS is going to see a rather unique means of firmware updates.

Also Ace Attorney meets Professor Layton and Time Travelers are not the only 3DS projects currently slated, take look:

                    http://ds.ign.com/articles/112/1128846p1.html

                    Fantasy Life
You might recall hearing about this tie-up between Level-5 and developer Brownie-Brown from last year's Level-5 Vision. The game went dark following a surprisingly detailed announcement, but it resurfaced at Level-5 Vision 2010 as a 3DS game.

The change to 3DS has seen the expected visual updates. The game switches over from sprite-based visuals to 3D polygonal visuals. You can see the difference for yourself in our media gallery.

The basics appear to remain unchanged. You'll still create your very own avatar and live out a variety of lives. The game will have heavy networking support, including Street Pass (that's the 3DS version of Tag Mode).

As announced last year, Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu has a central role in the game, crafting 21 ending theme songs. Today, Level-5 announced that Final Fantasy illustrator Yoshitaka Amano will be handling the game's image illustration.

Fantasy Life is planned for Japanese 3DS release in 2011.

                    Kyabajoppi
Unlike Fantasy Life and Time Travelers, this 3DS title came out of nowhere. Although it's not an original title.

Kyabajoppi is a comical hostess simulation game for Level-5's ROID mobile service. Players raise a hostess while interacting with clients, including some guest manga characters. The game proved to be a major hit in mobile form.

The 3DS version adds a new dimension to the game. And we mean that in two ways. In addition to the switch to 3D, the game is now an RPG, with what Level-5 says will be an epic storyline.

Guest characters confirmed for appearance include Lupin III and Joe from Ashita no Joe. Level-5 said it would be powering up this particular area of the game.

A release is due for 2011. This sounds like the kind of game that would never make it out of Japan, but with the 3DS being such a new system, perhaps someone will jump (maybe even Level-5 itself as it expands to international markets soon).

In case you're wondering what in the world a hostess simulator looks like, view our newly uploaded image gallery.

Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
This was announced way back at E3 and was even playable at the Nintendo Conference press event in Japan late last month. Among the revelations from Level-5 Vision 2010, it seems the game will take place in two time lines, portraying young and old Layton characters. In the present time, the game takes place one year after the events of the last Layton game which depicted the first meeting of Layton and Luke.
So that's three straight up level 5 games and two collaborations, one with Capcom and the other with Nintendo's Brownie Brown studio.

This reminds me of my views on the PSP, except eventually the price dropped and there were enough games out for me to validate a purchase.

It's a goddamn shame that the 3DS is never going to get more games or decrease in price though.

For PSP, that took a while, though. for me like four years. 3DS seems to have everything going for it out the gate. Even with people making the (typical) complaint that there's not enough original games, there already appears to be some momentum in that direction.

Its no small deal when the likes of Level 5, SE, Capcom and Konami are already pulling out all the stops for a system that's not even on the market yet. Atlus already has four committed projects, more than enough to get me on board.

I'm just not seeing any downside to it aside from the batter life, but that's why its coming bundled with the charging bay and such.

Here's a non-shakey cam version of the trailer:
