Two new Japanese Phantasy Star trademarks - Destructoid.com

There's Japanese videogame trademarks for both Phantasy Star: Eternal Planets and Phantasy Star: Eternal Hunters by Sega. We're with them in thinking that the name sounds like two different versions of the same game. Phantasy Star: Heartgold anyone?

Again, we know nothing of what to expect from these titles, or even when to expect them. Still, I'm betting these are DS games.
Here's hoping whatever they are they're more single player focused. Phantasy Star is back where it needs to be in terms of the online RPG - Sega just need to avoid making the same missteps they did again - but there's not been a fully offline experience in the series a very, very long time.

Sega can't be relied on for great stories like the classics these days (Sega completely RUINED Shining Force on consoles!)
unless they are creative enough to let go of all the PSO/U atmosphere and go back to the Algo System atmosphere.

Their only good potential sits within the online rpg realm. It's a shame they are too cowardly to work hard enough to make the first true Phantasy Star mmorpg.

They are even too lazy, negative and incompetent to translate and release the Phantasy Star 1 and 2 Sega AGES remakes in North America, mew!

I don't trust anything new from Sega. And chances are, any future PS games will only be released on PSP, 3DS or Wii, rendering them useless.

So long as atmopshere and music are still maintained, I can actually live with whatever story they roll out so long as the gameplay is good. As I said, they have great characters even if the stories aren't that great. A better story would be nice, but its not requisite.

Its not even confirmed what PSO2 is. I would actually hope that it did not become an MMORPG. Plus since we live in a time where content is far easier to distribute online, they should have no problem creating DLC to cover costs rather than force monthly fees.

Well, that's a shame because Sega's RPGs have been some of the best things about Sega these days. I do resent them not localizing 7th Dragon, but they did at least bring over Infinite Space.

They've never been able to justify that fee, save for that when those fees initially existed, people were still dumb enough to believe a few kilobytes download brought a wealth of content to the game.

Hell, even on Xbox and PS2, people were thought they were getting DLC when they were just unlocking shit that was already on the disc. So PSU was able to get away with it for a while.

That doesn't work anymore and, moreover, Sega has created a new standard within the community now that they've released two handheld Phantasy Star games with online play and no monthly fees. Couple this with the fact people just aren't that dumb about online gaming anymore. If there is not content to back the game, people are not going to pay for a game that never adds it.

And people are wise to the on-the-disc DLC shenanigans, largely due to Bandai-Namco befoming infamous on Xbox Live for having the audacity of charging money for it on games like Tales of Vesperia and Magna Carta 2. I kid you not, they want you to pay to unlock the theater mode in Vesperia.

With MMOs taking on so many payment models these days, I'd only assume that PSO might go for something that Guild Wars 2 might end up doing. GW2 is going to be free-to-play, but I just have this feeling there are going to be tons of expansions coming for it in lieu of a monthly fee.

And for a peer-to-peer RPG like PSO is (and the first GW was), that's something I'm open to, so long as the content becomes more varied and the price is right.

Making PSO into an MMORPG ruins the one thing I like about its genre - freedom.

MMOs have persistence, but they lack true freedom largely because of their persistent online worlds. You ultimately strive to join up with large groups of people for big endgame events. Those people lay down rules for the sake of efficiency, which limits how you wish to play your role.

And to be fair, they're right to have this attitude, efficiency is important because you want to get as much as you can done in the amount of time you have. But while being a team player is nice and all and potentially rewarding, it still fucking blows that so much freedom is lost.

A game like Phantasy Star, Diablo or Monster Hunter don't require massive groups of people to get things done. They're not full of people telling you how to play your job. You're seldom going to need more than four people to get anything done. There's no commitment and, better still, if you don't feel like going online that day, you can still play in an offline mode.

You have absolute freedom and nothing tying you down. Only the solo end of MMORPGs can lay claim to that quality, but you're still required to be online for solo play.

Well, I tried out an old Phantasy Star game today on Wii VC since I decided to give Sonic 4 a fair shake.

Not even the Sega Ages remake could save that. It just hasn't aged that well. Maybe the DS games will bring the single player side into the modern day.

Phantasy Star 3/4 where good and still age decently well.....for old sega games anyway ;p but yeah PS1 and PS2 did not

I liked all the online PSO/PSU games so far, and I will say that I really like PSP2's new features....but there is still one thing that will always keep me away from the likes of PSU (on console) and that was the lack of support...........

Phantasy Star and Monster Hunter two games I love to hell and back, just dont get the love and care in the states that they get in Japan.

Phantasy Star Portable 2 is something I'll probably keep playing for some time to come. Seems its even doing quite well despite the mixed reviews. At least, its doing well on the PSN version (which is probably the version I should have gotten anyway since I play it so damn much).
